I just bought the full Dolby access after spending 2 days with it, the transformation of sound is huge especially with Atmos content.
I have this on PC, but is there a way to permanently keep it on? Windows seems to disable it whenever it wants.
I haven't had that happen yet it should stay on all the time

Atmos and DTS X are both fantastic.

Being able to easily tell when someone is above or below you in MP shooters is so helpful.

Are there any native Atmos games, and how do you set them up do you need Atmos active before launching the game or are they in the game options?

What platform are you talking about? For instance, on PC, Overwatch has an Atmos option in the sound settings so you could consider that native. You can also by Atmos and apply it at the system level on PC or Xbox.

I tried Cyberpunk tonight it sounds completely different with Dolby access turned on, the firefights are especially cool

I only really used it in Overwatch and it made things a bit too muddy for my taste. but the tech is really cool.
I still have beef that Overwatch on Xbox never got native Dolby Atmos support. Overwatch was used as an example for Dolby Atmos' headphone support on Xbox Wire's announcement post back in 2016, but the native experience would only ever be on PC. I'd love to try Dolby Atmos on Overwatch for PC, but my PC copy of the game goes unplayed until it has cross-progression.

I assume there's a chance that console Overwatch 2 could get 3D audio now that the new console twins both have the feature, and it wouldn't just be Xbox getting a significant additional feature over PS4 as it would have been in 2016/7.

I wish Xbox would have a feature that let you know if you set up Dolby Atmos for Headphones correctly on a per game basis - maybe a icon that shows on the guide similar to Auto-HDR and soon FPS Boost. So often I fiddle around with audio settings on Xbox One games w/ native Dolby Atmos, like Resident Evil 2, and I'd love it if on a system level if the Xbox would just give me clear visual confirmation that there's the optimal handshake between my game (and the settings I chose) and my headphones w/ Dolby Atmos as the selected headset format going on. Hopefully one day Dolby Atmos for Headphones is mistake-proof/automated on Xbox.

I bought it on Xbox, is it always on? Or do I have to turn on some setting? When I plug my headphones to 3.5 mm it's just working?

I prefer DTS, it also handles the party chat audio in a more practical way than DA

When I compare DTS Headphone X 2.0 with Dolby Atmos for Headphones, I find that that DTS has a superior positional accuracy, but the overall sound is MUCH MUCH more tin-can and hollow. Is this something you find to be true as well, or am I missing an important setting?

Ultimately they are tuned differently , both companies are specialists in audio and will have just gone for different sound profiles.
I find Dolby too bassy to use whilst in party chat, but that is going to be a product of my headset and my taste

I started using my SteelSeries Arctis 1X on my Series X last night. I originally used it with just standard stero headphone settings in the dash, and it didn't sound that great. However, I switched to Windows Sonic for Headphones from the settings, and it made a world of difference.

Windows Sonic is lower in quality than either DTS Headphone:X, Dolby Atmos for Headphones or both of them as HRIR profiles in HeSuVi on the PC.

The audio quality in Sonic just dies compared to other solutions, but definitely better at certain times than pure Stereo in games.

With your headphones connected to the Xbox (like wired to the controller as you mention), access the Dolby Access app on Xbox and it'll walk you through the system settings (Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Headset Format: Dolby Atmos for Headphones), and once you get the green checkmark in-app a settings page opens within Dolby Access to tune your experience.

You'll get virtual surround sound at the very least across content, but there can be user error as far as the user choosing optimally compatible settings on a per game basis. Games won't necessarily default to surround sound or Dolby Atmos (if a game supports DA natively) when you have headphones plugged in with Dolby Atmos selected as your headset format.

Repeating myself, I hope Xbox streamlines this in the future for developers and users (while still providing users the option for more control if they want to toggle a hypothetical mistake-proof feature off) and makes it plainly obvious it's working as they design something like FPS Boost icon to display in the guide for compatible BC games. And adjacent to that, it'd be cool if a game like Hellblade actually read your headset format and advised you to turn off Dolby Atmos to better experience the artistic intent.
