Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

Found this rando who kinda looks like TJ Miller and he sells BDs. I never bought the BD player from the other guy outside the flea market (sweet dreams?)

Am I supposed to take this back to Judy's rig or did I miss a separate opportunity to have a portable BD player? Wait. I don't have one in my apartment do I? Lol.
So for the Sweet Dreams one in particular, you have to pay the guy to use his player for that specific BD.

Photo Mode has made me realise 3rd Person could have worked well.

XpHp0hZ.jpg

Of course it could have. I'm convinced it was cut because of budget or to meet the release date.

I fully expect a third person option to be patched in later, or at least be included in the multiplayer game.

So is the Judy/Panam talk mostly wifus style love, was expecting way more from their stories they way people talk about them.

the Panam quests were pretty standard stuff. the change of environment was nice but didn't really feel particularly special to me.

I do think that Judy's final quest (Pyramid song) is one of the highlights of the game overall though. And not just because of the waifu angle, it's a legitimately beatiful scenario with some great characterization. I think Judy's general characterization is far more interesting than Panam's, especially with what happens in the main story.

Why does stabbing dead bodies you already kill, up your street cred? Everything think you're a butcher?

Often they are not dead when you shoot them even when they are on the ground they still hold their bodies in pain. You can finish them which gives you the street cred for killing them. You only get the cred when they are dead.

"How did you get such nice clothes?"
"I made a killing"
*** Dual laughing***
"Ha ha, no but seriously I did kill a lot of people to get this suit"

And if you dump the bodies into a hiding place you get more stealth XP :)
Huh, never noticed that XP boost. Cheers.

Question about plot that is never really answered.

We're told that Dex left NC for two years and is now suddenly back to do this job, yet despite beating the game I never saw any explanation of what he was doing those two years. It seemed like a setup for something but is just dropped.

Oh, that is a shame. I was hoping for Yennifer-level character writing.

Damn.

Anyone here shacked up with River or Kerry? They any better?

I don't know about the other romance storylines, but the Judy one was surprisingly very well executed, especially Pyramid Song which is the final event. It was considerate and thoughtful, and was a very touching moment with a real emotional impact. I think Judy is a very well-written character.

I recorded a playthrough of Pyramid Song for this post if you're interested to see for yourself.

The difficulty spike on this is weird. On very hard, some street enemies can kill you in 2-3 shots. Others 50-100 shots.
Then cops 1-3 shots.
Then those cyber psychos or robots, 5-10 shots.
Cars 10-20% of health

Then the damage you deal doesn't matter on what difficulty you are. With the right perks, you can almost 1 shot anyone with a pistol.
I just set the game to very hard for the xp since it almost doesn't matter anway. Then downing enemies with non-lethal and killing them gives twice exp.

Question... if I'm cleaning up all the jobs and crimes in a region, is it required to buy the cars in those areas too for the trophies?

OKAY.

Ohohoh-kay.

This marks the first time I walked out of a game credits roll out of one fat moment of 'eff this'.

Choosing to kill myself was, frankly, not something I found in-character with either V or Johnny, but went with it just to see how it would play out.

And that? That was bleak.

Not because of V's fate, but because of that of porn-tastic manufacturer of erotic neural reenactments Judy Alvarez's: this lady V's romantic partner of the apparent week. Which is funny, because I was planning to make her a mainly hetero prowler, but hey, story beats just kept coming.

I won't be getting into the game's approach to romance and sex. What I'll say is I remember getting into -- surprise! -- that romance sequence with Judy and, well, highly erotic bed action aside, could really only think one thing: Alvarez here has had the worst luck in her love life (Evelyn dying, Malka being forced to die by V's own hand just a mission ago), it's no wonder she is a bit on edge at the drop of a penny. And now that she's getting it on with V, miss no-stranger-to-danger themselves, it would be laughably cruel if, say, Valerie was to ever, you know, join in on the bucket kicking ritual one sudden, sucky day.

Oh you sweet summer child, I would tell myself fifteen minutes ago. I was admittedly not prepared for those video calls in the credits sequence. When Judy's came up, with her miserably sprawled out on the bed, I just laughed, set my controller down, walked out my door, and paced for a while. Don't even know what she was saying. Came back just in time for her to wrap it up. Closed the credits.

Re-started last save.

Now re-doing mission.

Thank you, being kind, rewinding, goodbye ending-that-never-happened, see you never. Have a good drag.

[Was a random, somewhat pleasant surprise to see a third-person cutscene actually in there at least.]

Not sure if there'll be a spoiler thread at any point. Either way, some cents for sense.

From 'quake area to big OH.
I'm level 9 with 11 cred.
I haven't spent any points yet.
I should.

It's a problem of mine. I don't spend points out of fear of screwing up.

I beat Mankind Divided with almost no spent praxis, if I remember correctly.

Yeah the difficulty is set up per area/region or mission. I would have 100% preferred difficulty scaling with you because you don't localise to an area in any order. Missions send you all across the map at different times.

