After saying I wasn't going to bother with the post game I couldn't help it and just got up to

Carnelian sending you to investigate Erdwins lantern

No idea how much longer there is but another 5 hours and it will pass Dark Souls 1 and FFXII as the longest I've ever spent on a single playthrough of a game

It will have at least more than 5 hours left. I passed that part and maybe because i like perfectioning equipment with forge but i'm at 140+ hours. This game actually surpasses Persona 5 as the longest first playthrough (my first Persona 5 playthrough was at 100 hours).

It also manages to stay interesting until the end, not a single dull moment unlike Persona 5, plenty of things to do and post game is actually a lot more similar to snes and ps1 FF games when you can stumble upon lots of new side quests before going to beat the final boss. Plenty of optional bosses, too. Difficulty is also increased a lot in post game (i'm playing without Draconian options) and it's actually great to find a real challenge that somehow lacked during the first two Acts. Even overworld music is good, now.

Truly it's the Jrpg of the generation for me and it's a lot better than Dragon Quest VIII. I mean, DQ VIII was great but DQ XI is a masterpiece, a classic. Only downside is the soundtrack, but after 140 hours i became accustomed and actually are not bothered anymore by it.

Just picked this up on it's most recent steam sale, it's early days, but I can already tell i'm going to love this game. I've been wanting to play a traditional style JRPG for a while and this definitely scratches that itch.

The orchestral mod is excellent as well and totally changes the feeling of the game.

Hi guys, have some questions. Spoilers below:

I just forged the Sword of Light and it appears I'm near the end of the game. The party wants me to go fight Mordegon. I've pretty much done everything else and have completed 45 Side quests. But there's a few mysteries that are still unsolved....

1)It's about the little white Chibi ghosts that I cannot interact with. I went to one of the floating islands that had a ton of them just hanging around and chilling out. But there's a locked door that seemingly can only be opened with some sort of unique emblem. Now if I were to take a guess, I'd say whatever's behind this door would solve the mystery behind these little chibi ghosts, correct? But...how do I get in this place? Where is the emblem needed to open it? Or, are these little guys supposed to remain a mystery until I beat the game and go into the post game content?

2)The round cages containing treasures that are scattered around Erdrea remain locked. I still don't have the key. Should I have found the key by now? Or am I not meant to obtain it until I get to the post game content?

3)I've completed 45/45 side quests. Are these it? Or are there more to unlock?

Yeah, for now you're pretty much done with quests but more will open up in Act 3. Actually, "wait for Act 3" is basically the answer to all of your questions. Go beat the bad guy already!

I just finished the post-game, and there was something in the game I expected them to bring up eventually, but it never happened (unless I totally missed it).
It's these giant drawings you can see while riding Cetacea, reminding me of the Nazca lines. Is there any importance to them in the game, are they even brought up once?

I assume they are just artifacts from an earlier time, likely when the Watchers and humans were in contact with each other (and perhaps travel with Cetacea was actually more common, thus allowing people to actually see these things).

Still on plinking away at the main quest. I did the library last night. My memory of it was that the layout was tricky. It was actually straightforward and a little disappointing. At least the gold palace is coming up soon, now there's a horrible dungeon! I love the little incidental details in the library, the wrecktors and pigs sitting around listening to lectures, it's very cute.

So I dropped the game a long while back due to other releases but wanted to dive back in tonight . I recall I got stuck on where to go.

I'm now gathering the orbs or whatever and have access to the whole world it seems on my ship. One of these orbs seemed to lead me to a snow town but the town was locked up ? I started exploring thevast surrounding areas but kept getting dead ends.

Does anyone know based off of this info where I should go ?

Ask the queen in nautica. She will give u hints in which order to collect the orbs.
The frozen town orb will only be accessible once u collected a certain item

You need to head to Phnom Nohn and do the story there. It's in the Champs Savage, other direction from the Academy. Good luck getting back on the road to victory!

Not sure if Draconian increased enemy agility but it's so stupid that nearly every enemy in the game attacks before you even with meteorite bracer, if the get a surprise attack you have to sit there while every enemy gets 2 turns before you can act

So I'm doing the post game, attempted the third trial and got my ass handed to me by the boss at the end. Where's the best place to find and fight metal enemies in the world in order to level up?

