This game is so addicting. Dumped almost 30 hours in so far on Draconian mode. The difficulty is excellent. I don't think I'd like the game nearly as much on regular difficulty.

Which settings did you turn on, all of them?

I ask because this is my first DQ game. I don't have any draconian settings turned on, and the game is relatively easy... but I am kind of enjoying how casually I can play through the game. I've been tempted to give myself more of a challenge, but wasn't sure which settings to use. Thanks

when does act 1 end?
about 5 hours in and just got to Octogonia.

I just finished Act 2 and had about 25 hours even on both Acts.

That being said, 5 hours to Octogonia is blistering fast. I'm not even sure how you could do that unless you were skipping dialogue and only doing ultra fast battles (and skipping most non-boss fights too).

I binge played this for 70 hours the first 12 days it was out and completely burnt myself out at the end of Act II! Need a break before I go into the end game!

I do kind of meander I guess... I've got a little two year old and sometimes I pick it up and just fight monsters for 15 or 20 minutes cause I don't wanna get any big "story stuff" started and have to put it down. And I did probably spend like 5 hours on Sunday idly cranking away at the casino in Puerto Valor while watching football.

Finally have made it to the point where I was in the PS4 English release and quit. Lonalulu chapter was a lot more tolerable w/o the English voices. I think at this point in the JP version I just kinda floundered around for a bit, going to try and stick to the script this time. Didn't realize that if you talk to the big fish a second time they literally tell you exactly where to go, I probably missed that before :P
Jesus how are you going that fast? I wasn't even at Hotto 5 hours in.

To answer your question you're maybe 40% through Act 1.
There are a lot of opportunities to "waste" time in the early game unnecessarily. Especially on the default difficulty setting.

Only the more difficult monsters one! That's all I am using. It's a great challenge. You really need strategies for the bosses (buffs, debuffs, choosing the right time to use pep powers, etc etc) along with some enemy variations hitting super hard so you go into regular battles with strategies such as "I need to take out X enemy first". It's how turn-based JRPGs should be imo.

So I just got into doing some casino stuff...I'm not sure if I fully understand how the Slime Quest slots work? Like I can't tell if it is skill based for timing, or still rigged like real life slots are. But then when I get into the boss stages of it, it most definitely feels rigged because I can slam the stop buttons at any point and get like one of four predetermined slot layouts.

Slime Quest is really weird, yeah. I'd just stick to normal slots if you want to win tokens, they're more or less rigged in your favor.

wondering if someone can give me an idea of how far I am into Act 2:

I now have the hammer and ore and I'm off to beat some monster near mt. huji so I can forge a new sword of light

Whatever you do, I'd strongly advise against Stronger Monsters AND 'Game Over if Hero dies'. It's super frustrating when some enemy get's a random lethal critical hit on the Luminary. Because that means a cold hard Game Over, reload last save. Churches as restart points are simply deactivated in that mode. Had to replay several lengthy segments because of it. It is tempting immersion-wise because it makes sense from a storytelling perspective, but it leads to many situations of unnecessary frustration.

Edited because I accidently hit 'Post' button on the phone -.-'

Where's a good place to grind levels in the earlier part of Act 3? My party is all between level 55 and 57. I'm currently in the disciple's trial - the cruel crypt - upper level. The monsters there are a pain to kill, and they don't give enough exp. I'm getting like 2500 exp on average. Should I just push through or are there some king metals somewhere?

I dunno about where specifically to find metal slimes, but there is a very easy method to grind for levels basically anywhere in the world using pep powers:

Hero, Erik and Jade have a Pep Power called Hallelujah which increases XP gained in a battle by 2-3x, and Hero Jade and Sylvando have a pep power called Electro Light which changes out the current enemies you're fighting for 3 metal slime enemies (the specific ones determined by your average level). So if you go into a fairly easy battle somewhere and keep defending until Erik and Jade are pepped (with Hero having the Pep Up ability) you can use Hallelujah, then do it again until Jade and Sylvando are pepped (also Rab), use Electro Light, then use Rab's Dirge of Dundrasil to put the metal enemies to sleep, then use Erik's critical claim and other critical abilities (e.g. Jade/Serena's Lightning Thrust).

