Iger seemed either unaware of some of the drama surrounding EA's recent handling of the Star Wars brand or unconcerned when an analyst asked him for his thoughts on where video games fit into Disney's business moving forward.

"We're obviously mindful of the size of that business," Iger said. "Over the years, as you know, we've tried our hand at self-publishing, we've bought companies, we've sold companies, we've bought developers, we've closed developers. And we've found over the years that we haven't been particularly good at the self-publishing side, but we've been great at the licensing side which obviously doesn't require that much allocation of capital.
"Since we're allocating capital in other directions … we've just decided that the best place for us to be in that space is licensing and not publishing. We've had good relationships with some of those we're licensing to, notably EA and the relationship on the Star Wars properties, and we're probably going to stay on that side of the business and put our capital elsewhere."

Sounds like that Star Wars license isn't going anywhere else...

I'm totally sure Disney is thrilled that in nearly half a decade, EA has put out two middling Star Wars games... Yep, that's exactly what they wanted all along.

Anyway, you don't burn bridges.

Where does it say that they're happy in that quoted text?

If you are pleased with how the Star Wars IP has progressed then more power to you.

Disney could be good at video games, but it seems the people running their businesses never understood gaming.

He's mostly saying that they are not going to develop again. He mentions EA but that is not his focus here.
Of course, until the contract ends, he will say that EA is doing ok. That doesn't mean they will renew it.

Oh boy....

EDIT: Hmm...from what I see they're only talking about how THEY as a company aren't going to develop games anymore.

Disney's issue with gaming was always expecting instant results.
"Oh this has the disney name, so it should be doing a billion dollars like our movies do" when that isn't the case for a lot of their stuff.

It's a shame what they did to Propaganda. They really should've let that continued its course.
If they weren't so quick to drop things, they'd have finally gotten a real feel for game development.

He doesn't really mean sticking with EA, just that he would rather others do the work instead of themselves.

Well they got the "not good" part right at least.

Cannot fathom how anyone would be happy with EA's Star Wars games though.

I look forward for the reactions when Disney renews the Star Wars license with EA.

Did you expect them to publicly trash them? I'd rather hear his thoughts on Kingdom Hearts and its 5mil shipment

This is a PR statement, obviously they're not going to badmouth EA when there's half the contract left and another game coming out this year.

Hmmm... Those were great games!

Regarding to Star Wars... they mess up by not allowing Lucas Art Game Division to stay alive. IMO

The Star Wars franchise is already fucked up, making two high-controversial games focused on loot the players isn't different on what's happening with the franchise since the Lucas days.

5 years and 3 months are nearly a decade? Didnt know that.
HALF a decade. Never rush to be first comment, peeps.

It does seem like Disney isn't saying they're happy with or without EA, just that they don't want to bother doing it themselves anymore when it's more lucrative to license out the IPs instead.

I mean, if Warner can do it I don't see why Disney couldn't. Shame they gave the Star Wars license to one company, and it's EA no less.

Nah....that's code for "thanks for the free check EA". LOL. I'll be shocked if Disney renews their Star Wars license with EA simply because another publisher (Ubisoft is my pick) could do wonders with that license in my opinion.

Good to know that I can continue to expect bad star wars games. Makes it easy not to care when they are announced.

For all the things the battlefront get wrong, they are still some of the best star wars games ever made, especially in terms of control and graphics.

While them being shit at video games is true, I don't believe they are at all happy with Legislators talking about "Star Wars themed casinos" and the like. EA has generated a ton of negative PR, specifically for Star Wars. Not to mention their output has been lack luster.

Also, if you recognize your bad at games, maybe you shouldn't have shut downn Lucas Arts.

In some ways this isn't surprising. Marvel reached out to Sony because of their reputation for putting out incredible single player AAA games.

I don't know why people thought they would drop EA. Disney doesn't care that much.

I don't think anyone actually thinks they will end the current deal with EA. I imagine doing that might be a bit messy legally. I do think that they might reconsider re-uping though. I also wouldn't be surprised if EA doesn't want to re-up. SW as a whole has lost a lot of it's luster.

Toontown, Clubpenguin and Pirates Online were both great for their target audience. What the hell are they going on about?
