Democrats Drop Demand To End Fossil Fuel Subsidies From Party Platform

Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris each ran on axing subsidies, but the party said including that in the final draft of the platform was an "error."

The Democratic National Committee this week quietly dropped language calling for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and tax breaks from its party platform, HuffPost has learned.

On July 27, officials added an amendment to the Manager's Mark, a ledger of party demands voted on as one omnibus package, stating: "Democrats support eliminating tax breaks and subsidies for fossil fuels, and will fight to defend and extend tax incentives for energy efficiency and clean energy."
The amendment was approved. But the statement ― which reflects pledges presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, each made on the campaign trail ― disappeared from the final draft of the party platform circulated Monday.
I don't really have any additional commentary.

The good news is that the Democrats have shown themselves to be responsive to public sentiment, so organize and contact your representation and make your feelings known.

Most people will say they care about Climate Change. When it comes time to take meaningful action, such as raising the price of gas, everyone becomes pro-Petro.

Yes.

It is also worth pointing out that an end to subsidies remains a part of the Biden platform, so the focus needs to be on members of Congress who are holdouts.

.@JoeBiden continues to be committed to ending U.S. fossil fuel subsidies & then rallying the rest of the world to do the same—as was outlined in his climate plan last year. Here at home, he'll use those dollars to instead invest in a clean energy future and create union jobs.

Stef Feldman is Biden's campaign policy director.

People (in general, not you) should really stop talking about not hurting or destroying the climate.... It always gets me when hear that.... i wonder just how many people actually and fully realize that they are NOT destroying the climate, they are just changing it to the point that they THEMSELVES can no longer live in it, thus they are fucking themselves (and their descendants) up. Always wonder how many people would still keep going if they fully knew just how much they're shooting themselves in the foot, but then humans always were kinda like lemmings in a way so....

I mean, the only tangible political goal and vision is to go back to the utopia that was 2008 (the best and biggest we are allowed to dream) so of course subsidizing big oil all while exclaiming climate (not industry or oil) as an existential threat is going to be the tenet for pragmatic radical liberal democratic dreams.

They can remove it, whatever. The platform has never really mattered at the end of the day. Its what Biden says/does that matters, and if he's still committed then good. We can just keep the pressure on him to deliver once the country is no longer careening off the fascism cliff.

What is Perez doing, why create this unnecessary confusion between your organization and your nominee.
One explanation could be that it gives cover to more moderate Dems, like the Manchins and Conor Lambs of the party. But tbh I cannot imagine the portion of voters who: a) read the party platform, and b) hold it against their specific electeds is very big to begin with.

Our future status quo president. Horay

Climate change means nothing to them

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris both oppose fossil fuel subsidies, and have for years. They both support adding this to the platform. C'mon, take a few more minutes to present the issue factually instead if trying to rush to get a hot take in about our "future status quo president."

Joe Biden & Kamala Harris support:
  • Ending US fossil fuel subsidies
  • Ending fossil fuel export subsidies (e.g., subsidizing other countries to buy our fossil fuels)
  • Calling on all G20 nations to end fossil fuel subsidies within their own countries
  • Providing subsidies for businesses that switch from fossil fuels to green energy

People really have to stop confusing the DNC for the democratic party.

Kind of feel like this topic was made to cause outrage from certain people who are always looking for something to be outraged about.

I know legalizing marijuana is not in the platform, but has Biden himself said anything on this?

Don't worry they're just doing this to get Republicans to vote for them and then they will completely change everything up after and betray the people whose votes they chased after!

Party platforms are crafted to run competitive elections in all 50 states and arent really representative of what Biden wants or will happen under a president Biden.

I recall someody in the other theead about this saying that the DNC platform is meant to be a guideline bare minimum for any DNC candidate regarding policy. Loosening this rule allows the Manchin-types a degree more freedom to appeal to voters in the middle. At face value I think it's natural to find it gross, but I'm not sure it's going to meaningfully change the overall direction or speed we are moving in. It might help get a few more blue asses in seats; moderate ones perhaps, but that's better than the alternative across the aisle.

Our climate system is in a vicious cycle at this point. Things they are supporting are not by all mean enough. We aren't doing enough things to slow down the icecap melting in Northern Atlantic Ocean. Once the thermohaline circulation is messed up, the climate changes we are seeing will speed up way quicker since the ocean is no longer able to buffer our anthropogenic pollution.

Iirc Biden said before he would work with the fossil fuel industries to find a solution together. It is those companies' fault that we are in this huge mess.

This needs to be repeated. The same confusion happened in 2016 as well

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is the governing body of the United States Democratic Party. It organizes the Democratic National Convention held every four years to nominate a candidate for President of the United States and to formulate the party platform. While it provides support for party candidates, it does not have direct authority over elected officials.

Their job is to essentially formulate a strategy for tackling the election. Their platform isn't necessarily that of the Democratic Party or candidates/officials apart of it
