Could be worse, could be better. Biggest bummer is VII Remake sucking up so much talent and development time, even though I really enjoy that game, I would much rather have the people involved making a new game. Especially one without Nomura and Nojima's oversight.

XIV is fine for what it is but deeply disappointing as The Flagship Final Fantasy story these days. Both in terms of the limits of what an MMO can do and also how hard it leans on throwback nostalgia stuff. Which is a problem that's only exacerbated by the other games now being a remake and a Final Fantasy 1 prequel/retelling or whatever origin actually ends up being.

I guess we're a long way from the unbeatable run of all time classics that ended with X-2. Lots of polarising entries in that run of games but all ambituous and swinging for the fences in a way that the modern stuff isn't. Even XIII and XV are more unique than what we currently have, regardless of the quality of the games.

So yeah. Mixed. I still enjoy the games but I want to see bolder ideas and harder swings. Also I'd love turn based ATB combat to come back but I'm not crazy enough to ask for it lmao that dream is tragically dead.

13 was rough, 14 had a rough launch (though I've heard it's great now), 15 was awful, the Crystal Chronicles remake was awful, Origins' tone is laughably bad, FF7R was good from the bit I played, but it took them five years to get out part one and we're not seeing part two until at least 2023. Also spinoffs moved to mobile and there's been a severe dropoff in meaningful spinoffs.

I would say that I am mixed-positive about the current state of Final Fantasy. I'm one of the few people who really loved the FXIII trilogy but I absolutely despised FFXV in every way so much that I actually started to lose interest in the franchise despite previously being a mega fan. That and all the mobile games and gacha stuff and terrible steam/mobile ports slowly started killing my appreciation of past games as well. Pixel remaster recently reopened the wound.

However, FF7 Remake was great and XVI looks really good so that makes me very hopefull for the future. FF origin being a Team ninja FF game is also a dream come true. I hope for the best.

Nope. Not even a little. I love FF7 remake but its a remake of an excellent game. FF14 is overrated and I'm not a fan of 16 having 14's look and aesthetic. Sure I'll wait to see more and looking forward to seeing more. But I'm not that happy with where final fantasy is right now.

Don't care about Mobile/MMO myself but i'm happy that they make alot of money so we can keep getting huge blockbusters like FF7R.

Only way I could be happier is if Matsuno were to announce he's making FFT2.

This is a bit silly. You're trying to find a way to tell yourself FFVII Remake doesn't count because then you wouldn't be able to say "not even a little."

The original being an excellent game has absolutely zero impact on whether the remake is good. This isn't Link's Awakening where it's a 1:1 remake. FFVII Remake might be telling the same story (kind of) but it is a brand new game, built from the ground up.

I enjoy FFXIV immensely and looking forward to FFXVI considering they made my favorite expansion, but things like FF7 Remake and FF Origin leaves me numb and are overly disappointing by their lack of originality at almost every level. FF7R is still just a glorified spiritual sequel of FF13 as a game for example.

I believe there are some studios inside Square Enix that needs some fresh blood instead of leaving the same old men that keeps doing the same mistakes since the PS2 era. Only then would Final Fantasy thrive. They had their time.

Definitely mixed, but better than it was in the PS360 era.

XIV might be the best game in the series, I have high hopes for XVI, and I really enjoyed 7R for the most part with some concerns (mostly pertaining to the sequels), but XV was still pretty bad and Origin might as well only exist for its gameplay

They just released one of the best games ever made last year, so yeah.

FFXV, while deeply flawed, I also enjoyed very much with all the DLC.

Looking forward to FFXVI. Just a shame about FFXIV being nowhere near as good as FFXI.

It's come a long way since the PS3 era. That almost felt like a death knell.

FFXIV rocks. FFVII Remake rocks. FFXVI will probably rock. Origin might well prove that it's not for me. But whatever. Things are good.

It's been a complete disaster since like 2006* and every bright spot has been a remaster of something that was already good or games like Bravely Default or Octopath Traveler that deliberately hearken back to the earliest titles.

(this judgment is excluding XIV as I don't fuck with MMOs, heard very good things)

Mixed, especially after the trainwreck that was the XIII saga, FFVII Remake is making me hopeful once more though

XIV and 7R are amazing and they have a fantastic team behind XVI so yeah I'm happy.

Some of the spin off and remaster stuff has been questionable though.

In fairness to my criticism, the people involved with the FF games I feel are lagging behind will be stuck on FF7 Remake for at least 6 to 8 more years, so this is going to be a prime schedule to have new blood in the series doing actually new things.

Extreme mixed. FF7R was mixed. 14 is very mixed. 16 and Origins starring realistic human guys yet again is just disappointing. Final Fantasy hasn't had an interesting and colourful main cast in the longest time with the most varied being 7R, a remake with the same cast.

No.

I haven't enjoyed a FF game since 12 which was amazing.
13 had a good battle system but hated the entire cast and story. 15 is just awful. Character design, combat, story. VII remake I despise the combat system, hated most of the new combat, despise the new story content, characters and changes. Hated the slow walking and the bloat. Origins trailer was a painful generic looking mess.

I have slim hope for 16 whose art reminds me of Vagrant Story but honestly SquareEnix generally haven't made anything I've truly enjoyed in years. Dragon Quest Builders probably? That was a fun surprise.

