I just rewatched Skyfall and it confirmed my love of this film. I know Casino Royale gets a lot of love here and everywhere...it's a great film and a wonderful reboot that took the bad taste out of our mouths from the later Brosnan films like Die Another Day. But I still prefer Skyfall over it.

While Casino Royale added a lot of depth to the Bond character and gave a great dynamic between Bond and Vesper, Skyfall has depth all over the place. It explores Bond's childhood, his drug addiction, his relationship with M, and gives great starts to new relationships with Mallory, Eve Moneypenny, and Q (a well done smaller role by Albert Finney as well). It also has a nice ending arc for M with Judi Dench giving a fantastic performance, and I liked the ending with a Bond meets Home Alone stripped down battle where Bond does not have the advantage in technology. Javier Bardem was a great villain, the film looks gorgeous, and the opening song by Adele is one the best Bond songs. Overall, I find the film top notch and it may be my favorite Bond Film.

Which film do you prefer?

Skyfall has pretty amazing cinematography and the mise-en-scene for the first half is incredible, with a wonderful use of color.

The story is kinda shit, though, and the last third of the film kinda throws all the good visuals away. So I would still place CR over it as an overall film, even if the first half of Skyfall looks better than anything in CR.

Casino Royale is perfect. Just the right balance of drama and action with an exotic location which makes it pretty to look at. Better pacing aswell.

Casino Royale is the better film, but I still think Skyfall is the second best Craig film. Deakins on cinematography alone is a huge feather in that movies cap.

what was that thing where multiple directors/writers all went to the same like workshop or whatever so you have TDK where the joker purposefully gets caught and Skyfall Javier purposefully gets caught. hated that part.

I definitely liked Skyfall better. I thought Casino Royale was fine but it didn't really excite me much as a film.

On the other hand Casino Royale had James Bond getting whipped in the balls… hm.

It was nice to look at, but I couldn't stand Skyfall for almost everything else.

I'm not a Bond nut, but Casino Royale will always be to me, just a fantastic film that did more to make Bond a meaningful human being than any other 007 film I can remember.

Couldn't stand Skyfall. The pretty cinematography couldn't make up for the insultingly insipid plot.

That hacking nonsense rivals the infamous NCIS scene. Peak "oh but I intended to get caught" bollocks.

Nope, Casino Royale nailed pretty much everything flawlessly. Skyfall was very good but it wasn't very memorable to me.

I think they all suck except for CR, but out of all those I guess Skyfall sucks the least just because of the cinematography and the somewhat less convoluted plot.

Skyfall is, like others have said, a visual masterpiece, with some very well thought-out scenes. Casino Royale is probably my favorite James Bond film with Daniel Craig though; it's an origins story where Bond develops as a character. Skyfall is still a very great entry though. Quantum of Solace is honestly not bad either IMO.

Skyfall has great cinematography and a decent performance by Bardim. Everything else about it is terrible and falls about with a moments scrutiny. QoS is underrated though.

I haven't watched Casino Royal since it came out, but I had an amazing time watching both it and Skyfall. Conversely, QoS has been one of the worst films I've ever sat through, and Spectre made me fall asleep.

I just watched both of these for the first time. Are these the two best? Kinda sad Casino Royale's sequel supposedly sucked, so I skipped it based on ratings.

Casino Royale is GOAT. The tension of watching poker was more thrilling than I ever expected

I really like Skyfall (Deakins the GOAT) but goddamn that final act was terrible. The last act of CR is also the weakest part of that film but it's not as bad as Skyfall's Home Alone re-enactment.

I like Skyfall, but Casino Royale is a legit great movie that doesn't even need to be a part of the James Bond series. It's just good.

Nah still prefer casino royale over it. But Ive liked all of the Craig movies looking back at it.

Even spectre, albeit a bit boring compared to the rest, had some fire cinematography and locales. Really appreciate how expensive these newer Bond films have looked.

Casino Royal was so good it kind of ruined the franchise to be honest. Every movie since has had a tremendous weight around it's shoulders trying to be "more than just a bond film."

Skyfall is really pretty and kind of dumb, but still significantly better than Spectre and QoS.

I honestly was extremely disappointed with Skyfall when I saw it since it was hyped up so much. Casino Royale is my favorite bond. Vesper is the best bond lady ever.

Skyfall is cheesy Roger Moore Bond with a Daniel Craig skinsuit. Casino Royale is a snoozefest.

Whaaaat? The last third has arguably one of the best single visuals of Deakins' career.

The way they managed the change of light throughout the whole end sequence is astonishing. It gradually and naturally changing from the foggy Scottish day, to the cool blue evening light, to the black of night, to the environment being lit by the orange fire, all during a complex series of action beats mixing interior sets and exterior locations and a helicopter. The sheer balls of managing that change of light gradually throughout the sequence, instead of just cutting to night for the whole thing or something simple, is a Deakins/Mendes pro move.

Skyfall is really good, but fuck, Casino Royale is on a complete different level than every other single 007 movie.

Skyfall is a great time, but Casino Royale is so tightly put together on all fronts. Even the super slow final act is very deliberate and it works amazing.
I truly wish that Quantum had a much better director/cinematographer/editor. I honestly love that story, but that final product is just such a hot mess.

Quantum of Solace had a few moments, but it was completely ruined for me by the villains "And now... I shall triple your water bill. Mwahahahaha".

It's a close call because they're both great, but Casino Royale is just so good so it takes the crown for me. Casino Royale has better performances and more memorable sequences IMO, but Skyfall has better cinematography.

Sounds funny on paper, but with the current Megadrought in the places it got filmed/where the story is supposed to happen, yeah, that's super villian shit
