Crazy that it took a 22+ film saga and 10 + years to beat a film with zero sequels or predecessors.

The real metric is concession sales. How many hotdogs were sold!!!!!!
You think James Cameron can manage to get a re-release out within the next year or two.
He takes a lot of time to do things.
That had a a fancy new gimmick that inflated ticket costs.
In the end the far better movie is now on top.
Makes Avatar that much more impressive since it's an original IP and to make as much money as it did is still unbelievable.

Bone gets the win on this. No one thought Endgame would be crawling past Avatar to beat it, everyone thought it was s sure thing that would be done in a month or two.

You are right, not all of them inflated the ticket cost. Ultimately I don't care though.
Well if we're gonna play that game, neither Avatar or Avengers are number 1.
It ultimately doesn't matter, but I liked that the two highest grossing films of all times were by the same director in wildly different genres as original movies, but oh well.
