I love that there is slightly above average and high scores from major review outlets; this means message.
Like grumpy (Ron Gilbert) says, it's easier to make something everybody loves; show a puppy playing with bubbles, congratulations you've shown the world puppies are cute.
So having some love and some meh makes me think it will be worth it because it has probably a message to convey.
There's always a risk for me to land on the meh side; but that's a risk i'm willing to take. I don't want to read the reviews i don't want to be spoiled too much :P

A lot of the complaints are "all the story is extremely terrible and manages to explain nothing in a dozen plus hours of cutscenes of exposition"

Not sure that will convey a message.

Death Stranding is a game that focuses on the journey rather than the goal. If you are looking for a different and unique adventure, you should try Death Stranding.

LevelUp 8.5

Power Unlimited 9/10

A hiking simulation you'll want to keep playing because of the unique stealth experience, a social element and a crazy but epic story that grips its claws into your mind. Not for everyone, but once you get sucked in, you'll get the experiences of the year. Yes, in plural

Post Arcade (National Post) 9/10

3DJuegos 9/10

GamePro Germany 8.9

Meristation 8/10

Yeah I'll pass for now. Would love to pick this game up at a large discount some day, just to experience it. But reading some of the reviews I don't think it's for me so not worth risking full price.
The better reviewers manage to describe the game very well without having to pay much attention to ratings. Enjoyed the Eurogamer review in particular.

IGN said that the majority of the story missions are glorified fetch quests that would be found as side quests in other games....

The dude has a crazy fanboy following in the world of gaming. Some of these reviews can't seem to review it objectively for that reason. That's the way I'm seeing it. A game shouldn't be getting a 9 when you say a good portion of it doesn't work.
You see this argument doesn't really work since on the opposite side you have people who straight up hate the guy. Kojima has just as much detractors as he does fanboys.

Even when it's not Kojima this argument doesn't work. There are lovers and haters of literally anything.

Divisive is more of a comment on the spread of the scores, not the average -- even if the average is weighted. At least that's how I've always thought of it.

You can't just look at the MC number and determine "divisive" or not. Gotta look at the spread. Let's get some boxplots up in here. Or at least a sigma value.

A game that gets 100 8/10s is less divisive than a game that gets 100 varied reviews that average to 80.

Agreed.

I pretty much have to play this game now. God dammit. This all sounds weirdly appealing in a way I'm not sure if I'll like, but I really want to find out.

That's funny. I would think it's going to be one of those niche hidden gems that people who finish speak super highly of.

It could go that way, but from the reviews I've seen so far the presentation seems to smooth over the gameplay, and once that is no longer bleeding edge the gameplay will have to do more of the heavy lifting

I need to play the game myself before I can properly form my opinion, so my original post was based purely off the reviews I have read so far

Why are people using an average to argue that something is not divisive? lol

We have reviews calling it GOTY, others are saying its one of the worst games they have ever played. its getting 3's and 10's.

Of course its divisive, that doesnt have to be a bad thing. Why are you so upset over this?

Yeah seems many people don't really understand that.

I was being halfway tongue-in-cheek because of their reputation. I meant no offense. lol

Being enamoured with one game doesn't invalidate the assumption that a group of veteran game journos may be excited to rip into a game hyped to hell and back, even if justified.

Pretty tame observation. Sorry if it rubbed GB fans the wrong way.

Don't go to the GB thread. They'll eat you alive lol.

Told you, team 84 here, I've been right on money when it comes to MC score this year. This is a skill I tell you

The Beastcast convo is a good listen. Vinny and Alex completed in 50-60 hours. Getting a good sense of the things they liked while also fully understanding why they think parts of it are baffling and obnoxious.

Still not sure if this is for me but it def sounds like it marches to its own drum, so kudos for trying something different

I'm a bit miffed at how people can watch that gameplay and be overly excited. It's fetch quest after fetch quest, made harder by the fact that you need to manage your cargo with weight distribution. That doesn't even sound tedious. It just sounds boring.
I've never played a game like that in my entire life. I'm excited to try.

All I get is that America hates it cause no shooty bang bang often. Being serious and not trolling.

shooty shooty bang bang is a mechanically engaing and satisfying way to interact with the game
if there is no shooty shooty bang bang, that's fine, but there needs to be something in place for it thats equally engaging

some reviewers found that the traversal mechanics are not good enough to make up for the lack of it

The weight management + item degradation + being at the mercy of random physics/events (e.g rain) sounds like Breath of the Wild on steroids.

Anyone who wrote that game off because of breaking weapons is going to have a definite roadblock here, it sounds like.

Having low scores is okay. What I find ridiculous is some people accusing the high scores of being some sort of bias just because of Kojima's name. lol

People expected a game by an increasingly divisive developer about a postal delivery man to be in the 90s? Really?
I mean, there's literally a poll at the top of this very page with scores in the 90s clocking in at over 37%, so...yes?

And about 70% of people expecting a higher aggregate score than it's currently showing at the moment.

To me, this is a game you crack open on a rainy weekend and play casually, taking in the weird world Kojima has built.

...just not day 1.
