Have you seen Rosemary's Baby? Because it looks like it was shot on a sound stage in many parts. There are CW shows that have better sets, yet if I came out and said Arrow is better than Rosemary's Baby because it looks nicer, I should be deservedly ridiculed.
I have. This is true for every aspect of film if you focus on them to the exclusion of every other.

For me, it's high tier but not my favorite. My two favorites are Guardians 2 and Winter Soldier which I think are fantastic movies.

Black Panther is still amazing, though, even if some of the CGI isn't so great.

I thought it was a good movie, amazing villain, and the cast were all great actors/actresses, but its not a movie that I would consider watching multiple times. After the hype about it wore down, it ended up being just a solid marvel movie. I still think Guardians of the Galaxy 1 was the best MCU movie to date.

It's my second favorite probably, but the best will always be Doctor Strange.

BP is great but Thor Ragnarok is everything I want from a comic book movie. So much fun.

For me the movie gets really boring after Killmonger defeats T'Challa. The first half is top tier MCU tho.

It's maybe top 6? ish.

MCU threads are the most hyperbolic shit ever.

It does have the best soundtrack of the MCU though.

Black Panther is easily in the top 15 of MCU movies, but personally my top 5 are:
  1. Avengers: Infinity War
  2. Avengers: Endgame
  3. Spider-Man: Homecoming
  4. Thor: Ragnarok
  5. Spider-Man: Far From Home

The post in this thread actually back up what Martin was complaining about. Talking about the quality of the CGI rather then the content of the film, proves the point he was making where these films serve as theme park rides and not cinema.

It's like watching Rosemary's Baby and complaining about the production design when discussing the quality of the film.

See this is exactly why I don't push back harder on the MCU criticism than I do, considering I'm generally a fan of them and have been buying them all up from redbox quite happily; the third acts almost always eschew theme or meaning in order to reenact the Helm's Deep stuff in the LOTR movies. I swear, GOTG is the only one that has a third act where the meaning is baked into its development rather than in service for spectacle, because the fact that the team organizes themselves and the defense army to actually protect civilians from Ronan's forces specifically contrasts with the way their initial attempts to get the infinity stone for themselves has them all fighting amongst each other and being publicly disruptive (I honestly think that first scene would have been enhanced with a little more property damage), and it's one of the few movies of its kind* where I feel like the action wasn't foremost in service of destruction porn or cool splash panels.

* Star Trek: Into Darkness and Man of Steel were a couple of the previous year's films that I thought were some of the worst offenders and I think the use of the ruin porn in their third acts felt especially deeply at odds with their themes and source material; GOTG was a deeply refreshing palate cleanser after their garbage. For that matter, Dark of the Moon had done the same thing a couple years earlier. Ultimately my point is that it's hardly a unique problem to the MCU, but those other movies aren't as critically or commercially successful -- nor are they coming out of The Big Company That Wants to Own All the Media.

Made a ranking a while back, had to look it up. Placed BP in seventh place, behind (not in order) GotG1&2, CA:TWS, the first Iron Man and the last two Avengers...es. Ahead of Ragnarok, though come to think of it I may prefer that as well. Still a good movie of course, but just below my MCU cutoff point for 'great'.

Infinity War is my favorite, they did a great job of basically making 3 MCU crossover films in one. The pacing in the movie is great too, time just flies by.
Black Pather was pretty good too. Probably in my top 10 though I haven't done any rankings. Looking forward to the sequel.

Top five, definitely.

Number one? Maybe. If it weren't for the action/battle scenes in the third act (not just the CG quality, but how forced they feel), BP would be a lock.

It would have been top 3 for me if not for the terrible CG at the end.

For me the top films would be Ragnarok, The Winter Solider, and IW/Endgame. Far From Home might edge out one of those after another re-watch. The hologram mindfuck and scene where he finally masters his spider-sense are easily two of my favorite scenes in the MCU now.

