Was FF7 Remake perfect? No. Was it a masterpiece? No. Was it amazing? Still no, but, despite having some really low points (jfc how many forced slow walks can one game have) the game had some incredible highs that really captured the magic of the original.
Some of my favorite moments:
Honey Bee Inn: Cloud's dance sequence was just...as a queer gamer, I don't think I've ever experienced a moment in gaming so unapologetic in its ally ship for LGBT gamers. What could have been an offensive disaster quite literally moved me to tears. (Almost enough to forgive them for being so cowardly with Fang and Vanille...almost!)
Character writing: Incredible. You really do care for these characters, more so than you have for a cast in years. I think Tifa was exceptionally written. To me, she felt the most real. I think the remorse she experienced was so nuanced. Her relationship with Cloud was also A+. Love isn't a straight path from meeting to someone to falling in love with them, and I'm glad their relationship is complex and confusing and beautiful.
Shinra Building: Of all the locales, this felt the most like my childhood imagination come to life. It felt like an actual office building and not some video game level.
JENOVA: When the fight first started I was like, "Hmm okay well, it's a new game and they took some creative liberties. I can't just expect everything from the old game to come back..." but then when the JENOVA theme finally kicks in during the third phase...NUT!
Edit: Just to be clear, I thought it was a great game and I really enjoy playing it. Final Fantasy is one of my favorite series, always will be :)
