I took this just as them saying: "Hey, so you're letting us show your tweets, with your names and all, in whatever video we end up making with them."

The language is such that they want to make it clear that any Tweets sent to them using that hashtag can be used in marketing. Nothing entirely unusual about that.

You can already see in their tweets that they are replying to people who didn't tweet at them with this claim. One of their latest replies, for example, is replying to someone who merely mentioned the term "star wars" in their post without tagging disney or anything, with them repeating this line.

They're not claiming ownership they're just warning you that your message and username might be used in promotional material if you use the hashtag. Pretty boilerplate stuff

You don't have exclusive copyright over anything you post on twitter. Disney could always use the text of your tweets in their promotional materials without asking your permission.

That said this is kind of funny regardless.

You mean they're asking them to use their tweet, right?

They are saying that by using the hashtag, you agree to give them permission to use your name and message. That's not the case, people have been using the hashtag since well before these tweets, not everyone who tweets about "may the 4th" will have seen this tweet and agreed, and there are people who will tweet using this hashtag which have claims in their bios saying they don't agree to any commercial use of their twitter content.

This OP and a lot of the replies to that tweet lack reading comprehension.

Sounds like they are letting you know that if you use the tag it's because they want to use it for a montage or something for all the fans out there. Probably because there is no conventions going on atm. So it's to show how much love the Star Wars universe gets.

Claim ownership is funnyOP

"Reply with your favorite #StarWars memory..."

and then in a reply to that:

"By sharing your message with us using #MayThe4th, you agree..."

And then they're messaging other people who are talking about SW on Twitter, asking if they can use their tweets in their media. Pretty standard stuff, and what you would hope a company would do. Not really getting the outrage here.

"By sharing your message with us using #MayThe4th"
This is the very first thing posted in the tweet

No they are saying if you send them a story using that hashtag (like they ask you to) that your name along with your tweet will be allowed for them to use in whatever they way they want as this is clearly just a marketing thing. They're probably just putting together a video celebrating Star Wars. There's nothing here indicating they are claiming ownership of the hashtag at all.

I was at disneyland paris on may 4th last year and they did the same marketing campaign. Disney just projected the photos and tweets inside the park on a big screen.
They have to tweet this for legal matters
