Communist views are certainly not my own, but a great game is a great game. Can't wait to play it on console next year.

Not to be that guy but Mayakovsky was a poet, not a painter. I know he sketched but I don't think he ever painted.

Edit: Apparently he studied the works of Burlyuk and applied what he learned to his own art.
It's a russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky btw, Kotaku made a mistake. Vladimir Makovsky did indeed exist and was a painter, but the guy clearly says "Mayakovsky" and it also makes more sense since Mayakovsky was one of the most famous communist poets.
Probably a mistake in the article since they are also giving a shout out to Ilja Repin if I hear correctly

So... is it a Communist game? I haven't played it

Its a very self-deprecating kind for support for socialism. The game seems relentlessly bashes tankie talking points and treats the communist dialogue choices as a your chaotic-neutral "ironically funny" options. But on the other hand, it also bashes the excesses of modern day capitalism, as well as the centrist powers that be.

In the end, I surmise Disco Elysium to be a broadly leftist game, supporting a kind of depsirited libertarian socialism.

They are though. No need to erase their political positions
I'm more talking about automatically linking any positive mention of Marx and Engle to communism. When both their contributions extend much further then just communism. Not necessary the Developers own political position since I don't know much about them.

Marx expressed irritation and disassociation with people using "marxism" as a group ideology. He was just a philosopher. Of course you can be a fan of his philosophy or his creed. Disco is a thoughtful game, I like to think they are just fans of the philosophies of Marx not solely the communist ideology.

comrades.
Also, the reactions in this thread are weird for me - You don't have to be a tankie to like Marx and Engels, all strains of socialism owe them their due, even liberal social democracies. Not to mention their impact in academia.

If you're going to write a game that prominently features communism, it makes sense to have actually read about it.

Unfortunately apparently now if you're a socialist or lefty you're automatically a tankie.

Yep, very baffled by this as well. Fair enough if people want to have a debate about the merits of communism but to label someone alt-right because they dislike it is ridiculous. And this is coming for a once starry eyed fan of communism.

CIA just added them to their list :P

Seriously, it's so strange to see Marx mentioned in the US...and in the gaming industry.

Marx would've despised what happened in the USSR. Marxism has nothing to do with Stalin. You could argue that the welfare states in Europe would've been impossible without the Marxist doctrine. And I think the welfare states in Europe are a great example of societies.

I mean modern day America would have been impossible with doctrine.
Unless you are an Ayn Rand type capitalist you probably are a fan of Marx and his works.

After having played this game I feel like they were saying this in jest. It's extremely rare to hear baltic people talk positive about communism without it being completely drenched in sarcasm.

What shocks me is how many people cheer and profess their love to Marx/Engels on this board, again and again.
Take this from someone who comes from a country that suffered heavily under the ideas of both these assholes through a completely insane hardcore-communist regime.
I feel like only people who never properly learned about the consequences would cheer for this. You're not bad people, just uneducated.

My heart goes out to all the victims of communism. All the people annihilated by genocide. Calling Marx and Engels great might be true in a vacuum, but not after the destruction their legacy brought to the world in such a short time. How about telling the estimated 100 million people killed under communist regimes about how much you love them?

And before anyone thinks to call me a nazi. I am not. It doesn't have to be said that those people are absolute shitstains on human history.
I've always been center-left politically and will always be. I just always expect better from my fellow leftists. And more often than not I get disappointed by the international community.
I'm just happy that my country learned from it's complete history and is fighting hard not to fall into either political extreme ever again.

How can you come from a country that suffered through ML rule and think Marx and Engels were anyone other than figureheads for Stalin etc. to claim legitimacy with

The fact it didn't even win GOTY really shows a deeply-rooted corruption in the gaming industry that must be destroyed

Why is it always western leftists swooning over communism? People who've actually lived through this shit think you're all fucking crazy. It's grass is greener syndrome taken to 11.

Is it a pig in your Avi?

Bricktop...Snatch reference with the pig farm.

But yes, I'm a pig because I don't hero worship a racist and anti-semite whose teachings are partically responsible for the deaths of 100s of millions of people.
How? What do you actually know about Marx's biography?

What do you know? Because I can give you quotes out the ass of him doing his best KKK impersonation or talking about Jews in ways indistinguishable from Hitler. Or how about the irony of having an unpaid maid who he impregnated and pawned on Engels, as to not hurt his reputation?

But hey, by all means celebrate the man because he got a few things right in his philosohy.
Pretty much all philosophers born before 1900 were terrible people

Which is why I don't go around thanking them for being "great people " in acceptance speeches.

You're blaming someone who died in 1883 for what happened in the USSR, and calling people uneducated? Seriously, the Russians betrayed everything Marx stood for.

Because Western leftists don't agree with/want tankie shit?

Most leftists aren't advocating for anything similar to the USSR or China.

Great shoutouts, especially Viktor Tsoi. He's a music legend in Russia, singing against the regime. Most folks know his famous song Gruppa Krovi from GTA IV, check it out it's an 80s classic.

It's weird that you've been on this site for two years and still think these people are joking.

P.S. I hadn't even posted at that point so I knew they weren't talking about me. I was commenting on the idea in general.

the writing and dialogue mechanics in this game are unique and revolutionary. by very far the best writing the medium has ever seen. this game will be remembered for a very long time because I can't imagine we'll get anything that comes close to this in the near future, I doubt even the developers themselves can do it again but of course I hope this is their fallout 2 and their planescape is next.

It's weird that people like you think that anytime someone address a point it must mean they're "triggered". By that same rational my post "triggered" you.

It's just a shallow meta commentary used to try and quickly shut down discussion without having to address the substantive points.

Yeah I was really glad to see they had console ports coming.

I would prefer to play on a PC but probably wouldn't be able to run it.
since 2012 i only have a bad pc and use console for gaming, to build a good gaming pc is much more expensive than a console today (especialy due to the currency of my country), next gen i intend to continue in this strategy

The crazy new world we live in where everything has to be hard left or hard right. I can't believe what I'm reading most of the time. Is nobody in the centre anymore?
You should visit off topic once in a while, it's one or the other over there.

Same as how if you play Blizzard or THQ games, you love China and 8chan