FF15 was good.
FF7R was great.
What we've seen of 16 looks very cool.

I'm not a huge fan of FF14.

So yeh, pretty happy.

Overall, probably not.

XIII wasn't great, and I never got around to the sequels.
My interest in XV basically died when it was re-announced and replaced Versus XIII. Not sure what it is, but the game just doesn't look very interesting to me at all. I keep telling myself I'll get around to it but I don't know that I'll ever feel motivated enough to bother.
XVI looks neat, but I'd need to see more.
I still can't play VIIr because it's not on my platform of choice. The demo was okay enough I'd at least try the game.

FF Pixel seems like we might finally get decent looking versions of some of the classic FF games, but SE will probably botch it somehow. Like each game being sold separately for $20.

XIV seems good, but I would rather play a blank screen than an MMO.

Origins is not up my alley at all.

Bravely Default is probably the closest thing to what I want out of FF to come out of SE in recent years.

I'm good with it. XIV is my favourite in the series and very excited for XVI. I have issues with 7R and SoP but I can certainly deal with it. I liked XV more than most.

Fantasian part 1 was also excellent, and it's hard to not consider that a Final Fantasy.

FF VIIR is the best ARPG right now, I hope part 2 takes FF XV(which I also enjoyed despite being brain-dead easy)approach if there is an open world aspect.

Absolutely. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a blast to play through, Final Fantasy XVI looks incredible from what's been shown so far, and Final Fantasy Origin, albeit ugly in terms of it's art direction, already seems to have an incredible battle system if that pre-alpha is anything to go by. Then they're also working on the HD remasters of the classics which is neat, even if the art style isn't to everyone's liking. Honestly just feel like they're doing a great job at covering as many people as possible with the classic remasters, the MMO scene with XIV, and then the new action titles for the action fans.

Mixed. I don't mind some of the action stuff but wish we got an occasional entry or even spinoff that was in more of the classic ATB, turn based, or even FF12 style.

The MMO is a masterpiece and the remake is brilliant, but before I can say that FF as a whole is great again I need a new offline mainline game to be great.

Basically ask me after 16 release.

I really don't think I've ever cared about Final Fantasy less than I do in 2021.

And I'm a person who literally has Final Fantasy carts framed on my wall 😅

Didn't like XV or FF7R and particularly the flashy ARPG direction the series has gone in. Origin looks like utter shite. I'm basically out at this point.

Which is fine, lots of people are very happy with the franchise these days. It's just not for me anymore and I'm ok with that. If I want classic FF style I just have to look elsewhere.

So is FFXIV free? Or do I buy it first and then it's free? Or is it a subscription?

It has an unlimited free trial up to the end of Heavensward which is the first expansion. If you wanted to continue afterwards you'd have to pay a monthly sub. The Base game + Heavensward alone have tons of content though so it should give you enough of an impression to decide whether you'll like it or not.

I refuse to buy a console for one (I guess soon to be two) games so I have yet to play FF7 Remake because of Sony. Going to be really disappointed if they start using 5 hour long DLCs for FF16 as an excuse to keep extending the exclusivity period. It's even more frustrating knowing that they've literally shown the PC versions of the games. I mean the FF16 trailer literally starts saying it was captured on PC. Still, I'm very excited to play them when they eventually release on PC.

FF14 I have almost no interest in the story whatsoever and that's the only real reason to play the game. Origins looks... really bad. Not sure anything else needs to be said about that game so I'm probably going to avoid it. World of Final Fantasy has been on my list for a really long time but haven't gotten around to playing that one yet.

I'm replaying FF7remake, looking forward to the new numbered entry, memes aside…the new FF Origins game plays well, and I'm a daily player of their mobile game, Opera Omnia. Yes, I'm happy where the franchise is at right now.

No. XIII showed me that it was no longer the series I fell in love with. I left the series behind and haven't looked back. Stuff like Stranger in Paradise just reaffirms that they have no idea what they're doing. I know there's stuff like XIV and World of FF which looks kinda nice from afar, but otherwise no.

Like ghostcrew says above, I'm fine with it making people happy. It's just not for me anymore and I'm okay with that.

Sort of? It's hit and miss, and I generally prefer the older entries over the newer ones, like pre-XII. I don't even plan to play Origins because I'm afraid I might get a paper cut from all the edge. The 'not FF' square games like Octopath , Triangle Strategy, Dragon Quest, etc. I've enjoyed a lot more than FF in recent years.

I think Square Enix freshening up the mainline series and trying new things is par for the course for Final Fantasy and I'm cool with it.

I do think they need to step up the way they treat their "remasters" / ports for classic FF titles. Barring exceptions like FFX HD and FFXII Zodiac Age, they're very hodgepodge and nowhere near close to the quality of their ports/emulations of titles like Mana, Star Ocean, and SaGa.

I sincerely expected them to COMPLETELY FUCK UP the FF7 remake.

And they completely nailed it. (so far)
They went above and beyond, in graphics, presentation, music, characterization.

FFXVI looks rough but gameplay and story wise seem solid, and they have time to make it look good.

The series had been a long string of doo doo, for me, starting from ffxii
But it feels like it's finally turning around with viir
Even origin I can see myself enjoying
