i prefer any & all other final fantasy combat systems to the one in ffvii remake. as far as that game's system, i agree completely with this:

- Combat.
Full disclosure: I do not like Real-Time-with-Pause combat. Never have. So, I am obviously biased against the game here. But I suppose I can explain what I really dislike about it: it's essentially the worst of both worlds. It's mediocre action combat constantly interrupted by commands input which I find really tedious, with lots of chaotic elements going on that are beyond your control. And yes I'm playing it "right" and not button mashing. I'm using skills to stagger enemies and then spam my strongest damaging skills while they're down, I optimize my materia/weapon skills/etc. as best I can, I even peeked at this thread and I'm not seeing anything I'm doing that go against the general tips there. I am experienced with RPGs and I am not struggling with the combat. I just dislike it, the whole flow of it, it's tedious and annoying for the most part, and just not fun to play. I don't see this changing. Bring back full ATB or even pure turn-based, or go FULL action like Ys games do. Not this in-between shit. And worse, this is setting trends, as I'm hearing future Kiseki games may be inspired by this system, FML. "Fuck off nowadays JRPGs" - someone, probably me

one person's 'challenge' can often be another person's tedium...

I think it's my favorite, yes. I generally prefer action combat anyway, but there's a marriage of animation, character feel, and character building via materia, weapons, etc that makes the combat in FFVIIR feel really good, and like you're pulling something off when you're doing well.

X and X-2 are my favorite but I think FF7 remake is the best after those two. I like it so much better than the original FF7 where it was just totally mindless and no challenge and doing the same actions over and over.

I'd honestly love it if more RPGs adopted this system. Xenogears would've been perfect.

I've usually been a real stickler for a return to turn based combat but this ended up being pretty good.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but it's certainly up there. I might enjoy FFV's, FFX's, and FFXII's a bit more.

It's the best battle system I've seen from the series in 13.5 years, at least!

It needs refinement before I would put it above X or XIII-2. I even prefer XV, but only because Noctis is individually more fun to control than any of the party members in VIIR.

I'm not qualified to comment because I never played the 13 sub-series or 15, and I only played the 7R demo, but off hand I liked the combat in X and X-2 better.

13 was more fun for me hands down. I didn't have fun with Remake, but I also disliked stopping the action to go through menus. Pick one or the other IMO. XV was more fun for me as well because it felt like it knew what it wanted to be more.

If this works for you, more power to you.

X-2 is still the queen for me. When it comes to real time action battles though FF7R takes the cake easily. FFXV was utter shit with its battle system.

Classic: X-2 > X > XIII > XII > 9 > 8 > 6 > 7 1-5 are on the same level
Real Time: FF7R > Dissedia series >>>> FFXV
Special: FFXI > FFXIV

Its the best until FF16 is out with the actual battle system if that DMC5 designer is to be trusted.

Curious, I know you haven't enjoyed the post SNES FF's, but what's your fav?
My fav out of the post-SNES ones or my fav in general?

Boy do I have the elaboration for you :D
www.resetera.com

LttP: Final Fantasy 7 Remake - This game is honestly pretty mediocre (may have open spoilers) [up: beat it, and "mediocre" was generous] Spoiler

I was waiting for a PC port of FF7R so I could mod out all the things about it that would inevitably annoy me. But, well, it dropped on PS+ and you can't beat free, so here I am, finally playing this for real. I tried the demo when it came out and while the nostalgia factor was strong, I didn't...

Edit: oh, beaten to it haha

There's more posts in the thread where I complain about other details too, wonder if I should add them to my OP

In general, I just remember you mentioned you preferred pre PS FF mainlines.

Yes. 100% I absolutely agree it's the best battle system in any final fantasy game ever. I freaking love it.

Still think X-2 had the best battles in the series. I loved the dresspheres and the strategies they opened up, and it was a fast-paced turn-based system. I liked VII Remake's battles, but I wouldn't put them in my top 3 for the whole series (probably X-2, X, and XIII-2).

I agree with you on both. XIII was my previous favorite (it saved the game), but VIIR's is SO good. It's hard to imagine going back to some of the previous iterations.

LOL no. It's too easy to break and it's not that much fun to break.

I'd probably say 10-2. Really great job system with some really tight atb management.

Best is a weird word because obviously subjective taste, etc, but it is absolutely not a favorite of mine. It feels like busy work most of the time. Also, I am absolutely shocked to see people enjoyed the combat in XIII. More power to you, I guess! Give me X (or the ATB systems) any day, all day.

Except if we include Tactics, because Tactics is fairly indisputable in my opinion.

You are not alone in thinking that. I do wish it becomes the standard going forward; the level of control, fast-paced action and tactical options comes together perfectly.

It certainly is the best ARPG combat system in the series (don't have high hopes for XVI from what I've seen) and I was never much of a fan of FF turn-based system (lacks depth compared to its peers).

She had prefaced her opinions of the game with how she's not a fan of real-time with stop action systems plus her core dislike lies with the 'combat flow'. That's just personal preference to me.

It's certainly my favourite of the ones I've played. There's definitely some room for improvement but I had a lot of fun with it and I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves over the rest of the remake series.

God no. I'd put most games in the series above it. I think it beats 15, but... that's about it.

I was honestly extremely skeptical how it would play in the end, but I really feel like they knocked it out of the park.
One of the best modern JRPG systems for sure.

It's definitely the best of the HD era games, without a doubt. I like Gambits but they are really only necessary in 12's battle system. Turn-based is great but it's not like they can really pull off something like that in 2020.

Also, the paradigm system was extremely lame imo. There was like, zero need to experiment or mix things up even in the late game

It's probably near the best playing combat system in the series, yeah. X gives it a run for its money, and V makes the ATB work so well with the job system that it's also up there

I liked X the best

It was the only game where I felt like really thinking about my moves and how they would effect turn order and the flow of the battle. Plus it incorporated a sort of hard counter system with characters so I was always thinking about who would be best right now, and the bosses all had specific things you could exploit about them. It was the most purely strategic outside of Tactics.

9 and down were pretty much just spam attack with occasional other skills, and so was 12 but now it was automated attacking.

For me it's a yes. I don't think FF ever excelled in the combat department, but VII Remake was the first FF that I would play for the combat alone even if the rest was bad. The older turn-based FFs were not bad, but if you would ask me which JRPGs had the best turn-based combat systems I don't think I would rank any of the older FF games near the top (X-2 would probably be my favorite of the classic ATB titles)

The best attempt at an action system, yes. Too bad it doesn't seem to be going anywhere else.

Overall though I'd still say X.

Nah. I think the way it blends turn based with action is clever (stick to one character too long and you aggro enemies), but with only two of the four playable characters actually being fun to use, it leaves a lot to be desired. It also gets clunky when you switch to someone else but then have to command the AI to do a specific action because they're doing something sub optimal. I think it'll get better when they add more characters. That way I can at least not use Barret or Aerith.
