Turn me off completely. I have no time in my life for such a long game. And also, there is simply no way a game is that long without some heavy bloating

If it's a story driven game with an astinishing story and a lot of (useful) exploration, then I prefere that it should be as long as it can be. I enjoyed every minuted of The Witcher 3 and was constantly hoping that the journey isn't over yet, even after being 100+ hours in.
Otherwise, I don't even bother to start playing if a game is >20 hours.

They have, and still do excite me. If a game has the content to be that long I'm all for it. For me some the most memorable stories come from the 50-80 hour rpgs I fell in love with in the ps1/Saturn era.

Long games generally excite me unless I can tell right off the bat that they're going to be repetitive grindfests.

I'm all about The Witcher 3's approach to content: A strong throughline of core missions you can follow when you want a focused experience. A vast expanse to explore, with loads of things to discover, so for instance you can decide to spend a day or so collecting the next best armor set or raiding high level areas for good loot. A scattering of meaty sidequests with their own miniature story arcs.

As long as there's plenty of variety and the game isn't too grindy, I'm happy to jump into an 80+ hour adventure.

Depends on the game really. My most anticipated game is Persona 5R and I've already completed P5, we're talking at least 120h here.

But there are some other games (JRPG mostly) where I can't stand it because they're not interesting enough to invest that much time.

Quite rarely excited by really long games. Few exceptions, such as when I am already invested in a series (Yakuza, Arkham, Valkyria, TES, Fallout).

If it's more than 20 hours, I'm not buying it. I don't have the time nor the patience anymore to sit through really long games.

10 hours or fewer please. Make those hours superb.

If it has good, fun and satisfying controls and gameplay (Spider-Man, Bloodborne) I'm down with it. If it plays like a random Rockstar game or The Witcher 3, then 5-10 hours is more then enough.

That's very dependent on how much I enjoy the game, If I love it I'm all for a 100 hour experience, If I don't I just wont finish it no big deal.

Initially it's a turn-off, family life has caused my window of opportunity for gaming to decrease. But once I'm already hooked by a game and if I'm having fun I want to play it forever. Reaching the point where I've done all the shrines in the base game and expansion in Zelda BOTW was saddening, even after 200+ hours. I still have korok seeds to find but that's not as fun as finding and doing shrines.

Likewise, No Man's Sky is rapidly climbing on my best game of all time list, I love the game so much at this point that even after ~400 hours I'm sooo happy that it's a game I'm never going to fully complete. I don't want it to end.

Meanwhile I was sighing out of relief when finishing Shadow of Tomb Raider after 15 or so hours. Done. Don't have to touch it again. Phew.

Edit: added more examples

Complete turn off unless most of it is optional. If I like it I'll do the optional stuff, if not I'll just finish the base stuff in 15 hours.

The hours are not the problem, but it's probably bloated with copy & paste side content at that length, so I'm not buying it

I want to play them, but realistically it's too much nowadays with other commitments. 30 hours would probably be the max with 15-20 being the sweet spot.

Just the idea of playing a campaign longer than 15-20 hours exhausts me more often than not.

That's not to say I wouldn't/don't play games longer than that, but it has to be something REAL special for me to put 60, 80, 100 hours into these days.

From time to time i like a longer game but way too many games are way too long these days.

The FIre Emblem developer saying it took him 80 hours for one house (there're 3 in the game) is nuts. There's getting enough content for your money and then there's being overwhelmed with content.

Depends, last game I played that long was persona 5 and that took me exactly 100 hours.

Just got done with Pokemon Ultra Moon and it needed to be 20 hours less than it was. I'm worried about Sword/Shield as pokemon games are perfect being 20 hour jrpgs.

Sounds thrilling to me in theory, but then I hit the 30ish hour mark and I'm ready to move onto the next game. I hate not finishing a game I start though, so I stick with it.

Genuinly 80-ish hours, for a playthrough with a lot of side quests and messing around, that would be okay. I've played a bunch of great games that were over 200 hours lately, or at least over 150, so I definitely wouldn't mind going down to 80. Or even 50. Long story short, I'll play anything that I find compelling, whether it's short or long. But I would like to play less 200 hour games at this point, at least for a while. Give me a nice 35 hour game.

(Breath of the Wild, Yakuza 0, RDR2, and good ol' Skyrim are all games that took me somewhere between 150 to 250 hours recently)

I rather not play 80h+ because i like up to 20h experiences, and 80h+ normally have shoehorned content on it.
but I played happily Dragon Quest and surprisily against all odds i made 40h on ac odissey.
If is a fighting game then is different.
I have a adult life and duties so is refreshing to finish games and go to another.

Only when the game is playable in small doses and it's easy to jump in after a while, like Monhun. Story-heavy RPGs are too much for me nowadays, I need too much time to figure out basic stuff (where am I? What's the next step?!) if I don't play it regularly.