So I just finished the part where you place all the orbs and...

what the hell is going on? So I understand what has happened thanks to the Queen but here's where I'm miffed. Hendrik is now the "Hero"? I get that he saved a bunch of people but he's somewhat responsible for what happened. I also don't understand why he still holds a grudge against the Luminary despite actually coming around and realizing he was wrong while atop the world tree. Also, why the hell is the King calling me his servant? I hope this shit doesn't keep going like this or I'll be pissed. I hope things change for the better, I should probably just keep playing instead of coming on here. I should keep playing right?

He doesn't really hold a grudge or if he does he comes around pretty quickly. The only particularly evil thing he was involved with was attacking Cobblestone and even then it tells you he stopped Jasper killing the villagers.

He's just supposed to be fiercely loyal to the king

OK here's the deal.....

I'm in Act 3 and right now I'm Angri-La doing the Wheel of Harma trials. I have passed the first 4 trials and now I'm on the Final Trial. My characters are ranging from Lvl 59-70. Most are in the in the mid-60s. Hero is at 70. The final trial is quite frankly kicking my ass. What I want to know is, am I a bit too underleveled to tackle this? I read around the net and some people are suggestion lvl99 before even thinking about it.
If by chance I want to level up some more and wait until I get to lvl99, can I do the main quest first? Can I beat the last boss and still go back and do the Wheel of Harma Final Trial? I'm mainly doing it so I can get the monk guy to go to Cobblestone and help rebuild it. How do you suggest I proceed? Any particular weapons/accessories/armor you feel are *must haves*?

Finally, what was your party line-up for the final trial?

Walk around the back to the left of the town (west). You'll need a key but there's a door that will let you in.

Also don't quit now. You're close to some pretty big stuff happening.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaan this game. Man. SO FUCKING GOOD.

I've enjoyed this shit more than I had any right to do so. I still haven't finished mind you, but I'm in the postgame about to start the second trial.

It's been a while since I had so much fun with an rpg and of course it had to be DQ. The good thing about not changing the formula "much" is that it's so damn refined it hurts. I'm not an expert in the series but it's the best one I've played for sure (finished IV, VIII and IX, started VII but it was so boring I dropped it halfway).

SPOILERS BELOW

Mod Edit: Added spoiler tags.

So I finished the main scenario, completed some side quests, had some fun then tried the final boss. He punk'd me. HARD. So I said fuck it and I leveled up all the characters to 99 (or close to) with the Haullelujah+Electro light method, finished the first trial, wished for the sword recipe, completed Cobblestone and I think after the second trial I'll just kill Calasmos. AFIK the third trial is just for cosmetic stuff and I don't care much as I'm olverlevelled anyway. Well, let's see, I plan on skipping most of the encounters so it should go fast. I'll just craft the last sword of light, wish to marry Gemma (of course) and call it quits. I'm sure the ending will be a tearjerker AND I'LL LOVE IT.

I got so far, and I'm so close to beating it, but I feel like I want to wait for the Switch release to dive back in and finish it for good. This game is amazing, and I appreciate so much of the stuff it does to enlongate the content and surprise it's players.

You have THREE major acts in the game! And it's not like, "oh, I haven't explored this part of the world yet," no, you go through the world with new things to explore and discover THREE times! That's crazy! Every time you think you're finished, there's more waiting for you! I love it, this game is awesome!

I hope you enjoy the ending, when you get to it! If you already have these, I gotta know though.

How in the heck do you get the books to upgrade the "ultimate" weapons? I've had so much trouble keeping fully upgraded late late game because I feel like I missed a book on upgrading at some point, and I'm curious if it's just somewhere I missed. If you also missed one of those books for those final weapons, I'd recommend looking up where they are so you don't miss out, I never did, and I regret it.

Well in the last trial (which I said I wouldn't do and I did lol) there's a set of weapons that don't need previous ones and they are stronger so that's that.

Ok done! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

The little drawbacks and references to other DQ in the ending are great. What a great game.

The only minus is the silent protagonist, that's one thing I wouldn't mind if it went away. I really really really hate silent protagonists nowadays. It's funny because some of my favorite games haven them (Suikoden or Zelda for example) but in 2019 it's just plain stupid. All the characters are so expressive and talking to each other and the silent protagonist looks up them with blandface and just grunts. Come the fuck on, that's such bullshit.

