You know what? I'm gonna give it a chance. I've only really tried Enter the Gungeon, so maybe I just need to find the right game for me.

Dead Cells is a solid recommendation from me. It's one of those games that just feels good to play. Everything about it is incredibly smooth and fluid, from movement to combat to UI.

I don't think you can go wrong with Dead Cells if the videos are at all interesting. It really is a joy to play, even if it can be challenging.

So good luck and have fun!

Dead Cells is a pretty good game held back by it's choice to be a rougelike in my opinion. Having to restart from the very beginning is not fun. Having to fight bosses again is not fun. One day I'll beat it but it will take a while.

This almost feels like a different game on Switch docked. Even if it's only trying for 60fps this style of game benefits from the responsiveness.

Dead Cells spoiled me when it comes to metriodvania. I moved onto Shovel Knight and it's so much stiffer in comparison. The fast past fluidity or DC can't be matched.

Honestly, the procedural generation is light. All the levels have certain focuses, and certain modular themes recur throughout. There are surprise Elite bosses and various layouts, but once you have run a stage a few times, it feels familiar and you are able to know what generally lies ahead.

It's a good balance of level knowledge vs wild cards.

Edit: And the controls/combat are so goddamn satisfying that they are worth the price of entry alone.

It doesn't particularly feel as it's procedurally generated, the scenarios are well done, have secrets, good variety and they all have their own identity. The procedural part doesn't make them all the same.

Performance on Switch in docked mode is much better, especially in Stilt Village. It's not really locked 60 fps (just fought two Elite mobs in Clocktower with lots of fire and projectiles from my weapons and I think the game was sub-15 fps), but instances where it really tanks are rare and normal traversal now is 60 fps. The game being quite a bit easier on 0-cell mode is also a welcome change.

I don't know what to say dude. It's one of my favorite Switch games from the day it released. Its performance has never been a problem for me in any way which affected me to play the game, including beating it on 0-Cell and getting close on 1-Cell - and no, its performance has never been the reason why I failed a run.

They made a bunch of smaller performance improvements in the weeks after release before 1.1, so maybe those are what prevented me from experiencing any issues? Either way, Dead Cells was my favorite Switch game in 2018.
I'll agree here, never had an issue with performance.

I'll see if I come back to check out this patch.

I'd like some other reports of this, because there's only a few people complaining about this. I'm worried about being crazy.

What do you mean? It got worse?

Yes, definitely worse now. My main issue with the performance before the patch was that there were these weird hickups, where the game would just skip ahead half a second or so. These are now gone, but now, if there are many particle effects on screen, you get constant frameskipping. It's real bad, as the game makes excessive use of particles. I changed the poison skill for my weapon just so the framerate wouldn't drop when I used it.

Overall performance in handheld mode is a lot better, but yeah there does seem to be a bug with some effects like poison which drag things down to be worse than they were before the patch. :-(
It definitely seems worse overall to me. The second area is really bad. I assumed I'd notice it feeling a lot better instantly, but it's pretty damn terrible now, I think because possibly the frame rate range swings more wildly?
Funny that the patch was touted as a big performance boost when it seems to be the opposite.

Not really a fair comparison. Shovel Knight isn't a metroidvania, and isn't trying to do the same things. It's basically a new Mega Man + Ducktales.
Love both.

I was not going to buy it just yet because of my huge backlog but I was decided to buy it asap. Not anymore since I'll want to play handheld most often. Sad

You should, it runs amazing handheld. The only real issues is if you use a poison item, and like people say the cloud drags the framrate down. So just don't use any poison items until they patch it.

I see I'm not alone with the handheld woes. I smoked a little weed last night, and settled into bed SO excited to boot this back up. Then when I got to the second area, things just went downhill.

Performance is noticeably much worse in handheld mode now, and I HATE that an ugly update label with "pimp my run" has been slapped across the otherwise beautiful title screen. What was the dev thinking... =(

The handheld performance thing is weird, on my system it's massively improved. I got the furthest I've ever gotten last night after putting the game down for months, it plays really well for me now.

  • The 5th money blueprint is now available ingame. Version 1.1.3
Is this in the console one? How do you get it? It wasn't showing up for me like the previous money blueprints.
You have to find the blueprint - I got it in the Ancient Sewers, not sure if it pops anywhere else. You need a skill that you get upon beating the game for the first time to reach it.

I read that there was an issue about the game crashing that seemed related to old runs prior to the update and that the problem disappeared when starting everything anew.

Could it be the same for the performance issues? Maybe for people starting everything from scratch everything runs better? Wish that's the case so I can buy the game.

