For months, the Vermont senator was written off by Democratic Party insiders as a candidate with a committed but narrow base who was too far left to win the primary. Elizabeth Warren had skyrocketed in the polls and seemed to be leaving him behind in the race to be progressive voters' standard-bearer in 2020.

But in the past few weeks, something has changed. In private conversations and on social media, Democratic officials, political operatives and pundits are reconsidering Sanders' chances.
"I believe people should take him very seriously. He has a very good shot of winning Iowa, a very good shot of winning New Hampshire, and other than Joe Biden, the best shot of winning Nevada," said Dan Pfeiffer, who served as an adviser to former President Barack Obama. "He could build a real head of steam heading into South Carolina and Super Tuesday."
The durability of Sanders' candidacy has come as a surprise even in some states where he performed strongly in 2016 and where he is attempting to improve his standing ahead of the 2020 election.

California state Sen. Scott Wiener, who defeated a Sanders-backed Democrat for his seat in the liberal-heavy San Francisco area in 2016, said Sanders has been "more resilient than I anticipated."

"But in retrospect," he added, "he has a very, very loyal following, and people have really stuck with him."
The same day on MSNBC, national political correspondent Steve Kornacki said, "Democratic voters like him, and if he starts winning, there could be a bandwagon effect." GOP pollster Frank Luntz, who conducted a California focus group that found most participants thought Sanders had won the debate, said on CNBC, "I think you're going to see continued movement. Sanders has been gaining in California over the past two months."

It's a interesting development to see. Who knows what the horse race will look like when primaries start in 2 months.

I thought his heart issue was the end of his campaign.

Bernie 2020 y'all.

Biden is still the favorite, but Sanders is probably the second likeliest to win the nomination at this point. A while ago I would have said it was Warren.

Warren has been my #1 pick but if Sanders is more viable by Super Tuesday, he's got my vote.

I thought his heart issue was the end of his campaign.

Bernie 2020 y'all.
I mean, it's a genuine concern. Dude had a heart attack and his campaign lied about it.

Like Biden though, any issues I'd have with his age could be quelled by a strong VP choice. (Please, for the love of God, not Tulsi)

He could win the nomination. I would certainly rather vote for Bernie than Biden.

He is going to win this time.

And after this article, you can already see some of the mainstream outlets giving him legitimate front-runner coverage.

whats the point of this thread if when he loses, you'll blame the "establishment" anyway as the sole reason why he lost

If those dorks gave full support, they could beat Trump with Bernie at the helm easily.

Easily? No. Sadly.

You can't win an election purely on the support on the base of your party - you need the base as well as the centrists in the electorate. Bernie will have just as hard a time winning over centrist voters as Trump will as long as the pervasive fear of socialist policies is a thing in the US.

Trump could very likely win the next election purely based on a "Bernie is a commie" message. Bernie isn't a communist but a lot of Americans are stupid enough to believe it and vote Trump because "at least he's a real American" or some nonsense like that.

if you want Trump gone, your best hope is a centrist.

Pre-setting up excuses for if he loses?

"Well it wasn't socialism that lost! He only lost cus the ESTABLISHMENT didn't support him hard enough!"

(I do this Sanders has a good chance to win. I just hate the excuses people always use.)

i'd rather the ship go down with bernie at the helm than having it go down with biden and never knowing what could have been if bernie or warren got nominated.

here we go, the comparisons to bernie and trump supporters already on page 1
Nope, not comparing Bernie supporters to Trump. Comparing YOU to Trump.

Again with the disingenuous, intentionally deceptive, borderline lie of a post.

I didn't realize you were Bernie supporter Jesus and that any criticism of you counts as criticism of ALL his supporters.

It is still far too early to make a prediction, as history has shown. Warren is positioned just as a well as Bernie to make inroads against Biden and win the nomination.

I've come around Sanders. Policy largely doesnt matter in the general election anyway. The base left will come out no matter who you nominate. ight as well get the guy that excites people.

Only worry for him is that he lacks support with blacks except the young ones. You can't win the nomination without their support amd you risk your own chances if you ignore them in the general election.

Centrism got you Trump.

Was Hillary very centric? Wasn't it pretty mich established she lost due to a combination of arrogance and gerrymandering from Republican governors?

Trump won because enough people in the middle wanted "something new" even though it clearly was a bad choice.

Case in point: In December 2003, John Kerry was tied for third place at 8% with Joe Lieberman and behind Dick Gephardt and Howard Dean in a national ABC poll.

Swing voters thought Trump was closer to the center than Clinton.

She would have won but for the Comey letter.

Swing voters are idiots that can't be relied upon, ever. Hillary was the definition of the centrist status quo. What people thought about her emails has little to do with the assertion that more centrism is the answer to Trump. It's not.

Eh, still a long way until the voting starts.

But I think there's a reasonable argument that if Sanders loses vs. Trump it's very likely Biden (or Buttigieg or Warren) would have as well, and I'd rather have Sanders lead the charge than the others. Can still stomach plenty of other candidates still in, though; I'm not a buster.

I don't need to set anything up. The Democrats and their media friends are not helping themselves against conspiracy theories with all these manipulative Bernie erasure charts on TV.

If there's toxic infighting after he loses the primary, blame them for stoking the flames with the nonsense. Pin Bernie cleanly.

Can I call you Trump for shouting fake news without backing it up?
I need evidence that the poster intentionally lied about what the person he was quoting said?

The poster said: "whats the point of this thread if when he loses, you'll blame the "establishment" anyway as the sole reason why he lost"

Which isn't even CLOSE to saying: "so the establishment isn't complicit at all, good to know"

The poster was 100% being disingenuous and manipulative. Full stop. No argument.