When people talk about hard mode, that mostly means setting draconian quest "enemies are super strong" on right?

Also, hard mode seems reasonable. So I'm assuming normal mode must be really easy then?

Yup, the game's balanced to be easygoing without the Draconian Quests on, but you should understand just what changes with "Harder Enemies."

So! Mechanics lesson.

In DQ, every single point of strength contributes 1-1 in additional Attack power for any attack that doesn't strike more then once (barring special circumstances and uniquely defined abilities). Magical Might, however, works on a curve based on the spell it's used for, which while much higher for DQXI to balance out spells in the lategame, are still mostly like this.

This basically means that spellcasters rely on levels for better spells to cast to increase damage and utility, while physical skills grow much more directly with every point of strength, regardless of whether it comes from equipment, levels or seeds.

Defense, however, does a lot less work compared to Strength. For every FOUR points of defense, gained through equipment and 1-1 gains through Resilience, a Single point of damage is negated from physical sources. This means that while high defense helps out a bit, High HP and methods to recover from damage quickly are the most effective way to deal with damage, though defensive techniques do exist to somewhat bridge the gap through tanking.

While you'd think magic would win out because it CANNOT be resisted statistically, only reduced through equipment and natural resistance, the previously mentioned curve does a lot to stymie the damage potential of magic without serious buffs to magic damage directly, which even Physical damage can benefit better from. Plus, critical hits completely bypass defense and deal extra damage on top, so no matter what defense the enemy's packing, a guaranteed critical will knock it down in short order! (Looking at you, metal slimes!)

It's not that magic sucks, far from it, especially since you gain a ton of utility from magic users in the party! It's just that physical attacks will be the biggest concern for dealing and receiving damage. It should be noted, however, that Magical effects are MUCH more likely to stick with Higher values of the magical stat that define them, so status effects can be more reliably afflicted with better magical talents.

Why did I go on this major tangent about game mechanics?

To prepare you for Draconian Enemies.

You see, the Draconian Quest "Stronger Enemies" isn't a rebalancing of the game's difficulty, it's a simple 20% increase to the enemies stats. If confronted with this information normally, one would assume this would simply be a slightly harder experience, but still doable since it's not a straight "double damage" mod.

However, now that you know the mechanics, it can be made MUCH more clear just how this will affect your game. The 20% increase to both Strenght, Defense and HP will make many fights much longer and much more intense. Regular fights early on will be battles to survive, and many bossfights starring physically strong bosses will be touch-and-go if you cannot keep up with the bosses attacks.

Early on, you can hope a guest character will take a hit for the party, since they have infinite Hp, but because of the change to enemy stats, even their most powerful attacks are functionally useless against the bosses they help you with. This makes an early section with Just your main character and a guest for several fight SUPER AMAZING, but I digress.

Because of these boosted stats, you will constantly deal with a major divide between enemy Strength and party Hp that will require no shortage of luck and planning to overcome. Many bosses with strong physical attacks, Especially in the early game, where your party is small and your abilities and equipment are limited, will deal deadly large amounts of damage, or will very likely inflict status ailments on your party due to other stats improving their chances.

Conversely, enemies using magical attacks will not be nearly as damagerous as physical attackers, but most bosses will still have tricks that will mess you up if you aren't careful, and even most magically focused bosses will have dangerous physical attacks!
You will need to learn these bossfights once you fight them, and make an effort to plan out a strategy that will allow you to overcome their most debilitating assaults. You will learn what works, and what doesn't, and you will even have to reassign skillpoints away from more traditional skills to those that will give you a fighting chance.

And you will most likely have more fun with the game and battle system then ANY OTHER DRAGON QUEST, because of how tense and rewarding even Normal fights will be!!!

I am in no way trying to scare you away from playing with "Hard Mode" on, but rather I want to inform you of what you will be getting yourself into.

Dragon Quest XI, due to the varied and powerful options to improve and diversify your characters and their abilities and equipment, is simultaneously the most accessible Dragon Quest, and the Easiest. Playing without "Hard Mode" will give you a fun ride without many, if Any difficulties.

