Just wondering how "safe" everyone feels at their job. I'm from USA where we got the whole "fire at will" thing going on, but I still feel relatively safe. I don't like to brag but my boss pretty much needs me to train newer employees, and I consistently outperform my colleagues. I make them look like garbage, tbh. I'm the king of this shit. This is my house! Yeaaaaaa! WOOOOT!

...Anyways, what about you guys?

I got an indefinite contract last month, not sure what that means in the US but in the Netherlands that's pretty secure. I started with a fixed-term contract for a year though, but both parties were satisfied so we shook hands and continued with each other. Very happy with it.

Nope I could be replaced at the drop of a hat. A monkey could do my job and I'm constantly stressed and tired thinking about it wondering when the boss is gonna get tired of dealing with me. I try my best.

Man I know that feeling. I used to work at a place like that and it actually did happen to be that I got laid off. No fault of my own, they were going by "seniority" 🙄

It worked out in the end though because they brought me back me as a supervisor lol! I left that job eventually tho.

Yes and no. I'm self employed, so I sure as hell ain't firing myself.
But there's always the chance that work dries up and no clients want anything for a while. I have enough saved to weather that storm, and can make money other ways if needed. But it's still a possibility.
Things have been steady for years, though, and I do overflow work for another lawyer, so that's another steady stream of work.
I'm in a specialized field (video game and board game law), so there aren't a ton of others doing this specific type of work exclusively. That helps me keep the work going.
I sure as fuck don't want to go back to working for someone again.

I am one of maybe 25 experts/specialists in my legal niche in all of Germany, with 16 of the others working for the state governments. so quite safe, I'd assume.

Not really. My data centre might be closing down in the next couple of years so I'm learning some skills to move on.

Combine a lack of worker rights and a persistence of employer-tied health insurance, most Americans are slaves.

I work as a video game translator in Tokyo so its highly unlikely I will be fired unless I conmit a crime or something of that nature.

I work as a programmer, don't have a temporary contract anymore and plenty of protection, so yes. Also they are pretty happy with me.

How big is that field and how regular is the work? I remember wanting to do stuff like that back in law school before I ended up working in something completely different.

On topic, pretty secure. I'm a permenant employee and workers rights in Australia are pretty solid. Even if I did lost this job, there's a surprising amount of job opportunities for public policy officers, so I'd be alright

I broadcast live sport for a living so I'm probably good. But I'm also fortunate enough to know that before I'm 40 I won't have to do real work any more anyway.

Well I've been on two programs that have ended in the call center I work at but they literally keep making new positions up for me because of my work ethic.

Take that as you will.

Pretty safe, even for being in the US. I'm a software engineer so getting another job wouldn't be too hard.

Yes I work for a big company on about half of most other people doing the same job as me are doing and making twice the money those same people are. I'm secure in my job but i reckon i will be classed as a "flight risk" pretty soon and will be pushing for either a hefty raise or a promotion within the next couple of years.

I'm a controller, I work in accounting, there are many people that could be me in my job. Just as easily, I could replace them too. A lot of fluidity in my profession honestly.

I've always felt pretty secure but even if they suddenly decided to make a round of redundancies I'm fairly confident I could get something lined up before my notice was done.

The whole 2 weeks thing in the US always strikes me as really cut-throat. I'm on a month currently and that feels short for the role I am in - at my previous job I was on 3 months notice from the moment I started.

Nope.

Currently a contract worker that works for a company that is also contract based to its employers lol. Pretty tired of it after 4 years. At 30, I want something I know will last a solid 5 years or more for once.

Nope.

I was full time employed in the city (London) for a finance company forrrr 13 years. Ended up burning out, quitting and moving to a much smaller city near the sea.

I now work from home as an outsourced report writer (ÂŁ15 to 25 per hour depending on what it is) for my old company and many others. I choose my hours and do as much or as little as I please. Some weeks I work as little as one or two days, others I work all 5.

I have literally no benefits / job security / pension etc but I really don't care - I love my freedom and honestly can't imagine ever going back to a suited and booted environment.

Brexit does worry me a bit but I'm sure it will be fine!

Obviously the games industry is huge, but most of the bigger players either have in-house counsel or use a bigger firm. As a solo attorney, I just work with small teams and mid-sized companies in video games and board games. That's exactly what I want, though - I don't have the bandwidth to deal with big-time stuff, nor do I want that kind of immediate demand on my time. Since I work remotely from Asia, the time difference would force me to stay up all night, rather than just half the night :)

CDI in France as a web developper. With 10 years of xp, i can find another job in a finger snap if i want. And since i've been in the same company for all that time, firing me would cost them dearly while i could sit on my ass doing nothing for a few months before envisioning finding a new job.

So i'm safe as fuck.

Not really. Amazon could tweak their algorithms tonight and my entire back catalog of books would tank. It's happened before and I lost thousands every day, which is why I've been saving like a madman every month.

I'd love to branch out to other stores but Amazon has a choke-hold on the ebook industry.

Not at all. I work freelance and could theoretically be let go at a moment's notice. But I have about 6 months of savings so I'd probably be fine if something did happen.

Also I'm on good terms with the folk I work for and I feel like they'd give me notice if business was drying up.

I work overnights on the weekends. Literally the shift no one likes. I've never complained once about my spot and I love it. I do well at my job when I have to fill in for anyone else on any other shift. Only way I lose my job is if I don't do it or the company gets bought out.

Against an AI sure. Against another capable project manager....not a snowballs chance in hell. Although my field is somewhat specialized so it's not a job most anyone would have knowledge or experience in so it makes it a bit better.

I work nights at a grocery store as I'm going back to school and literally no one but me and my direct supervisor ever stay; people are constantly hired and never last longer than a week. Unless I horribly fuck up something up I feel like I could do whatever I want and get away with it at this place (plus the pay is okay for the type of work it is), so I'd say I feel pretty secure about it before I go hunting for chemistry work.

I have a job but security? Nope. Every job these days is from period to period, you might or not might get a contract extension. I can't look for a home because I have no idea where I'm at in a couple of months.

Every time I think I'm at a good place I get the same "we don't have the budget for a permanent contract" or " it's budget cuts".

I'm losing a lot of my current responsibilities over the next few months and taking over new ones as I go so I'm in shaky ground atm. Think I'll feel a lot more secure in April or May.

So yes. My consulting firm needs me more than I need them. That's not to say I couldn't get fired, but I'd find a new job within a week.

I finally got a permanent contract and have been there two years so I have some security and rights.
However my job is very prone to automation and general budget cuts, hell the only reason I still have it is they botched the IT system which keeps the calls coming in.

Any redundancy process will take months an luckily there's a genuine effort to place you elsewhere if my job does go, although it may be a crap one. Just depends how many are in the same boat.

Fairly safe, it's a government job and it's union and you need an advanced degree to do it but I graduated undergrad in 2009 so I'll never feel 100% secure in any job I have for as long as I live.

I work in management for a county level parks and rec department. The job is pretty much mine forever if I want it. Pension, amazing health insurance, easy hours, and four weeks of vacation a year. I can't complain.
