It's one of those games I've always been interested in but for some reason never purchased.

Amazing. The plot is serviceable, but often too focused on humor than substance. Aside from that, it's one of the most creative RPGs of its genre. The battle system is sublime and the class/skill system leaves so much room for exploration. It has the same BotW feel in that you'll spend the first 20hrs going "if I light this on fire, it does THAT?"

An absolutely wonderful and funny game, and probably one of the best RPGs ever IMO. Though I still haven't gotten the sequel yet (I should really rectify that soon)

One of the best RPGs ever made, though the sequel is even better in every respect. The combat engine is unparalleled.

Highly recommend DOS1/2 to anyone that likes RPGs or turn-based combat in general.

It's worth more than 8 bucks that for sure. I feel like out of those original kickstarter crpgs they are the only ones that really delivered. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time easy. Fun combat with tons of choices and characters to take in.

it's awesome, buy 2 and gift the second one to a friend to do the game coop with you.

One of the best RPGs in existence. The game is an absolute joy to play. And then there's the sequel which is even better.

There's no reason not to play this if you like RPGs.

It starts off relatively slow, but the story towards the end is actually pretty good.

I had to use a guide because Im bad at these kinds of games and getting experience is key, but yeah...after many attempts I finally got it to click and I enjoyed it!

Totally worth it for the combat, thanks God the story isn't central to the experience because it's pretty bad.

Great WRPG. Also on the harder side. You can be very creative with what you can do with your abilities which means you can mess up very creatively too :p Save scum this one. Steal everything in sight.

It's great for the combat and the free-form gameplay. Don't go in expecting a super tight story though. Also, it's crazy long.

Also a good entry point to CRPG-s that are still making their comeback.

It's good and absolutely worth that price.

Play that first and it'll set you up nicely for Divinity 2, which is a massive improvement in just about ever way. Divinity 1 is good, but 2 is a bonafide classic.

The deal of the century if you like traditional RPGs, but with a turn based combat system. Everything you do affects the story and how you are perceived, it seems.

Well it certainly seems fantastic, especially because everywhere I go it seems to have great reception. I'll probably buy it now and get to it after finals week.

I hated it personally. Combat was pretty fun but nothing in the story, dialogue and characters motivated me to continue. Did not help that the game tried to be funny and quirky instead of making a good story and characters. I loved D:OS 2 though. It's cheap enough so I say go for it, you may totally bounce off it like me or really enjoy it.

Combat is really good. The story, I always question if I played a different game but the story in both Divinity game is REALLY lack luster. It's a fun game and at that price you can't go wrong.

It's a good game but Divinity: Original Sin 2 is better in about every way, especially when it comes to writing and characters/storym which to me is where Divinity: OS was weakest.

Divinity: OS2 was just such a great rpg (and it did win RPG GOTY in many publications even) if you have limited time and want the "best" impression into the Divinity series I'd recommend OS2 over the first one, by far.

Just bought it. Was thinking about getting the 2nd one instead, but it seems it will come to the Switch down the road, so I'll wait to get it there.

It's a fantastic game. Definitely get it and play it before the sequel, which is even better to the point that it is kind of hard to go back to the first. Yet you would probably lose something if you didn't enjoy that progression from a great game to an absolutely incredible one.

It is a great game but it's sequel makes it actually feel quite a bit worse with how much that one improves upon it.

It's good but pales compared to the second which takes improves upon it in nearly every way. The first game isn't required to play the 2nd because they don't really connect that much.

For that price GET IT! I always thought it was never going to go down price and got it when they did the enhnced version.
Lots of fun!

And i liked the humour, also present in Dragon Commander (my favourite game from the studio).7
Im actually waiting to get DOS2 becuase people are saying is much more serious. Fuck that.

Gameplay? One of the best around. Witcher 3 remains one of my GOTG, but I always find myself thinking that Divinity 2 is superior.

edit: OH THE FIRST ONE

How often do you get a thread on ERA saying multiple times "One of the best of the genre ever made" lol.

Game is just sublime. I actually think the story is as good as the second one, but with a little more "Discworld" humor on it. Plus I really loved the dual protagonists.

Put just over 100 hours into it a year ago on PS4.(practically a completist OCD play though. Shave half the time for a typical run)

In short, it's good and worth a play.

One of the best compliments I can give it is that the difficulty balance remained solid the entire way. Even having done almost everything, I never felt too OP or that I was just steamrolling and bypassing the combat rules because of my level or gear or whatever. (Hate when RPGs do that.). I was pleasantly shocked that the game pushed me to consider my decisions and respect my enemies up until the end(despite a lot of repeat strategies on my build I guess).

It does have issues related to padding. I practically felt the game could have ended fine at hour 60 at act 2...but surprise! Here's act 3 and another 40 hours of content! Again, some may rush through the plot line and feel differently than my aggressive need to explore and do all quests.

I suppose I have other minor nitpicks, but they aren't worth getting into on a topic like this.

Most of it ( around 80% of the game ) is really really good, when it reaches the end it's obviously a bit rushed and not cared for as much as the earlier parts but it's still a really good and fun RPG, divinity combat is one of the most fun combats I ever tried and it has room for creativity!
The second one is also much better than the already good 1st one.

I really like it for the most part, but the plot doesn't quite straddle the line between serious and whimsical very well. It can be extremely silly at times. It's also incredibly dense starting out with the first city / region, and then the back half of the game feels like combat encounter after combat encounter. It's a great game still, just hard to not immediately think of how the sequel did it all but better.

Is playing the first game necessary if one wants to fully appreciate the story or characters of the sequel, or would a short YouTube recap be sufficient?

There are some callbacks to the first game, but it isn't at all necessary to play the first or even know the story.

Playing the first is advisable because it's fucking good on its own. But the story is barely even relevant to what happens in the sequel (which is set something like 4000 years in the future compared to the the first).
