I'm sorry guys.. but I stand by what I've seen so far. I just got to Mission 2 and went exploring the enviornments. The high quality shaders completely leapfrog any game out to date. There isn't another game that renders with this kind of quality - especially at 60FPS. Here are some more shots I made:

D259AF56E60FB99F7CC0A0FC3191F0006E1C1C82

Take a look at the props (ballons). I've never seen such a realistic shader since TO:1886. Including Metro/RDR2 (all the other PS4 exclusives are pretty old fair by now to even compare)

FAC7DE012D5342A02F1C7951D5AE30AB7F712C0A

Again more props with atmospheric volume smoke and heavy use of AO coupled with the materials = extremely well done graphics engine!

D78EF2B8C512E0A62386D96E2751A39A96DF4D44

Impressive atmosphere here. The textures are very detailed as well as the normal maps from this distance.

810A046C6D1B4E25898F23F123626D1CC41AC28A

Again, very good detail on the grown bricks. I can't find this consistently throughout Metro and RDR2 isn't going to be as sharp as this on PC.

956EE9D1372B3B7FF2D2CB1E526EF83BC007D746

Crazy detail. Show me a single setting in Metro that looks this good.

84103BEC5788160298BEEC103359C5D174FD695A

Best material work ever! Look at how they got the SSS right on the black guy's hand holding the cigarette. Show me any SSS you want that looks that good. His vest is a shiny velvet, his coat has the proper scattered light for fuzzy coat.

This is the kind of quality that I expect moving forward. And at 60FPS? I wonder what other hidden features they have in their RE Engine that can spice up the rendering even more. RTX lighting, perhaps?

Just me or these screenshots are washed out?

I played for about an hour during launch time. I did the prologue and the first level. I got to
the boss from the demo
but by then I was out of time. I got to say this game looks sublime so far. I think those cutscenes are the best I've ever seen in real time. The characters models are fantastic, as are their animations!!! Can't wait to play more tonight!

RE Engine games are pretty washed out at default brightness settings. It's like watching limited color range content on a full range monitor.

If you do the brightness optimizer, you get colors that pop and deep blacks. Same with RE2 and RE7.

It looks OK. Great for 60fps game but shading/lighting complexity is lacking, especially compared to some of the exclusives.

Among 60fps games maybe.
And those cutscenes are bollocks.

In-game it looks pretty good but the environments I've seen are all rather simplistic.

It's okay to like DMC 5's look, but its environments are not on Metro's level. You wanted a "single setting"? I provided several. DMC 5 has no answer for them. Either you didn't play this on a PC maxed out, or you're just truly in the honeymoon phase of a recent release.

The game looks good, really good but the environments does not impress me to justify it being the "best" looking game.

RDR2 maybe. The rest no. Horizon, Spider-Man and God of War aren't running at 4K/60 with that level of fidelity. DMC5 is.

Something like HZD or spidey doing much more world wise than DMC .
Just look at DMC world alone should show what so different about them .
HZD has weather effects and enemies alone would make DMC drop from 60fps if it had something like that in a open world .

Also of course for VFX no PS4 game can match up lol
This is the same guy that say PS4 games have to do everything the best to be call best looking but over looking DMC short comings.

Considering it targets 60 fps on console, the characters, enemies and special effects look really good.

But the environments are meh, both in the technical and the artistic. From what I've played it's all corridors, lots of invisible walls and a rather boring european-like city that has no personality.

Wtf....

That's insane. I thought you were posting photos for a second there. When you really look it's obvious, but those can fool you for a second.

And yeah for some reason, OPs screenshots look completely messed up. Don't skip the brightness sliders, people. They're important.

The RE2 engine is a beast, but as long as it doesn't have RTX support, the crown still has to go to PC Metro Exodus imo.

It's definitely in the conversation. I think graphically it's certainly better looking than RDR2 however when you consider the scale of that game relative to DMC5 it's difficult to pick a clear cut winner. However I think the best looking PS4 exclusives certainly look better than RDR2. In terms of tiers, I'd say;

Tier 1
Detroit; Become Human

Tier 2
Horizon; Zero Dawn
Devil May Cry 5
Uncharted 4
The Order; 1886
God of War
Resident Evil 2

Tier 3
Red Dead Redemption 2
Spider-Man
Gears of War 4
Forza Horizon 4

So skin and cloth shading? Well here it is compared to a PS4 launch game.

It's a gorgeous game and runs at 60fps on the right hardware but it hasn't dethroned any of the previously recognized kings in any quantifiable category that I can see.

I dunno, just rendering indoor environments at a fixed time of day isn't that impressive to me anymore. This, for example, is from a UE4 tech demo made by one guy in 2015:
UnrealParis_03_mini.jpg

Similarly, Assassin's Creed Unity is from 2014 and still has amazing environments

The characters look great, but otherwise it's not even close.

Excellent framerate though.

It's funny how the best part of DMC 5 (the models) is the worst part of Exodus while Exodus has insanely detailed environments (that are basically king currently even above in my opinion RDR2),is also the worst part of DMC5.
Metro Exodus's models are fine?

Even the monsters look great.

And those aren't cut scenes. I'd argue that DMC's models aren't actually all that impressive outside of cut scenes.

characters look amazing but the environment leaves a lot to be desired, very bland design and flat textures everywhere

No, not really.

And I don't like the overall visual style at all honestly. There is such a huge graphical disparity between the character models and the environment that it just looks jarring.

I would have liked a more consistent art style with way better art direction in general which the game is severely lacking in.

agreed, the environment looks really ugly not only graphically but also by design it feels almost like a last gen, it kinda annoys me tbh

I know those aren't cutscenes cause I've played most of the game but in motion the models tend lack animation work that most big AAA games have including DMC 5 and the skin/hair just doesn't look that great. Millers models in particular doesn't look too hot.

I haven't seen those scenes yet because I'm still in Vorda.

There is more to an environment then requiring it to be picturesque. The shaders have to be tight and in Metro, they are just passable.

Outside of a slight adjustment to Brightness, that's how it looks under raytracing.

I'm sorry, but the more you try to convince yourself that DMC 5's environments look better than Metro's, the worst this gets. Not sure what being 'picturesque' has to do with anything. When I look at Metro's world, it is far better looking and more detailed than DMC 5's. They are lacking next to games that do them much better. Shaders and all. "Passable"? That would be DMC's flat (and in some cases, washed out) environments.

Now, character models are great, so you should just appreciate the things it gets right.

Ballons aren't translucent that far away. They have good approximation of light propagation.

GI is like every other game (except Metro RTX). Baked. Reflections are like every other game (except BF5 RTX) - screenspace.

What's your point?

Ugh. That doesnt look realistic at all. Im at the Volga level and think the game looks great with RTX off, but this looks strange.

The characters and facial animations are excellent; the characters are expressive and detailed, and though the lip-sync isn't always there it's got some of my favourite character models around. Nero and Dante both came out looking great, and so did V. Who I'm liking the gameplay of a lot more than I expected!

However, I can't agree with the assessment of it being the king. The environments don't hold up as well as the characters do, and after having just came away from Metro Exodus, which featured some densely detailed environments with excellent fidelity and lighting, DMC5 doesn't really come close. And on top of that, I'm not even sure Metro is the king either.

Capcom should be lauded for what they've produced and how well it runs for how good it looks, they've done a brilliant job on a technical level. But it's not the best looking game around for me. Maybe it is on consoles, but definitely not on PC.
