So.....

Is it actually finished or did they just give up and slap a 1.0 on it?

I feel like this is more so just them trying to become relevant again. I havent heard of any significant updates to it in forever.

I'd be surprised if this regained even a fraction of the popularity it once had, that ship sailed like 3 years ago.

Playing the mod years ago with friends was a really special experience. Unfortunately I don't see myself going back. Congrats for them on the official launch.

Did it actually hit a major milestone for 1.0? Or I wonder if the devs just called it "good enough" finally.

A few months ago they did in fact release an experimental branch that was basically a complete overhaul of the entire game, as a preview of 1.0.

It still looks like shit on stream, running around huge empty maps with nothing going on, still no zombies in a zombie game.

I've heard positive things about the new big update in the preview branch I'll give it a try, I have 120 or so hours from years ago so hopefully it's a decent improvement.

I feel the same. When the mod hit I played almost every day for a year with a clan of 20 people. It was probably the peak of online gaming for me

Raiding people's bases
Server hopping to get good loot
Abusing all the bugs to spawn top tier gear by duplicating items

Those were the days. PUBG/Fortnight is the new DayZ now. BR games took everything people loved about DayZ and condensed it into bite sized chunks

This is part of their problem. When it first came out years ago, everyone was hopping into it. I feel like now the game has fallen back into the same niche that Arma2/3 are in now. Great games for people who love the ultra realistic simulator, but the majority of the people want something thats simpler and easier to play back to back matches in.

This. They really missed the chance of making it into something big before battle royal stole DayZ's dinner. I mean PUBG is a straight up clone of DayZ when it comes to gameplay and visuals.
They just need to spread the word about DayZ again and how it's a slower paced, survival PUBG type of game... after all even ARK still attracts a huge audience nowadays despite being one of those "survival" games.