Looks like they just updated the PC versions with 2 new bosses, 10 new weapons, dozens of skins, a 5bc difficulty and and 2 new biomes

  • You'll now get access to the Cavern level after you beat the game for the first time. Look for this place inside the Graveyard... This whole new level is filled with nasty traps, perilous lava pools and violent new enemies. New ways to die!
  • Community suggestion Custom Mode will be now unlocked after few runs (no need to beat the final boss anymore).
    Custom options were adjusted accordingly.
  • A new boss has arrived. Right after the Cavern, you will have access to this epic battle, so be prepared!
  • A new shiny Skinning system was added to the game, giving you access to more than 50 new character outfits.
You can unlock by paying for amazing loot boxes in our new Premium Shop using your credit c... Oh wait. No no no. We don't do that anymore.
They will just drop as classic blueprints from existing enemies (in higher difficulty modes) and bosses. You might also find a few ones in specific hidden area of the game. You can customize your outfits in the Flask Room.
  • 10 new enemies types were added to the world! Some will wait for you in the Cavern or the hidden level, but many were also added to Hard / Very hard / Expert / Nightmare modes, for your sadistic pleasure. They will gladly bury your face into the ground, burn you to death and slice all your useful organs.
  • 3 new skills, including a flying pet and a single-use scroll that will reveal the current level map.
  • 10 new weapons, including the Giant Killer, the Boï Axe or the Thunder shield, for your violent needs.
  • A new Specialist shop replaces the old Hunter Grenade door in Prisoners' Quarters. It's still unlocked the classic way through the Collector shop. You can buy a Hunter Grenade, a Map or a nice shinny skin there.
  • A new complete hidden level was added for very advanced and skilled players to explore (did someone say Boss-Cells 5?). Unveil a whole new ending to your story by beating the crap out of the mysterious big bad guy that awaits for you there... Yes. There is an hidden boss fight too.
  • A new cursed gem might now drop from enemies that will grant tons of gold, but also curse you.
  • [Custom Game] Added an option to let the fountain always available in BC 1 and + (but will lock achievements)
Balancing
  • Community suggestion Dash shield velocity no longer reduced when hitting breakable props
  • Community suggestion NutCracker no longer removes stun/root/frost when it deals a critical hit.
  • Blueprints dropped by the Hand of the King will now be unlocked immediately, as you pick them (there's no Collector shop behind him).
  • Decoy explosion now creates multiple small bombs.
  • Hero pets should now attack invisible enemies if their invisibility is temporarily suspended.
  • The Purulent Zombie in graveyard now has a whole new gameplay.
  • The Purulent Zombie in sewers now has a whole new gameplay.
Level design
  • New lore elements were added all around the world.
  • Community suggestion Toxic Sewers now have 2 cursed chests instead of 1 at BC4.
  • Community suggestion The exit to Ancient Sewers in PrisonDepths is now right before Ossuary exit.
  • 2 new keys were added to Prison Depths: they will give access to a scroll (the one that used to be in this level) and extra rewards.
  • New special rewards (including cells, gold and items) were added at the end of the Ancient Sewers. You'll need to find specific keys to get these rewards.
  • Community suggestion Fixed dead-ends without teleporters in Ancient Sewers.
  • Community suggestion Removed many useless empty corridors in Ancient Sewers.
Graphics & UI
  • Minor polish in the Ossuary and the Sewer Depths
  • Community suggestion Camera follow speed slightly increased
  • Community suggestion Invisible mobs now appear with more clearly when their invisibility is suspended (ie. when you hit them). Their HP bar will also be visible.
  • Improved legendary forge locked message (more precise)
  • The Ossuary Entrance hab been pimped !
  • Added a new cool Hand of the King death cinematic.
Bug fixes
  • [Custom Game] Fixed fixed seed (no more lore rooms will spawn if you enable it).
  • Community suggestion Hero worms should no longer attack doors.

Well I can safely say I'll never see that.

Docked mode on Switch is great now.

Could not stand the stuttering/drops before but now it is quite smooth 60fps most of the time. When it drops it is not as low or as long - it does not affect the gameplay/controls like before

Have not noticed an issue with anything special. Where are the poison clouds? Could be i never seen one.. (only played 5-6 levels over and over)
I don't exactly know because I don't own the game yet, I am interested in it but I'm a bit weary of the performance issues people mention here. Basically people estate that handheld mode is worse than before when using poison cloud weapons.

Poison clouds don't seem to affect performance when docked. This game is fantastic in docked mode. If you're going to be playing mainly in handheld mode, the game still needs a bit of technical work.

The game runs MUCH better than before all the time, except when there are toxic clouds. When these are present, docked is still great, but handheld performance goes to shit. It's that effect specifically, and only in handheld. Motion Twin confirmed via Twitter they're aware and working on a fix btw
