The shooting is great, almost everything else is lackluster though. The setting/atmosphere is only great at the start and one other area, the pacing is really bad, character control is atrocious for a none survival horror game and all the worst things one could imagine from an escort mission are there.
.Resident Evil 4 still has amongst the best pacing, encounter design, and overall game structure with incredibly satisfying mechanics today compared to everything that has come since. It's one of the most brilliantly coherent and focused game visions ever executed. It is absolutely committed to a singular vision and evolving that vision throughout the experience, never once dwelling one one particular encounter or puzzle type, each lasting just long enough to engage and excite and then quickly abandoned in favour of something new. There's a convincing sense of progression and journey as you move between locations, an absurd number of unique and memorable locations that feel believably interconnected but absolutely unique by their own rights. And the core game systems, of simply shooting and besting your opponents, are refined to an absurd degree, immediately accessible and simple in their base functions yet surprisingly deep, enough to raise the skill ceiling that growing and bettering yourself as a player is instantly reflected in moment-to-moment performance.
The art direction and audio design is on point and focused at conveying particular moods and tones, all of which equally evolve and adapt to emerging encounter types and locational changes. Tension is matched with excitement, as the game toes the line between legitimate stalking horror and an overwhelming rush of adrenaline, all the while backed by an absurd doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously narrative that brilliantly sets up each location, encounter, and set piece.
It's a remarkable accomplishment of video game design and should remain an absolute template of how to get literally fucking everything right in a game design direction and production.

It's alright, you just need to play more shooters.
Sorry but it's actually the most masterfully paced TPS on the marketThe shooting is great, almost everything else is lackluster though. Can't even remember how many times I dropped a play through of RE4 due to how long and boring the castle and tombs are, but different people with different tolerance levels I guess. For me, few things break the pacing of a shooter worse than no shooting sections, stupid brain dead puzzles and obstacles designed around one of the worst escort mechanics out there.Sorry but it's actually the most masterfully paced TPS on the market

All this proves is you've not played REmake or RE0
Excellent retort....
Worst? It's one of the few escort missions to get it right. Ashley exhibits actual intelligence compared to most brain dead escortees, with how she responds to the environment and the player. She follows closely behind Leon rather than following a scripted path and she'll actively work to get out of the way of your shots. And that's all only when you don't drop her in a dumpster to get her out of the combat zone entirely.
The Wii version will never not be the most fun, even if it's broken. Headshot edition indeed.
Look the weight in combat in REmake and RE0, both came out before RE4. Yet RE4 guns feel like pee shooters and enemies react as such.
How far does her awareness of the environment goes? When you ask her to wait in place she'll literally stand there to death regardless of what ever is happening. She sit down in place to avoid you shooting her, except if you're pointing your gun toward her, sitting down in place is pretty stupid considering you're pointing it in that direction because that's where the enemies are coming from. Her slow robotic movement doesn't help in those situations either.Worst? It's one of the few escort missions to get it right. But you already have the best version...The controls work in the sense that they can add to the tension, but they're super clumsy and can be frustrating. I was about 4 hours into it on PC until I heard a switch version was coming.
Thank you for proving gifs that prove my point. Look how floaty and weightless the enemies react. As for the power, you're lying to yourself if you think you can 1 shot enemies even with a shotgun. He's clearly maxed out their stats, anyone that's played RE4 can clearly see that.
These aren't AI issues as they're part of the gameplay design. How far does her awareness of the environment goes? Most of it was a product of its time, but it was still frustrating then and certainly wouldn't hold up today.
I didn't say they are! These aren't AI issues as they're part of the gameplay design.