Too long. A Plague Tale was perfect. Typically I'm good with a game lasting 8-15 hours or so. Lets me cycle through a game every other week or so.

depends on the game, sounds good for a persona game, but every time i am hearing about an open world game developer hyping their game up with map size, game length, etc. i just roll my eyes.

+80 hours is too damn long. 80 hours story in a game means a shit ton of useless bloat.

Yes. Mainly due to life, I only get like 6h total to game a week, on average, so I would rather play more games than just one.

... Unless it really is one I want to play. Currently having a blast swinging about as Spider-Man on PS4, and being an open world, I expect the game to be quite long. I just love superhero open world, what can I say.

I prefer shorter games nowadays. I did have exceptions like Persona 5 or Rune Factory but typically when a game starts to push over 35 hours I really start to feel it.

If a game presented itself as having over 100 hours of gameplay I'd probably hold off.

I still actually play long games, even though it is becoming difficult (and now that in two weeks I am finishing my Master's, it will be even more difficult). The longest games I can play nowadays are Visual Novels because they do not require so much effort and moreover and I am a fast reader. However, it happened in December 2017 that I played 60 hours of Xenoblade 2 in 20 days, I still think it is the only time this happened to me because I loved that game. But, in general, if a game is long but I am appreciating it, I am ok about finishing it in months.

Very few games have 80 hours of playtime worth of your time . Most are padded with dumb stuff like filling bars or collecting stupid shit like it's yours second job. Like no fun at all, you just need to do it, otherwise you won't advance in the game.

Nah, keep my games under 20 hours unless they're very very good

Massive turn off. I like to experience a lot of games so anything over 30 hours is a pass for me. Not to mention having a social life and my other hobbies.

Long games both excite and intimidate me at the same time. I find long RPGs exciting and I love them, but it takes me forever to complete them these days which is the intimidating part.

I have no issues with long games. I actually like them. It is just important that they are fun and engaging. But if they are reaaaaalllyy good (e.g: Xenoblade, BOTW; Final Fantasy games), then I prefer longer games more then short games.

I don't see a big difference between playing a (good!) 80hours game vs. playing 4 x 20hours games. While for the later you can have more variety, both options take the same amount of time and can be the same as fun.

Like, I don't understand the argument when people say that they have no time anymore to play 40hours games, and then they play several little games that summarize a total gaming time of 40hours (a long game doesn't need to be finished in a short time period). But if they just simply have a preference for shorter games, then this is an argument that I can understand.

Turn off usually.
I loved when I was teenager as I was thinking the value was great but today with my job and stuff it's hard to find that amount of time for one game and I still play hours on a regularly daily basis.

But after if it's 80 hours+ that is that good... I won't mind too.
I have more problem with fetch quests and useless content juste to make you grind for you to be *forced" stay actively playing a game that should be done by now.
Persona 5 was the last long game I felt rewarding for being so long.

BotW, 200 hours, no problem!
XC2, 130 hours, easy!
Skyrim, 80 hours, sure
Fallout 4, 55 hours, okay
Persona 5, 40 hours, please save me from this hell hole.

They also turn me off nowadays, it doesn't help that there is so much choice now, to commit yourself to one really long game is difficult. I'd love to play AC Odyssey but I know it's just going to be to overwhelming and require too much time.

Depends on the game. Some games I couldn't BEAR playing more than say 15-20 hours (most open world games, brawlers, etc) and some I can't get enough of (Tactical RPG's, multiplayer games, dungeon crawlers, etc)

Wow this topic really is showing the age range of people here!

I see a lot of people mentioning when they're young (and had free time) the game being lengthy is not a problem, now with less free time people want short games. I think quality is more important than quantity.

Personally, I think depends of the game. I love RPGs and story focused games, so for me if I like the characters and the world, I want more length always.

Depends on the game.

Western RPGs like Pillars of Eternity, Pathfinder Kingmaker etc. are my bread and butter.

Also Etrian Odyssey series can easily give 100+ hours.

On JRPG front Dragon Quest XI S is going to give plenty of hours.

I'm into it, like others have said it depends on the game. Games like Xenoblade, Zelda, Fire Emblem, I can easily play them for 100+ hours.
But if there's a game I happen to have acquired somehow and I'm not sure about. (part of a bundle, free game, gift, etc) I do admit its sometimes a relief to hear it's not very long. Some games are good as an experience but not so fun to relax with.

Huge turn off. I've simply stopped buying such games. I don't have the time or interest to play such a game and those that exceed 80 hours are typically packed with repetitive tasks, less than satisfying level design and mediocre mechanics.

That said, if it's really engaging, I can still get into a longer game but the typical open world experience is not interesting to me at all.

I've never understood the whole "I'm an adult and don't have time anymore" thing... The obvious solution to this for is... I play less games. Which I'm perfectly fine with me because I'm spending less money! And I actually do enjoy these long ass RPGs. They're what I grew up on and what I will always love.
