I actually come out on the other side of this - I think it's better to hitch onto a subscription service which is new and is going to get tons of promotion (and comparisons to other popular services) vs. Showtime which seems to be... fairly flat? I can't think of a lot of recent Showtime shows that have really penetrated the mainstream. Maybe I'm wrong but I see it as a high risk/high reward move. We'll see!
Another way to look at it, it seems that the parent company Viacom seems to be thinking of Showtime as their 'prestige' content, according to the article. Getting a bump from that channel to the mainstream Paramount Plus channel could be a vote of confidence for it - not the opposite. I guess we'll see.

Yikes, and this is certainly going to be weekly dripfed and not dropped all at once to retain trial subs. I'd be lying if I said I won't be looking for alternative viewing methods.

Feels like a lifetime ago this was announced. And wasn't (is still?) Spielberg involved at one point? Probably just exec producer.

I'd love a decent halo TV series.

People are being way too negative about Paramount+. They announced a lot of good things today.
That's what I thought. I was surprised at how much of the lineup I scrolled through (due to the Halo tweet) that I'm interested in. The fact that March Madness is going to be on there is reason enough to get $30 from me for the full year. I guess We'll see in March 2022 if I keep it.

He seems to still be exec producer.

He is still an executive producer and his company Amblin is one of the producers.

Matt Reeves did leave the series after he was announced to direct the entire season though.

CBS All Access has been around for years and Paramount+ is that plus a ton of Viacom content; I can't see why it would be less appealing now.

The studios are all (well, besides Sony) going all-in on owned streaming platforms now.

Probably just referring to the relatively small audience it's likely to have.

I can't believe the Halo show that's been talked about since I was in middle school is finally this close to release.

I didn't know about any of this, and I feel like I'm pretty connected.

There's a Halo TV show actually going forward? Showtime has a streaming service? Paramount has a streaming service?!?
Showtime's streaming service is essentially just Showtime, equivalent to HBO Go/Now before Max rolled out. Paramount+ is an impending relaunch of CBS AllAccess now that CBS and Viacom have reunited. Showtime is also part of that same company, as a division of the pre-merger CBS.

I wonder who's bankrolling this? I will wait for reviews but I don't think I'll be watching, that was my opinion from the outset. I assume however that the TV network thinks it's worth doing, Microsoft aren't just paying for a show to be put on a TV channel.

"UPDATED: The showrunner of the "Halo" series at Paramount Plus will exit the show once work on Season 1 is over, Variety has learned exclusively.

Steven Kane and Kyle Killen were both attached as co-showrunners on the series at one time. According to sources, Killen departed the project ahead of the start of production as he felt he was unable to render full-time showrunner duties during the show's shoot in Budapest. Kane then took over as the lead showrunner.
Production is currently ongoing on Season 1 of the series, with Kane set to remain onboard through the post-production process. Should the show get picked up for a second season, however, he will not return. Kane has been in Budapest now for the past two years and wishes to return stateside for personal reasons.
A second season pickup seems likely for the series, given the high-profile nature of the underlying IP and the high level of investment on ViacomCBS' part.

Killen was first announced as being attached to the show when it was originally ordered at Showtime in June 2018. Kane came onboard to co-develop and co-showrun in March 2019."

Honestly, aside from Star Trek: Lower Decks, none of Paramount's scifi shows have retained the showrunners from the first season, so this is par for the course.

I wouldn't be surprised if the first season is pretty janky, but it really depends on what storyline they try to do.

Mystery box stuff has the biggest chance to turn into a dumpster fire.

I wonder if there have been any major changes since this started. I still very much dislike the human shipmaster thing.

Sending it to die.

I don't think Paramount+ is long for this world.

People said this about CBS All Access in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Each year, it gained further traction. Now, with the rebrand, it has substantially more content and is continuing to see growth.

It's not the sort of growth that is exponential, perhaps -- in other words, there's no doubt the execs want more -- but at "worst" it will merge with someone else and keep going. Regardless, the service isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Heh, yeah.

Also, now that the studios have a direct channel to sell their content directly to viewers, I have a really hard time thinking they're going to decide "actually, we'd like to go back to having a middleman and making less money."

Paramount+ is sticking around. Peacock is sticking around, though they might change the name to Universal+ or something. HBO Max is sticking around – they're all here to stay for the same reason Disney+ is here to stay. Disney's not going to go "actually, let's stop doing our own service and put Pirates on Netflix and be at the mercy of their recommendation engine" when they have a way to have a direct connection with their viewers and control that relationship on their own platform.
