Yeah and even then, you have movies like TROS that will hit a billy, but not come close to projections.

I know WB is happy as fuck with Joker. $1.06 billion... I'm sure Todd Phillips gets to make whatever he wants at WB now.
You guys make it seem WB is pocketing all of that. WB split the measly $64m production budget with BRON Studios and Village Roadshow, because they thought Phillips couldn't deliver an R rated movie and therefore wanted to minimize risks. They even tried to dissuade Phillips from making the movie by giving it such a small budget that he might turn it down. WB's incompetence at management level is staggering.

How so? I don't think anybody in their position would trust Philips like you're expecting them to. I get that shitting on WB is fun and the popular thing to do because hurr durr dumb executives but come on. Philips approached them for a solo movie about the freaking Joker, and a new version of him (and not the one they had already established) at that.

WB wanted to cast Leonardo DiCaprio as the Joker.

I don't think any of these are necessarily bad things
I don't think the Joker needed a bigger budget... and it's not like they didn't get an outside the box pick for Joker anyhow.

Leo and Phoenix are both stellar actors, who don't typically do genre-films.

Ana de Armas needs to be Poison Ivy. Do it, DCEU!

What the hell could have possibly gone wrong on her audition for Selina I wonder

People keep saying this as if Todd didn't literally ask to make a fucking R-rated Joker movie a few months after BvS and Suicide Squad - two movies that just got fucked in the ass by critics.

WB/DC's image is still dealing with the fallout of those two movies (and MoS, but those two movies coming six months apart were the big blow). "Dark, gritty, unfunny, unfun, taking themselves too seriously uncomiclike, not for kids.' All that shit was still happening, so imagine that happening and then getting a request to do a fucking JOKER movie (after they just revealed an immensely unpopular version of that same character). Why would they say yes?

Ana de Armas would be an incredible Poison Ivy! Her and Margot on screen with Pattinson is the stuff of dreams.

Speaking of, I really hope we get that trailer today.

Oh... The only song I know from them is Raining Blood. Fun fact, my friend was working at Neversoft back when Guitar Hero 3 was being made there and he insisted that 'Raining Blood' be included into the sound track all because of an inside joke between our group of friends during college.
Wasn't that their first GH? Harmonix developed the first two I think.

Funny, I never played GH3. Was burnt out by then.

Amplitude is still my favorite game from them.

Well he said, "a different version of Flashpoint", so it'll be a time travel/merge the earths movie without all the cameos, lol.

A version of Flashpoint
Were there any scripts based on the event or was it just the title? He doesn't confirm anything so the "DCEU is rebooting" is odd. Like they could do it without acknowledging any outside characters lol

I want a Leto vs Phoenix face off. Then for it to be 100% ignored on sequel to Academy Award Winner Joker 2.

Since I had some spare time today I thought I'd dig into Black Adam a little bit. I want to stress that I haven't spoken to anyone working on the film but I have some informed speculation that might shine some light on the project and what it could turn out like.

I was speaking to someone in the industry over Xmas and they were talking about the state of 'star vehicles' under the current studio system, one such star was Dwayne Johnson. This person said that they had heard Johnson and his team were no longer looking for projects that featured him as the solo protagonist and were instead looking for more 'ensemble' films. The reason being that audiences preferred Dwayne Johnson as the leader of a gang (Hobbs and Shaw & Jumanji for example) rather than a 'man on a solo mission' (more recently Rampage and Skyscraper, both of which disappointed) and that's how the studios see him working best in future.

Showing this strategy in action he has Jungle Cruise coming up where he's partnered with Emily Blunt, among others, and then Red Notice on Netflix with Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. With this in mind I think that Black Adam will in fact be a stealth Justice Society film. Black Adam will have Johnson as the (titular) protagonist but it will be more of an action/adventure ensemble closer in tone to Hobbs & Shaw rather than something like Man Of Steel.

If I had to guess a (very, very rough) structure could for Black Adam be something like --

ACT 1- Black Adam's origins set in the past. We see how he got his powers. Something happens to him and he becomes frozen or entombed somewhere...

ACT 2- He awakens to find himself in the current day. Seeing him as a threat the Justice Society are dispatched to stop him. Black Adam battles the JS team.

ACT 3 - Black Adam and Justice Society realise that they have a common enemy and must team up to stop the true antagonist. Black Adam joins (??) the JS.

