This game really surprised me, as I didn't think it would be good at all. And this is from someone who got too bored of Darksiders II to finish it and never played the first.

But this was a really good game, much better than the metacritic score would make you think. It didn't even seem like that low budget to me either, graphics, voice acting, cutscenes were also pretty damned good. Not close to HZD level obviously but far better production values than dreck like Just Cause 4 or legitimately good games like Nier Automata that had bland, empty, sterile visuals.

Good news in the same day we heard Activision say they had record profits but it wasnt enough.

Bring on Darksiders 4, let Strife shine and theeeeen in Darksiders 5 we can play with all 4 of them!

I was really worried about Darksiders 3 sales. Great to basically hear we'll get Darksiders 4, too. The Switch version should be good for sale numbers, too.

Still a bit mad at reviews for this game.

Well I'll be! I swore this had bomb written all over it. Glad it wasn't.

Now please design a main character next time with your hands instead of your feet, THQ!

Happy to hear this. I've still not finished it but it was solid and I enjoyed what I played more than Darksiders 2. Hopefully 4 gets a little more time in the oven as my main issue with 3 was technical issues.

This series has been in my backlog since forever. Played a bit of the first game and I liked it. But I'm happy such a troubled development of a relatively niche IP, materialized as a full-priced release in a crowded window with hit and miss critics reception still managed to break even and meet the internal expectations. It seems like the correct way of handling AA experiences: not go overboard on the marketing so you can also keep lower sale estimates in order to recoup costs. It's great that some studios and publishers can still manage to do this, it's harder and harder when the triple-A productions look and feel this good and offer giant immersive open worlds and whatnot.

I'm happy to hear this. I really enjoyed the game from start to finish on PC - bought it day one. I'll take AA games like this over tripple-A GAAS shit any day of the week.

It's good to hear success can be found making games like this. It's obviously not the kind of success big publishers are looking at because it doesn't make all the money to keep their shareholders happy. But that's why I don't buy EA/Activision games anymore and spend my money on games like Darksiders III instead.

Amazing what proper budgeting and planning can do. Still, the game could've used more time in the oven.

Awesome to hear this, the game is great and I was a bit worried it would not sell. THQ Nordic on a roll.

Expected? The game reviewed poorly, was released in a very competitive time frame and had little to no marketing. I am happy for them, but I would not call these news "expected".
I mean they said they would be happy with 100k which it did on pc alone so anybody paying attention to that would say it's expected. Also think ppl think everything has to sell millions

Indeed. We also knew before launch that the budget was smaller than the first game, which probably wasn't a super high budget even on last gen standards.
There are no real surprises here.

100% expected, as they said the number of copies they would be fine with before the game released. And they outdid that in one week on PC alone.

Guess that based on the sales of Darksiders 3 that 4 will only be about Strife with an AA budget and that Darksiders 5 will be the big final game of this story act with an AAA budget

I get the impression THQ Nordic are going to be the ones to bring AA gaming back to the masses in a big way. They're sensibilities are in the right place, they have realistic sales predictions and budgets that align with them. Their games may not be graphical powerhouses, but they clearly scratch an itch that the AAA and indie space aren't willing or able to. Roll on Biomutant!

What's the state of the base PS4 version these days?

I know they added in the more classic Darksiders style combat but how is the game now for performance and bugs?

Was holding off as I didn't like darksouls combat style originally offered in the game, but finally playing this now after they released the new 'Classic' combat style update and really enjoying it as much as the first game!

Love the gameplay, bosses and upgrade system. I really hope developers make more AA grade style games like this.

They deserve to be commended for the way they listened to feedback and made changes so quickly after launch. It was nice to see.

Yeah, the game looked super budget so as long as their expectations were reasonable it wouldn't have been a problem. Good for them.

DS3 wasn't perfect, but it was a fun ride. Cool ending and can't wait for part 4. Strife looks like he'll be a badass to play as.

Just hope they, for some reason, give him a sword, to make him more DMC's Dante-like and continue the trend of shamelessly copying a well-known formula.

Zelda, Diablo, Dark Souls, DMC.

Don't get me wrong. Darksiders 1 is actually the most fun I've ever had with any game.

Oh good. The game was such a blast to play. Hope to see all four horsemen in Darksiders 5 one day.

The problem with this approach to development is that audiences will give you a lot of shit over your games feeling "cheap", and your chances of getting really high review scores is slim. However, it's the development model that allows small teams to make good games and those small teams to stay healthily employed long term.

Very happy to hear this as I've been a fan since the original, haven't been able to play it yet even though I brought day one.
Hopefully they can build a solid AA market as I'm happy to support single player games with a more reasonable budget.

But Era said because of its

*Checks notes*

Bad reviews that it'll flop and kill the franchise

And era's usually right about these things I mean, Geoff Keighley posts here

I noticed there hasn't been a price drop on the game either. That's a sign of good sales, I'd guess.

Good to hear, I actually still really want to pick this up. Anyone know if the console versions (PS4 Pro specifically) have been patched to run better or at least crash less?

Great news! Granted, I played after many patches but I loved it. Fury was incredible and the dialogue in cutscenes was some of the best in the series.