Do this whole process a few times and you'll be level 99 before you know it. If you have pep pops or pep pips and don't mind using them that also dramatically cuts down on the amount of time this process takes.

Just finished Act 2, 64 hours in. The last boss was kind of a breeze, with all of my characters in the early 50s.

Seeing how I'm a bit pressed of time, with Luigi's Mansion coming out soon, I have some questions about how to most efficiently go through Act 3:

1. Where's the best place to grind? Should I do that right at the beginning of Act 3, should I advance the story a bit until after the *big thing* before grinding? Basically, how do I get to level ~80 or further the fastest?

2. If I were to advance the story up to the last step before the very last boss, would I still at that point be able to backtrack my way to anywhere and do anything I might have missed, or is there any point/points of no return regarding story content I should be aware of? I'm thinking of doing just that so the last boss is always an option if I tire of doing side stuff and can just decide to finish the game.

I'm mostly interested in doing story content and named quests, maybe the tockle stuff too. Any tips to make my experience easier are greatly appreciated :P

And despite my rush to finish, man, this game was/is really something special. My first DQ game (technically I played VIII for a few hours, but didn't stick with it) and what an introduction to the franchise. Might be my GOTY so far.

I'm in the same sort of spot as you! I wanna know what the best path forward is for experiencing the rest of the story with minimal grinding. If anyone has any tips related to getting through Act 3 I'd also really appreciate it!

Your level should be okay, although there are metal slimes in that dungeon if you feel the need to level up.

If you haven't, you should respec Sylvando to learn Hustle Dance immediately. It's a huge life saver. You can also Dazzle the boss to hamstring its offense (this works on most bosses). It's susceptible to sleep as well, though not reliably, and guests have a nasty habit of immediately breaking it.

Late? act 2 spoilers

i am about to fly to that floating island with the sword of light freshly forged. Feels like this is the end of act 2? I am been spoiled a little bit on what act 3 entails and I'm wondering if I will be able to finish my quests later or if there is a cut off here?

Taking this out of the spoiler tag since out of context it's fine.

There's no point where any quests or items are permanently missable in this game. The only exception is like...some mini-medals maybe which can be grinded for later regardless.

Perfect, thanks. I'm eager to move on with the story right now so that's great to hear.

Lol I didnt know this was possible at low level, but it makes sense it can. That made the fight go smoothly, thanks for the advice!

I'm just starting Act III, and I'm going to respec everyone for fun again and some variety. I'm going to try claws and some fisticuffs instead of spears for Jade. Move away from daggers for Eric, because he's just too annoying to set up currently, move TOWARD daggers for Sylvando, and move the Hero back towards Greatswords and Magic. I'm also moving Serena to spears so I can reuse them. Eight may get respec'ed into swords and shield, but he may just move to Greatswords as well - there are a LOT of good Greatswords in my inventory

I'm only L51 to try and keep the challenge, but I gained an additional two levels alone in the final dungeon because of a metal king slime - play clock at 67 hours because of casino

Act 3 ending spoilers
I was mostly spoiled on a lot of aspects of the ending, but nobody spoiled that the tree was a dragon and that the dragon is maybe the Dragonlord, so that was neat to learn

What's funny is that the opening CG cutscene spoiled that for me. Also the various talk of the Yggdragon.

Dude...

Fighting Jade and then Booga is absolutely brutal. I had no problem at all with the game up until this point but I get to Booga and he is wrecking my shit.

Looks like the 3DS tried to maintain the original styles of the games

I actually kind of prefer maintaining the original styles. The 3D games being in 2D is a novelty, but it makes the environments of Tickington feel more "samey" than had they went with each game's style and original music.

Ahh sometimes I wish we got a flying mount instead of that horse... flying on top of the dragon feels good. Its sad only for certain places.