But if you decide to take a chance, and play with even Just "Hard Mode" (which I reccomend, as the other options reduce your options and growth to a degree that I find more suitable to a second play through), you will fight, you will toil, you will come close to the Razor Th(R)in divide between defeat and victory, make one last desperate assault with your last character, AND...

Fell the Terrible Beast before you, and Bring Pride to the Legend of the Luminary!!!

So, in conclusion, play it with the Draconian Quest for Stronger Enemies, it makes the game very fun and challenging. It will even out around the mid game, but by then you will be equipped to make the combat more fairly balanced anyway.

Without it, the game is super easy, even if you put all the other restrictions on, so take it off if you just want to have fun overpowering monsters and experiencing the story. Keep it on to have fun with challenging and rewarding game mechanics.

You can remove any Draconian Quest Restrictions at any church at any time, but you cannot put any Draconian Quests back on if you take them off, so be careful!

Finally beat the game! I got it at release but was too busy and other games came along, so it took a minute to beat. This being my first DQ was a nice experience. I still think this game dragged a bit and I still dislike part 3 but it was a fun ride.

Got it on Friday on PC, DL'd the orchestral mod, and I'm about 7 hours in.

How is this so good? I finished DQ1 on android and tried DQ 3, 5 and 7 and none of them hooked me. I was almost scared to get DQ11 because I wasn't sure that the series is for me, but holy crap is this good.

Now can someone tell me what the mini medals are for? I found like 10 of them and I don't see them in my bags.

I believe they're listed under the misc/settings list? The part of the menu that has your stats like time played, etc. You'll eventually come across an area where you can exchange them for items and equipment.

Finally finished Act 2 with Strong Monster on. The last three bosses were HAAAAAAAAAAARD, but I finally made it.
What a wonderful credit sequence... Really felt like the end of a wonderful game.

Quick question. Are there things to do in Act 2 before moving on in Act 3 ? Optional scenes, stuff, recipes ?

Finally finished Act 2 with Strong Monster on. The last three bosses were HAAAAAAAAAAARD, but I finally made it.
What a wonderful credit sequence... Really felt like the end of a wonderful game.

There are some optional scenes you can miss (basically you doing a victory lap through some towns) if you advance into part 3 without seeing them. But I think they should all be marked on your map?

Is there any advantage to each of the battle modes?

Also, are there any good guides to this game? I just completed Dragon Quest V and having the Bradygames guide helped me so much. Mostly I liked having a checklist of things to do before I left the area.

I bought the V-Jump guide book which has maps and a glossary of quests and pickups. The Square Enix guide is more comprehensive I believe. There are, as far as I'm aware no official guides in English.

Free mode can be slightly faster because if you move your characters close to the enemy your characters don't jump back to their starting position after every attack and the enemy your character is standing closest to is always pre-selected.

Other than this, there's no real advantage. Moving around doesn't actually let you evade or anything.

Good to know!! I have it set to classic because I don't want to walk around during combat.

Regarding what to do before you leave- though it doesn't include other things you may want to find, the game will at least show where quests are available on an area's map. And then your quest log will even indicate everything that's currently available in the game in general.

I thiiiink the only exceptions are (understandably) quests where you have to have done a prior one first, along with one for getting a jackpot in a late-game casino where the quest weirdly doesn't show as available till you talk to someone there? I think that's how that one worked? It's been a while.

How far into the game is the Casino? Steam says I'm 25 hours in... I've been putting off playing more but I'm getting the itch again.

I wish the S version was on steam 😭

The Casino in P uerto Valor?
I'd say that's roughly 10% into the game? Counting the post-game as the third act.

Edit: Not saying that this is a 250 hour game (necessarily, guess it depends on how much time you spend at the casino).
But it's a 3-act game, and that Casino is about a third of the way into the first act.

So I recently bought this on Switch and was surprised that there was an option to use arranged music, concidering how much bad stuff I've heard about the original sound mix.

Is this option available on all console versions? I want to buy it on the PS4 as well since it looks so good on Pro.

Howdy all, I've never played a DQ game before this one and am SUPER loving it. I'm curious as to how far in the game I am though? I have like 20ish hours on my clock, but a good bit of that is idling while I step away to help with my kid or other adult stuff...

So can anyone give me a ballpark guess as to how far in I am?

I just finished winning the Octagionia tournament after defeating the spider boss.
