As someone who has never played any of the classic RE games i really wish they had an option to be able to play the ps1 version visuals of the game. I loved how in the Master Chief Collection you have the option to switch between the classic and the anniversary visuals i even preferred playing the classic visuals.

Absolutely or at least a option to unlock the full original game like Medievil on the PS4 did. Much as I love the new style for Crash and Spyro, I would love to see the classic graphics at time to see how it compared.

Nah, it's cool but I only see it as a bonus.

Plus, that usually means that the game is basically a 1:1 port unless they redo the original game as well.

Yes - they should, to preserve history.

The Monkey Island Special Editions are the prime example of this with switching on the fly.

This is my feeling too. I generally want a game rebuilt from the ground up when a game is remade. Use the information learnt over the years of game development to improve mechanics/controls/level design, not just nicer looking graphics.

Would that even work with the Resident Evil remakes? There's so much in the new games that isn't in the originals that it would be impossible without creating new graphics for it.

It depends on the game.

It's easy with Halo, because the original games and the remasters are both first-person.
Something like Resident Evil would be more difficult. The original games have fixed cameras, whereas the remakes are over-the-shoulder games. It's not quite as easy as it is with Halo.

It's not impossible, but it would also require potentially more effort than is necessary.

I don't think the MCC way would work, but i would't mind to have like a separate mode where you can play the PS1 version or something like that. : P

YES

I wish the SotC remake would let me switch to old graphics, they're way better!

I don't think that would work when they're entirely new models, animations and rendering methods? Might as well just include the original game as an option.
The more ambitious the remake the less viable this seems.

It'd be nice if they included the untouched original for completion sake, like how King of Fighters 2002 UM included the Neo Geo version in its initial release (though it was removed for all later releases for some reason).

The recent Panzer Dragoon remake is decent, I like it ok and I'm sure the issues will be ironed out, but I wish they included the original packaged in as well.

edit: ListeningGarden great minds

Ideally yes, as I would like remakes to offer both a way to preserve the original while giving a newer, modern perspective on things.

Most recently I was hoping that the original Panzer Dragoon would be included as an unlockable with the remake, much like it was for Orta on the Xbox, and feel like it was a bit of a missed opportunity because of PD's unique and identifiable art direction.

I guess I don't see that as "including the original graphics" though. That's simply including another game as a bonus.
the distinction seems mighty slim.

what is the point of wanting the old graphics if not to play through the old game?

obviously it's nice if it's included in the same package, but that shouldn't be absolutely necessary.

I don't see how this would work for every remake. For an RE1 style remake where they're essentially keeping the game the same while updating the graphics (more of a remaster then) I could see it working.
For an RE2/3 style remake that just seems like too much extra work. Because then what you're really doing is essentially doubling the work of the team. They can't port the PS1 graphics into REmake 2 because it's all brand new.

A lot of people are requesting the old OST for FF7 because they weren't fans of the new soundtrack, but this also doesn't make any sense when there are all these new scenes as well as shifting battle music compositions that never existed prior.

Depends on how it's remade/remastered. Either make it a toggle like Halo or just include the original as an unlockable if a toggle isn't feasible.

I think it's a good idea to have older graphics available, or better yet, have the original game fully accessible on the disc. The MCC is my gold standard for this kind of remake treatment.

There was nothing easy about it with Halo 1 and 2 nor does genre play a factor. Both Halo 1 and 2 anniversary are running multiple game engines at once, the original PC code and a new graphics engine on top of it. For the most part they don't alter anything with the legacy game code other than increase the framerates and image quality. Even the audio is the same.

With the Resident Evil games they are ditching the original source code entirely and creating new assets from scratch on new tech, even the Gamecube Remake did that.

I especially want remakes to keep the story intact and not add a crapload of dumb scenes that destroy the characters and story.

For gameplay it depends.

I don't care about graphics even slightly. artstyle, useless animation... that's different.

Always. I like angles and low res textures.
Except in modern games.

I'm for just including the original game as a bonus. My ignorant ass thinks it would be easier than having the devs layer on the old graphics onto the newly built levels, character models, and cutscenes, all the while factoring into the new animations and lighting and whatnot. Plus, it's another way to preserve old games and let more people experience the source material as it is.

I mean it depends doesn't it ?

FF7 remake is a totally different game. To include the 'original ' graphics would mean a whole second new set of assets

But its be good for remasters like the Halo ones or to include the original game as a bonus

Yep. My favourite part of the Monkey Island remasters was toggling between the old and new.

I realise it might not always be feasible though, depending on the type of game.

With the age of a lot of these, it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility to include the original games themselves via emulation or whatever, but there would be snags here and there. I'm sure getting something like original RE3 running on PC or PS4 would be a bit less work than Xbox One, and I can't see Capcom justifying the work needed to make that happen (just an example, I'm sure there are other similar cases).

Outside of including the game somehow they should absolutely include some art, cinematics, and history on the titles. Maybe as unlockables. It's a shame how many of these remasters never even make a hint at the original at all.

It doesn't make sense for remakes which more often than not aren't 1:1 in terms of content. It wouldn't make sense for the new RE games, because they're not the same games anymore.

For remasters, yes, it would make a lot more sense.

It's really awesome when it does or has the game inside the game but I don't need it, what Id rather have is backwards compatibility so I can play both whenever I want

They should include the original game in its totality, not just as a skin for the new game.

If all of the game is just a texture pack basically a remaster soundtrack then yes I think they should include the classic look and sound to the game. But if they make it from the ground up I wouldn't mind the original game being part of the package deal if you want to play the game for what it was.

If you read the OT you'd think Square Enix did a fabulous job updating FF7 and keeping the same texture quality as the original. Best of both worlds

Absolutely. The option should be always available, either on the fly or as an extra mode.

It depends on the game.

You can really only get away with that if the game is a 1:1 remake and most aren't. I did love that 343 gave you the option for both Halo CE Anniversary and Halo 2 Anniversary.

Would be great to include it on the disc if possible but i like remakes "remade". So, both if possible.

I'm playing through thE shadow of the colossus remake on PS4 and I've been wishing I could see the old PS2 graphics while i play, and see if my memory matches up.

I'd like to see it for all remakes sure but in the case of RE2 to RE2 idk how you'd do that. For purely graphical upgrades it wouldn't be nearly as big of an issue.

I do wish they would include the originals. In my mind no remake completely replaces the original game but too often if feels like they get treated that way.

Yes. I won't always use it, but in the case they totally destroy the game with the new graphics, I like have a modern release of a classic, without all the new graphics.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition taught me that this is a needed thing. Wow that game's redone graphics ruined the game.

In more in the line to have the original games as unlockables, but overall i think it's always a great idea to figure out how you can experience the original game within the remake

The Resident evil remakes are way more complex than the MCC. In the MCC layout wise everything is the same, in the RE remakes literally everything was made from the ground up in a new engine. Like, there are multiple rooms in the RPD that don't exist in the original.
