DC Comics' tweet:

Some choice replies:

There's more. If DC announces the next Superman film is in fact a Calvin Ellis/Val Zod story I'm not sure I'm mentally prepared for the heavily racist undertones from 'fans' of Superman (but not those Supermen).

Show me the real Superman if old.

Something about using Snyder's Supes to go all "not MY Superman" just makes those people an extra level of dipshit

I love the people pointing to Snyder Superman and saying "That's Superman."

That's like seeing someone tweeting that Idris Elba is Bond or whatever and responding "That's not Bond. David Niven is Bond."

Well I can't wait to see them melt down. They're of no consequence to me if I don't read Twitter threads for obviously volatile subjects.

stop giving these mouth breathers an iota of attention.

Fuck it, next Superman movie is going to be a Calvin Ellis and Val-Zod team up. Do it out of spite!

If they really go with Calvin Ellis, I'm gonna watch the film 17 times over just to spite these bigots

I love people that point to Cavil Superman and say that he was THE Superman. I'm super pumped for Calvin Ellis because he is also Superman. An alternate thread title could be "People not understanding Superman complain about Superman" and it would apply.

How many replies are like this?

Because the examples you picked up have between 2 and 44 likes, which is incredibly anecdotal

Calvin's the most boring choice they could make for a movie featuring a black Superman.

Give me a black Clark growing up in a white Kansas or give me Val-Zod

Their heads would all explode if they realized Superman is the ultimate illegal immigrant.

Huh there is a new Superman? And racist people are mad because he is black? They never fail to amaze me

Nice, for me I don't really like Superman but I always give new takes on characters a chance because it gives fresh viewes to an story already told so many times

He's an alternate reality version of Superman, making their arguments all the more stupid.

He's been around since 2009. Not a replacement, just an alternate dimension thing. There are just recent rumblings that he may get his own movie.

Ah in that way.. Lol but yeah what you say that makes it even more stupid because comics go litterly in different directions (that is what makes them so great imo)

Kind of interested in reading this maybe.. Not many times I saw a different take on the (imo rather bland) Superman

Billfisto Ah I see.. Thanks for clarifying, hope the movie happens it's been a while since I have seen a good Superman movie.. Maybe a new direction will help it

Calvin Ellis is such a cool character, easily my favorite of all of Grant Morrison's multiversity counterparts. I'm still hoping the new Superman movie being discussed is a take on him, with DC's push towards being more open to AU variations of their characters.

Grant Morrison alone has written multiple distinct versions of Superman that still manage to hit at the idealization of what the character is supposed to be. Anyone arguing any fictional character *must* be written or appear in one specific way is a moron.

Honestly, the best option for this would have been Icon, but a different rant for a different time. I love some Calvin Ellis, but I love Icon more.
Man. No offense to your tastes, but fuck Icon's black Republican ass.

I know the point is to have Rocket conttasting him and calling him on shit, but the last thing I want on screen representing black superheroics is that "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" mf'er.

Off topic, but looking at those pages again reminds me of that early Obama-era optimism that is very odd in retrospect. We definitely didn't know what the future of US politics was going to look like back then.

I don't know too much about Superman comics so I've never heard of Calvin Ellis. Black president who is secretly Superman? Sounds really interesting. I'd watch the movie for sure. Might even look in to the comics.

Fair enough. I never read the whole run but everything I read never really beat you over the head with his conservative values. I'm also fairly sure they might change his characterization for the new Milestone stuff coming out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought people generally liked the Calvin Ellis character when he appeared in Action Comics #9 and Final Crisis #7? I mean, his character is a combination of modern multi-cultural sensibilities with Silver-Age-style innocence, and felt like a cool multiverse version on the Man of Steel. So I don't see what the probl...

...I wished I didn't read those comments.

Honestly, the best option for this would have been Icon, but a different rant for a different time. I love some Calvin Ellis, but I love Icon more.

It was a surprise that Icon appeared in Young Justice, as I thought we would get more Dakotaverse characters appearing in movies and TV shows, but (as far as I'm aware) those plans were halted.

It wouldn't surprise me they will update/revise Icon's characterization if they bring back the Dakotaverse in the future.

I've never heard of this Superman (I don't read comics or really keep up with them until they hit TV/Film), but I love that his name is CALvin ELLis. That's very neat

Snyder's Superman is so far away from the actual character he might as well be in another universe.

A thread about replies to a tweet might be anectodal by nature, especially given the tweet was only published 37 minutes ago. That there is more than one such response is troubling to me and the thread shows a whole string of them. Apart from that this isn't even a confirmation/Calvin Ellis movie announcement. I'm not looking forward to that mess if it happens.

EDIT: I can't read.

I get the point you're trying to make but I shan't allow anyone to besmirch David Niven's name. He was legitimately fantastic in Casino Royale. 😤
