Recently I've found the concept of getting a pet really bizarre. It's probably because I don't make enough money to live on my own and am still paying for college and whatnot, and also thinking about the amount of money I could have saved if not for college expenses and whatnot. But then, the concept of owning a pet pops up in my head and how much of a waste of money it is when that same money could be used to benefit your life in other, more permanent ways and maybe even the lives of others as well.

Like I work retail and you'll have older people with 2 dogs and 2 cats, or like 4 dogs and buy stupid amounts of dog food and spend god knows what on medical expenses, toys, etc. The standard of living that you could improve for yourself with all that money (speaking from a relatively poor college student's point of view) is RIDICULOUS. I had to consider in my mind that they had so much money they got bored and wanted to take care of an animal for fun.

And before you say "It's not just animal it's a member of the family and I love him/her!" you don't. Well, to be specific, you don't love a pet before you spend substantial time with it. You are adopting/purchasing a pet to fall in love with it. Basically choosing to take care of an animal for 10-15 years until they die and you do something else. Not trying to sound sociopathic or anything, but it's weird to me to have so much money and use it on a pet when you could use that money to invest in your retirement fund, help pay for a relative afford college, pay off student debt, start a new hobby, travel a little bit... stuff like that.

I know people are gonna read the title, not read the OP, an assume I'm an asshole who hates animals and doesn't understand love, so go ahead and think that if you haven't read through the OP, but if you have, I want to know what is the benefit of deciding to get a pet like a dog or cat? Or even a goldfish or some shit?

Because people enjoy having pets? I mean yeah they are lot of work and require some money to maintain. People just want that companionship of a pet.

My cat is a rescue, so I'd rather the sweet dumb creature live with me instead of be dead. Seems to not mind my house too much, nice to lay next too when it's cold. He also kills bugs, so he's pulling his weight around here as far as I'm concerned.

Otherwise I'd be living alone. Having pets is improving my standard of living.

Having a pet is definitely a responsibility. It's a live being. You can't just get one and not be able to take care of it both emotionally and financially.

But people usually get pets as emotional support or something that relates to that.

I've had pets because we've rescued stray, starving kittens/cats that we found on the street and gave them a solid decade and a half of comfort, life, and love.

Having a dog legitimately makes me a happier person. By investing in one I'm not only improving myself, but hopefully making the dog's life pretty good too.

I also disagree with "you don't love a pet before you spend substantial time with it". It sounds weird, but I've loved every dog I've had right off the bat. When you know, you know.

Well you admitted it. You're a poor college student, so it's hard for you think about things like disposable income. Sounds like projection plus Maslow hierarchy of needs here.

Having pets is great. They provide companionship and it helps my gf a lot when I'm away for work. Yes there is a cost (food, litter, toys, medical etc) but it's not about the money once you realise you like having a pet around.

For me I love knowing that no matter if I have a stressful or long day my dog will always be super happy to see me when I get home. I enjoy just hanging out with my dog and not think about work or anything just me and my buddy going for a walk or playing.

when I lived by myself in a new city due to my work, my dog keeping my company was the only thing keeping me sane. It's for companionship OP. I love my dog.

Doing something for others makes many people happy, even if that other is a pet. Caring for an animal, especially an awesome cuddly one like a dog or cat is wonderful. Thank about it again when your finances level out a bit more. It's good that you're being responsible with your money right now, it is terrible when people get animals that they can't really take care of.

I would never own a pet on my own no matter how much money I had. Only have two cats in the house because the wife is a cat person. That is not to say I hate animals or pets, I just don't want to be responsible for any.

I'm not a fan of pets either, but I get why people have them around. My wife has a cat, I tolerate the fur ball.

Edit: what PrimeBeef said as well.

I didn't "buy" my pets, they were all strays I took in, one of them who had a difficult life before then. Your bizarrely unemphatic view of pets as some kind of novelty object is just weird.

