I'm just wondering whether the consoles next year will have a new interface? At first, I thought it was because of the change in architectures between the generations, but then I remembered the PS4 interface kept a lot of the PS3's design language, more than XB1/360.

In my mind, it makes more sense to iterate now on what exists, especially given the evident emphasis on continuity nowadays. That said, I wouldn't really care if the Xbox UI was rebooted. I love my X1X but the interface is a frequent annoyance.

Sony have confirmed that the PS5 will have a new interface.

Not too sure about Microsoft, but they've been changing theirs so often that it wouldn't surprise me if Series X had a new one.

XBOX will probably get a huge update but it will be on all systems. I expect Series X to drive things forward.

I sure hope so. I find all the interfaces on all consoles sluggish. Please give me an interface that doesn't stutter, it drives me crazy.

That's actually one of the things I await the most. The User eXperience on both console is quite awful I think, and the worst part is the store. Most of the games on PlayStation store barely have a description and the Microsoft Store on my Xbox is just plain slow.

I think the next Xbox will use Xbox new design language you can see right in the Xbox app for PC (Game Pass) and the Game Bar for Windows 10.

All I want from consoles interfaces/OS is for them to be quick and snappy. PS4 OS in particular is excruciatingly slow.

I honestly think the two best interfaces I've seen are steam and Xbox PC beta app. My two cents though

I'm expecting a much more simplified interface from Microsoft this time around. They really missed the mark this generation with the Xbox One interface.

Doubt it. Half the reason it's slow is that it's embedding mixer videos in a tab. If mixer was not a huge focus (it is), it'd have like 4 tabs. Home, social, game pass, store

There is always, ALWAYS room for improvement. Especially when you iterate once every 5-or-so years.

I actually really like the Xbox One interface outside of it being unresponsive / sluggish. It had quite a bit of a learning curve, but once I figured it out it then grew on me. If anything, it just has too many options that I doubt many people use like app groups.

Interface should be like PlayStation 3 home. When we put on the console, we are immediately directed to a customizable avatar on a couch watching tv. We could directly enter the apps we want through that tv screen or we can get of the couch and explore PlayStation network aka PlayStation home 4.0. It will be like a more advance sims simulator where user can get rich from. We can build mega mansion, drive luxury sports car and live la vida loca

A new interface is part of that next gen experience, it would be disappointing if I boot up the new console and it just looks the same imo

All functionality available through command line, have to write your own shell script to open your games. I like it.

Apologies, I was chuckling as I quoted this, thinking of the Google Search team in some documentary I saw before. The context was the simple iconic Search page in white.

On a side note, it's actually a design philosophy by others too: https://youtu.be/yQ4L7zCTG-M

P.S. Terminal is the best keyboard-based interface ever invented. GUIs for mouse/touch. With the next generation we can hope for new or polished solutions towards seamless AR/VR/Motion/Speech inputs. Not just a GUI cleanup

I expect them both to have new interfaces, but the Xbox UI might blend between gens. I'm just sick and tired of them completely overhauling where shit is and rearranging the menus every year lol. The Speed will be a huge difference for both consoles I'm assuming.

Microsoft is beta testing a new interface right now. I have to imagine it will be used for both old and new gen systems.

Which is good because the version of the preview I am on is awesome. At long last they have finally brought back the windows media center's twist interface (which was also used for the zune). For those who don't know, it is much like a vertical XMB. There are no left and right tabs at all. Instead, you scroll down through various groups and they open up to display information laterally. They best part is that aside from that first group, literally all of it is customizable. You can add groups, game folders, clans, specific games, apps whatever.

It goes like this for me:

-Home Group (game in disk tray, recently played games etc)
-My games and Apps
-frequently played games
-My Backlog folder
-Xbox Store
-backlog
-Official Gamepass tab
-gamepass backlog
-Official Gold tab
-Games with gold backlog
- Media players (bluray, netflix etc)
-settings
-add more

The first and last are the only ones that HAVE to be there. Everything else I chose to add. At this point the only thing I want is the ability to have moving backgrounds.

This. I expect turning on the Series X and One will look the same. It's amazing looking at the evolution of the dashboard. They have dropped all non-gaming features and are wrapping it around Game Pass.

i just hope Microsoft brings back Snap or some form of it. Used to use snap all the time in games where I was just grinding. I know they were talking about bringing PiP to Xbox One but that never materialized.

Would like Sony to bring a form of that as well tbh.

Also hope all the features we have now on both consoles don't just regress as we go on to next-gen.

I would assume SSDs would solve a lot of these problems.

Maybe, but I'm not sure that's all there is to it. It's a bit ridiculous that all the current boxes can render games with all the visual porn at 60fps, but then you pop into the OS and move around and it just starts to stutter and cache and lag. Some people aren't as sensitive to that, but I just goddamn hate it, it makes the console feel cheap if the OS isn't snappy and fast and a joy to use.