Just as people were erroneously suggesting that The Batman was going to be set in the nineties I don't see Black Adam being set entirely in ancient Egypt (or wherever) as WB will want this to be a four quadrant film that appeals to 12 year olds . It's also worth noting that a rumoured storyline for an earlier Suicide Squad 2 script saw an entombed Black Adam being treated as a WMD esque device that had to be retrieved. it's entirely possible that this 'entombing' still forms part of the Black Adam script though not Gunn's Suicide Squad film.

Establishing the Justice Society opens up the DCU even more in terms of characters and storylines. With Shazam already under Dwayne Johnson's production company's belt Black Adam will be the next step in their plans to create a slate of DCU films that will form their own corner of the DCU. Even Johnson's manager and co-producer says that they are 'starting' with Black Adam...

-- suggesting that they are viewing this as more than a franchise/trilogy unto itself. As has already been rumoured this move could see HAWKMAN and DR FATE potentially spun-off in their own films, which Dwayne Johnson and Co would of course produce, if they prove popular with audiences. All in all if Black Adam is a huge hit and they successfully launch these characters and the Justice Society as a whole it could prove very lucrative for all concerned.

With that said I also don't think that this proposed 'Black Adam vs Shazam' storyline will play out the way some think it will. I don't think Warners are positioning Black Adam and Shazam to headline a 'versus' film having already learned their lessons from BvS. I'm not saying that won't be a storyline that will play but i don't see Dwayne Johnson battling a much of kids (albeit as adults) anytime soon.

When Johnson announced the date of the Black Adam film on Twitter the official accounts of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman all sent Tweets welcoming him into the DCU and that, to me, speaks volumes about how the studio intends to position Black Adam within the DCU. I think Black Adam (and the JS alongside Shazam) will become a cornerstone of the DCU within their own silo similar to how Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn has become the figurehead for the Suicide Squad franchise.

Screen Rant: Do you think we'll see Black Adam fight Shazam in that film, or is that later on down the line?

Dwayne Johnson: Without giving too much away, it's not in the plans right now. I think the approach that we're talking I feel really good about, and all of the filmmakers do too as well. It's an origin story and that's where we start it and we root it, and then we build out from there. Now, not to say Shazam isn't on my radar. Of course Shazam is, but so is all of DC.
https://screenrant.com/black-adam-movie-jsa-justice-society-dceu/

Also, and apologies if this has been revealed already and I missed it, I heard that Matt Tolmach (former Sony executive and co-producer on both Venom and Jumanji films) will board Black Adam as co-producer with Johnson's Seven Bucks. Not sure this informs us about the possible direction of the project but, if true, it is interesting especially since Black Adam is taking the Xmas spot that a Jumanji 3 could have possibly had.

This person also made a great point about WB and how they will now ramp up production of DC films. I said that they are releasing three films in 2021 and they said no, they are releasing three films in six months which is true. June for The Batman all the way to December for Black Adam. It's entirely possible that WB release as many as four films (for varying genres with the DCU) annually if 2021 works out.

As always, we shall see.

Thanks Bus-tee. Great read. I'm very excited for what's coming, especially Black Adam and Batman. Dwayne really seems to know what they're talking about.

And I think WB is realizing what they have on their hands. DC should be printing money for them if utilized correctly. It sounds like they want to make mini franchises out oftheir charcters while letting creatives have their freedom. They can build these franchises and interconnect them later down the line. It's a smart play.

Oh, and if a flavor of Flashpoint comes out, it could explain the change with Batman. Not right away, but when they want to throw everyone on screen again, it's there.

Multiple sites now have Birds of Prey's runtime at 1 hour 48 minutes. If true, this will be the shortest DCEU film by 15 minutes (Suicide Squad at 2 hours 3 minutes, and excluding Justice League due to its 2-hour mandate). For comparison, this is the same runtime as Deadpool.

The movie is basically titled Birds of Prey ft Harley Quinn. Almost every bit of marketing would make you think it's Harley Quinn ft the Birds of Prey.

Exactly, I'm curious to see whether the studio try and get some name actors in to play Hawkman etc or if they'll do what Snyder did with Jason Momoa (who was really only known for season one of GOT before BvS) for Aquaman and cast an 'up and comer' using the role to make them a star and possible anchor of their own franchise.

If they're starting shooting in the summer then I dare say we'll start to hear some names being thrown about in the next month or two.

Allow me to sound hopeful but I feel like WB founds it's footing with the DC Universe.

The BoP feels just... Right. It's not trying hard, but it's hitting all notes.

Can't wait for B-man

Great write-up Bus-TEE !

WB may now realize how much success they can find in using DC to build multiple franchises, as opposed to a singular shared universe.

Batman has been his own brand for years, they can surely do the same with WW, Harley, and Rock's Black Adam.

Statham for Hawkman.