It really is tough to pick though! Homecoming was also great, and I love both Iron Man 1 and Thor 1 as well.

Nope, it's probably not even in my top 10. I don't find him all that interesting of a character. "Strong guy who can run fast" isn't all that interesting imo.

I think that Black Panther is very good, however I do not consider it to be the best MCU movie. Thor: Ragnarok takes that spot.

No. There are ideological battles that it chooses to tackle that really elevate it, but it isn't the best of those movies.

Yep. I appreciate that it brought some new thematic ground to the MCU, but I found a lot of it flat-out goofy (the looney tunes chase in Korea, the "get stabbed, fall off a cliff, but we packed him in snow so he's fine" business with T'Challa, etc.) and strangely low stakes in a way—they make Black Panther in his suit feel unstoppable, and so every obstacle they throw up feels contrived. Also continues the grand MCU trend of making interesting villains and then killing them off almost immediately.

Leaving aside the dodgy CGI which I understand is just the costs of rushed post, I was let down by the design and look of the film as well—the costumes were great, the production design felt way more generic and slapdash "put Africa in a blender and call it Wakanda" than I had hoped. Something more retro-futuristic like Kirby's designs from the comics or a similar bold choice would have been better. The music, too, felt stuck in a weird middle ground between orchestral and doing something different, and didn't land for me.

I generally have no desire to rewatch any of the marvel movies .... Yet for some reason keep rewatching Thor Ragnarok , it's just so much fun

This. This thread is dripping with whiteness and a complete ignoring/dismissal of what Black Panther was at its essence.

Not enough explosions and mindless action for some.
The third act was filled entirely with punching, punching and more punching.

It's funny how a prominent black pop culture YouTuber said it was a bad movie but we are somehow forced to like it.

No. Like it's fine, and the aesthetic is awesome so there's some really good shit going on, but it's not even in my top five.

2 Winter Soldier
3 Thor Ragnorak

Hell no it's a mediocre movie at best. Winter, civil war , spider 1 and avenger 1,3,4 are all better movies.

I wouldn't put it in the bottom, more the middle of the pack. I was about to write lower part of top 10 but I couldn't even fit all my favorites in the top 10

It is better than iron Man 2 & 3
Thor 1 & 2
Ant-Man 2
Hulk
Captain Marvel though

He seemed different from the character in Civil War, I liked him a lot in that.

The weak third act and special effects hurt it in my eyes.

Best production design for sure. And some great talent at actor.

I enjoyed IM1, Avengers 1 3 4, antman 1, guardians 1, winter, cw more. Probably also thor 3 and guardians 2.

My top 5 Marvel films:

1. Logan
2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse
3. Guardians of the Galaxy
4. Spider-Man 2
5. Thor Ragnarok

Yes I know only two of them are MCU films but those are the only two MCU films that felt unique for me. BP could have been one of those if not for the terrible typical MCU 3rd act.

This is how I feel.

I likely have an unpopular opinion, but Black Panther isn't even in my Top 5.
Same. It would rank somewhere between 6-10 on my favorite Marvel movie list (there's like 3 or 4 I haven't seen). It's a shame too, as Black Panther is one of my absolute favorite superheroes and has been since I was a kid. I was unbelievably excited for this movie and, while I enjoyed it on first watch, the second viewing left me a little cold. It's just too uneven for me. I loved the screentime he had in Civil War and I was one of the people who was MUCH more excited to see him than Spider-Man.

Having said that, I still think Killmonger is the second best villain in the Marvel films, after Thanos.

I cannot wait for the sequel though. Give me more Black Panther. I want to see him as the new "Captain America" style leader of the Avengers.

The most stinking thing about this thread is the nauseus idea that if you don't like it, you're basically white. Speaks volume.

BP has one of the best scripts, and a stellar cast to bring the writing to life.

It is the narrative and style that brings it to the top of the pack, but holy fuck the action is embarrassing. I don't know what the hell happened there, but it prevents BP from being the 5/5 comic flick that it almost is
