As a Floridian the last few weeks worth of bills being passed feels like 2016-2020 America. I'm glad you all in most of the other 49 states are enjoying your post-Trump life. It's demoralizing for us to see him successfully hurting liberal agenda. And he's about to become all of your problem in a few years.
Yeah I moved to Texas after being in WV, so I sympathize/empathize. Florida definitely seems bad, but this basically goes for all GOP state strongholds across the country. They all seem to be moving in coordinated lock-step in being garbage, though some are more extreme than others, like DeSantis's BS in Florida and the folks here in Texas like Abbott and his lackeys. It really sucks, and I don't know how we really stem the tide in a way that minimizes the damage/risk as much as possible.

I swear peeps were saying that DeSantis was just rabble-rousing and that this would NEVER go through in the original thread

I normally give people shit for needing to be "motivated" or "excited" in order to vote against the coming tide of fascism, but thought of Charlie Crist once again attempting to run for Governor as a Dem is the least exciting thing I can think of. I remember seeing his announcement and going "not this shit again".

As much as I would want him to win it absolutely would not surprise me if he got blown the fuck out. I think Fried at least has a marginally better chance.

Charlie Crist running again is just insane to me. This guy is the biggest loser. He does the most advantageous thing for himself at the time and runs for every office possible. Dude will run for dog catcher when he loses this one.

I used to really enjoy going to South Florida, I don't think I'd dare go down there with what the state gov't is doing. Sucks for the non-crazy people who live there and depend on tourism.

Florida has the worst fucking bench. Charlie Crist again?! And of course DeSantis probably wouldn't be in office in the first place if Dems didn't put up someone under FBI investigation. I'm sure that was worth 0.4% of the vote.

Fuck the panhandle for electing these scumbags in, now and forever.

Can't wait to sell our home in a couple years and never come back. That tax is going to DESTROY people that live paycheck to paycheck and are barely scrapping by. Inflation here in central Florida is awful and by the time it's 2023 when this goes into effect it's going to be even worse.
I'm glad I moved out of Florida (Jacksonville) back in 2012 & back into the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. Things seem to go from bad to worse in that state.

First with Rick Scott, now with this jackass. This will affect my half-sister & my half-brother who lives there.

Someone needs to get this asshole kicked out of Governorship.
Charlie Crist's warmed-over ass isn't going to do it.

Honestly, the only way I see a Dem winning the governor's race in Florida any time soon is the special election that would happen if DeSantis successfully wins a bid for the presidency.

The bill doesn't take effect until June 1, 2023. That date is important, because it's after next year's legislative session - when they will undoubtedly quietly pass legislation to revert this language. I don't give a fuck about Disney keeping their tax breaks, but this is just political chicken. I'd bet my savings on this.

But in the meantime I am guessing/hoping they will take a political hit for this stunt. "Your property taxes are going to increase by 25%" is going to fire up seniors like nothing else.

Still seems like this is a work because the language of the bill doesn't actually dissolve the district until June 2023 and allows it to be reconstituted on the same day. Either way I'm still interested in seeing the public reaction in FL to the growing shift to Authoritarianism.

It's ironic because so many of the conservative Hispanics here claim they can't support the Democrats because of the oppressive Socialist regimes that took over their home countries but they seem to be perfectly OK with oppressive Capitalist regimes.

Among the conservative Hispanics in Florida (everywhere really) there a lot of people who where from privileged families and/or were business owners in right-wing dictatorships, but lost everything when their countries became left-wing ones. Or even just imagined left-wing dictatorships, like in Brazil.

Presumably that talk of property taxes going up 25% in those two counties is just from this alone, and doesn't include the typical annual raise. So maybe 30%-35%?

I had a friend who grew up in Texas and was there when Bush the III was in power. When he got elected president she started crying and said "you have no idea what is about to happen and how bad he is". I feel like I'm going to be doing that in 2 to 6 years.

I feel like we are slowly losing the idea of states flipping. I feel like we are going to firmly set some states as read in some states has blue and that point any other state is going to be considered a swing state.

More like "just ignore the bully" mode. And we should all know how well that goes.

When Dem consults think "Hey, maybe fighting back against charges that we are child groomers and pedos isn't such a bad idea!" is seen in Dem consultant circles as a "break through", then it is little wonder why they don't speak up about this. Dems have a pathological inability to confront GOP bullshit. But curious how they seem to suddenly rediscover that fire in their belly when it comes to keeping the left flank of the party "in line."

So in reality, DumbfuckSantis signing this bill to "punish" Disney is really just giving them a massive tax break, and costing tax payers billions as a result?

Thats... just wow. This moron will literally go down in history as one of the worst govenors in American history... and God, is that saying something.

I don't know what a Disney private government is, but it sounds like Jonestown inside Florida with armed guards wearing Mickey's ears.
Its so they have control over zoning and utilities without the counties interfering. They have their own Fire Department but orange country sheriffs are they're cops

also they could/can issue bonds at a much lower rate than corporate debt.

No. disney would still owe taxes. the tax increase would be because they county can't write it down or something. it now goes on their balance sheets. or something similar

Suddenly I'm seeing how Disney decided this was fine

I've been saying for weeks this looks like it was a golden opportunity for Disney to get from under a mountain of debt and to gain a nice tax break in the process.

It would not surprise me if there was a closed door meeting where DeSantis and Disney colluded to get this done, it's win/win for both sides.

Except Disney would no longer be able to issue bonds that are better than corporate debt.

Forget Disney and don't fall for his redirection tactics. Focus on his redistricting and taking seats away from Dems.

Focus on both. This is about punishing dissent. Folks really need to stop ignoring these moves.

this rhetoric is exceedingly daft. people can focus on multiple things. its not voters but fox who are setting the narrative

Disney is a multi billion dollar corporation. They'll be fine, I can guarantee you that.

Gerrymandering is a much more important focus and much higher on the totem pole. Republicans are far ahead of Dems in this department.

But the repercussions will still be that taxes are going to skyrocket for other counties and just hurt regular citizens, correct? (including some of the very people that voted that idiot in office)

You can argue all you want about whether or not Disney should have had this right, but from that thread linked above-

This is going to HURT the people living in the two counties affected.

They don't have to tax "everyone equally" its based on assessed value. disneys going to be paying the vast majority of that tax increase. the %25 quote is like saying the average American is a millionaire because Bezos and musk fuck up the average

and there's a shit ton of exemptions for homeowers in florida. a hotel tax or sales tax can cover a lot

Is Nikki fried still running? Don't know too much about her but the stuff I've seen makes me think she can bring it to desantis

You don't have to care about Disney to care that this doesn't bode well for the country as a whole if the GOP will continue to go after corporations/companies/citizens that cross them. They are punishing them for Disney "supporting" the LGBTQ+ community.

desantis will win reelection. the dem party is a mess in florida (the different parts of the state don't work together). it took obama to basically take over the state party to actually run a competent statewide campaign

I wish we had someone like Stacey Abrams down here. Just one person people can rally behind and get everyone's shit together. 😞