My girlfriend grew up with cats when she was young. After she moved out, she didn't have cats for years until she decided to adopt two kittens that luckily turned out to be the right amount of independent and cuddly. They know exactly when she needs someone for company, the calm her and make her generally happier. They're amazing for introverts who might want the presence of a living being but not necessarily all the expectations that come with it.

No? I think most people are going to read your post and just feel that you are at a point in your life where you don't really have any perspective of what it means to have disposable income maybe? If you can't really afford to spend on anything "more" then of course any luxury is going to see like a "waste". But then you're on a videogame forum where people talk about 200-300 dollar collector's editions, microtransactions that can add up to hundreds or thousands of dollars, artbooks that cost 50-100 dollars each, soundtracks that cost 30-50 dollars, and a bunch of other collectibles. These are all hobbies. They add up to a lot of money which is a "waste" and can be spent on other things that improve your quality of life. But often it's not even either or. You can spend money on stuff that improves your life directly, indirectly, and also your hobbies, and still give money to charity and donate time and resources to helping people while working a full time job. That's living a full life. It might be hard to see from where you are now, but some day you'll get there. Pets can be cool.

If you can't comprehend the benefits of having pets you may well be sociopathic. The main issue though is you're mistaken about the cost. It's really not much at all. A cat is vastly superior to a dog of course, and the food and litter aren't expensive at all. A $30 bag of dry food can last months. Add some wet food and treats, plus maybe 1 vet trip per year with a couple of shots (about $80 for that), and a healthy pet probably costs less per month than you going out drinking one time, or buying a new game. Even in the later years with health issues, the expenses for that are a fraction of a human seeing a doctor or specialist.

A better question is why do people have kids? Pets are way less expensive than a kid and less stressful. Having a kid is just kinda selfish like you just wanted another you in the world.

Lots of people spend money on stupid shit, including people who don't have a lot of money. A pet will give you love and companionship, which is more than almost everything else. My pets certainly brought me more happiness than any video game i ever got, and well, you're on a video game forum...
Money doesn't buy happiness, but getting a pet is one of the things you can buy that is the closest to that.

Nailed it.

I've had dogs all my life because i love animals and they aren't expensive at all. I currently own 3 (one just recently passed away) and it's great. Don't buy overpriced food, toys and champion breeds. You're buying dogs wrong. Adopt. IMO people need to adopt more animals than putting more people in this overcrowded world.

We evolved with dogs. They've been our companions for forever. We wouldn't be nearly as advanced as we are without them.

I seriously cannot live without having a dog. My (big) dog is my security system and companion all rolled into one. He's a treasure. And my stupid, old little Doxie is purely company but we love him just the same.

Well, there's a biological imperative, there. Though I assume the desire to take care of pets is related in some fashion.

OP, have you spent money on useless shit like anime or limited edition video games? Honestly, I'd rather have a pet than spend on those things. At least my money would be going towards something that isn't worthless months later. Hobbies are fine but pets are priceless.

Do you buy food you enjoy the taste of or just bare ass slop with enough nutrients to get you through life? You sound fun.

Why do people give birth to children? It's really expensive and honestly a lot of work. A child easily costs you 200.000 in its life time. A pet usually 2.000 - 20.000.

It's not about the money, and its also not about having too much money. We got two pets and I am barely earning 32k a year. Our cats get high quality food (probably more expensive than ours), have plenty of cat furniture and some toys. I'd rather spend less for myself in order to afford my pets.

So why do I do this? Cats did not suddenly came to exist. They exist because humans tamed them and then spread them all over the globe. Leaving them fending for themself, often unfixed and not cared for. Many cats live a short life because they are killed in shelters, by preventable illnesses or because they simply are seen as plague.

Both our cats are coming from regions where cats are regarded to as trash, no life should be seen as such.

No, we aren't bored of money. We just take our responsibility and make sure that at least 2 cats less end up on the street and are cared for. If possible I'd also engage more actively in cat/animal rescue but at the moment this is not an option.
