It basically means they pay for their own utilities like roads.I don't know what a Disney private government is, but it sounds like Jonestown inside Florida with armed guards wearing Mickey's ears.

Yeah I moved to Texas after being in WV, so I sympathize/empathize. Florida definitely seems bad, but this basically goes for all GOP state strongholds across the country. They all seem to be moving in coordinated lock-step in being garbage, though some are more extreme than others, like DeSantis's BS in Florida and the folks here in Texas like Abbott and his lackeys. It really sucks, and I don't know how we really stem the tide in a way that minimizes the damage/risk as much as possible. As a Floridian the last few weeks worth of bills being passed feels like 2016-2020 America. I'm glad you all in most of the other 49 states are enjoying your post-Trump life. It's demoralizing for us to see him successfully hurting liberal agenda. And he's about to become all of your problem in a few years.
Should be a warning to corporations about the danger of ignoring the rise of fascism from within the GOP.

I swear peeps were saying that DeSantis was just rabble-rousing and that this would NEVER go through in the original thread
I normally give people shit for needing to be "motivated" or "excited" in order to vote against the coming tide of fascism, but thought of Charlie Crist once again attempting to run for Governor as a Dem is the least exciting thing I can think of. I remember seeing his announcement and going "not this shit again".
As much as I would want him to win it absolutely would not surprise me if he got blown the fuck out. I think Fried at least has a marginally better chance.
You can argue all you want about whether or not Disney should have had this right, but from that thread linked above-
This is going to HURT the people living in the two counties affected.
There's a lot of legal battles to go through still. It will still be a loss for Florida at the end of the day I'm sure.I swear peeps were saying that DeSantis was just rabble-rousing and that this would NEVER go through in the original thread
I'm glad I moved out of Florida (Jacksonville) back in 2012 & back into the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. Things seem to go from bad to worse in that state.Fuck the panhandle for electing these scumbags in, now and forever.
Can't wait to sell our home in a couple years and never come back. That tax is going to DESTROY people that live paycheck to paycheck and are barely scrapping by. Inflation here in central Florida is awful and by the time it's 2023 when this goes into effect it's going to be even worse.
Charlie Crist's warmed-over ass isn't going to do it.
When you're signing grandstanding bullshit you know won't every actually be applied it's pretty easy to shit something out. If the Florida GOP really wanted this to stick they'd have spent a lot more time crafting this.
Though sadly, you can't recall a Governor in Florida.Charlie Crist's warmed-over ass isn't going to do it.
Honestly, the only way I see a Dem winning the governor's race in Florida any time soon is the special election that would happen if DeSantis successfully wins a bid for the presidency.
But in the meantime I am guessing/hoping they will take a political hit for this stunt. "Your property taxes are going to increase by 25%" is going to fire up seniors like nothing else. The bill doesn't take effect until June 1, 2023. That date is important, because it's after next year's legislative session - when they will undoubtedly quietly pass legislation to revert this language. I don't give a fuck about Disney keeping their tax breaks, but this is just political chicken. I'd bet my savings on this.
Still seems like this is a work because the language of the bill doesn't actually dissolve the district until June 2023 and allows it to be reconstituted on the same day. Either way I'm still interested in seeing the public reaction in FL to the growing shift to Authoritarianism.
It's ironic because so many of the conservative Hispanics here claim they can't support the Democrats because of the oppressive Socialist regimes that took over their home countries but they seem to be perfectly OK with oppressive Capitalist regimes.
Putting anything past the GOP is foolish.I swear peeps were saying that DeSantis was just rabble-rousing and that this would NEVER go through in the original thread
They're full on "don't feed trolls" mode I guess
ding ding
More like "just ignore the bully" mode. And we should all know how well that goes.

Its so they have control over zoning and utilities without the counties interfering. They have their own Fire Department but orange country sheriffs are they're copsI don't know what a Disney private government is, but it sounds like Jonestown inside Florida with armed guards wearing Mickey's ears.
Walt wanted this at some point I think, but instead we get what we gotI don't know what a Disney private government is, but it sounds like Jonestown inside Florida with armed guards wearing Mickey's ears.
No. disney would still owe taxes. the tax increase would be because they county can't write it down or something. it now goes on their balance sheets. or something similarSo in reality, DumbfuckSantis signing this bill to "punish" Disney is really just giving them a massive tax break, and costing tax payers billions as a result?
Thats... just wow. This moron will literally go down in history as one of the worst govenors in American history... and God, is that saying something.
this rhetoric is exceedingly daft. people can focus on multiple things. its not voters but fox who are setting the narrativeForget Disney and don't fall for his redirection tactics. Focus on his redistricting and taking seats away from Dems.
I've been saying for weeks this looks like it was a golden opportunity for Disney to get from under a mountain of debt and to gain a nice tax break in the process.
It would not surprise me if there was a closed door meeting where DeSantis and Disney colluded to get this done, it's win/win for both sides.
Forget Disney and don't fall for his redirection tactics. Focus on his redistricting and taking seats away from Dems.

Disney is a multi billion dollar corporation. They'll be fine, I can guarantee you that.Focus on both. This is about punishing dissent. Folks really need to stop ignoring these moves.

this isn't about disney, its about the state punishing speech it doesn't like. expecially since the bill already punishes gay families from mentioning their spouse/partner/etc.Disney is a multi billion dollar corporation. They'll be fine, I can guarantee you that.
Excuse me, but as a resident of Orange County something like this is equally as important. This is not a mere "distraction", this can be absolutely devastating to thousands of people/households in CFL.Forget Disney and don't fall for his redirection tactics. Focus on his redistricting and taking seats away from Dems.
desantis will win reelection. the dem party is a mess in florida (the different parts of the state don't work together). it took obama to basically take over the state party to actually run a competent statewide campaignIs Nikki fried still running? Don't know too much about her but the stuff I've seen makes me think she can bring it to desantis
But the county's have to vote on this right? It's in the states constitution correct? You don't have to care about Disney to care that this doesn't bode well for the country as a whole if the GOP will continue to go after corporations/companies/citizens that cross them.
Vote about what? This repeal as a referendum? But the county's have to vote on this right? It's in the states constitution correct?
I wish we had someone like Stacey Abrams down here. Just one person people can rally behind and get everyone's shit together. 😞desantis will win reelection. the dem party is a mess in florida (the different parts of the state don't work together). it took obama to basically take over the state party to actually run a competent statewide campaign