The game crashed during the end credits. I was having a blast in the final few missions, got really revved up, and then poof...crash.

It's like the game actively doesn't want me to be happy with it

Just FY if you didn't realize:

When you unlock an attribute point, you gain a tier in the skill trees it contains that you need to level by doing stuff in the game relevant to it.

Every attribute point you spend unlocks a new tier, and once that tier is maxed you just won't gain progress toward the next perk until you spend another attribute point. So if you're not spending any, you're doing a lot of things (hacking, running/climbing/dodging, shooting, sneaking, etc...) that isn't actually leveling anything.

Same here. Really tempted to dump most of it to reflex to do slow mo but what if I want to sneak around?! Or what if I need to get more health in athletics?

I'm lv20 though and have 14 unspent point :|

I finally had time today to download the 1.5 update on both the PS5 and Series X. As previously brought up by some others, they seem to have increased the resolution in Performance Mode on Series X. I did a ton of back and forth between Quality and Performance and can barely tell the difference now. Previously, Performance mode look a bit soft and a little low resolution, but now it looks extremely close to Quality. On the PS5, I did not notice any major differences. Still seemed a little blurry to me. I created a new V as a Nomad and used one of the presets. I also did this on Series X and had both games running at the same time. When looking in the mirror in the opening part of the Nomad intro, the character looked a little blurry and my characters beard did not look good and had a lot of artifacts. On the Series X it looked really clear.

The other thing I noticed that they fixes in that opening sequence when looking in the mirror, the game prompts you hit the button to remove a badge, but when looking in the mirror your character is not wearing a vest/coat, but if you look down you can see parts of it. Now, the character properly is wearing the vest/coat in the mirror.

I also got my first crash on PS5. Not sure if it is a fluke, but i have 20 hours into the PS5 version and Zero crashes and just running around the starting nomad desert area it crashed.

So far the update has been pretty good since i can see some things are fixed. The NPC density is still the same on both as i loaded a scene near the front of the apartment building and the amount of NPC's seemed the same as before the 1.05 patch. The NPC's do react more to gun shots and run away/seek cover which is neat to see. I also visited some areas that would make the game chug a bit on PS5 and in those areas it seemed a little smoother as well. Overall, the PS5 version seems slightly better visually/less blurry than the 1.04 patch.

You can get both time dilation and increased health via cybernetics and mods, too.

So even if you go full stealth/hacking, you can increase those things in other ways.

And as above, if you don't spend attributes, you'll be wasting a lot of time not levelling the skill trees themselves.

Goddamn does patch 1.05 suck on ps5. Crashing almost every 45 min or so. Has anyone tried deleting/reinstalling and then rebuilding the database?

So, I started playing some more after getting bummed out over not being able to find a 3080. Turns out, it actually runs pretty well on max non-rtx settings on my laptop, so I've been playing it at 45-60 FPS there. The game was mostly fine except for some silly glitches here and there, but then an NPC who had a mission critical item fell through the floor and I had to load an old save. Other than that though, it has been fine.

I was looking into tech trees, currently I'm mostly intelligence based, as I like quick hacking, but I noticed that some of the breach protocol abilities are useful in combat too? How does one use them? I can't see any way to use them during combat, specifically like the one that reduces physical defense.

You breach defences by scanning an enemy or sometimes machine, and choosing to the option to breach. Then you do the mini game to unlock: icepick {reduce quickhack cost}, shut off cameras, and/or mass vulnerability {lower defences).

Finished the Cyberpsycho quests without killing any of them and Regina said she gave me a reward, but I don't see any reward.

I swear if this is another bug...

Wow! I've never seen this option on an enemy. I have seen the turnoff cameras. Mass Vulnerability is the one I want to use, put a perk point into it. I'll try to find it. Thanks.

I feel like some of the language of the combat doesn't really come across as clear as I'd like it to. There's too much visual noise. Cheers!

The game is bugged to all hell but goddamn the characters/story are keeping me engrossed.

Also, when the combat clicks, it's actually pretty damn good and gives you options on how to approach hostile areas.

I wish you could use the manowire to stealth kill enemies but using it as a whip is cool too lol

Ah man. They patched the space oddity thing before I could try.

LOL. I never abused it, and on the character I was going to try it out on soonish, they fixed it before I could. Oh well, I still have 130K from legitimate means prior to ending Act 1, and that's with a 14K deck, 45K legs, a few miscellaneous 2-3K slots and paying off Viktor.

Was there a new hotfix, or patch? Because the biggest money exploit that uses the painting was working as of 1.05.

$80k eddies you can reset perks (but not attributes if you're really that worried about it

$80k requires a discount you can get from a ripper though otherwise 100k

Guys. I am such a glass cannon, it should be criminal.

This was with my silenced revolver.
I've also learned the ways of silenced revolvers. It makes stealth so much more viable for me.
On a related note, is the knife throwing perk useless? Any time I kill someone with a thrown knife all the enemies immediately become alerted. Has to be a bug.

Meredith's "romance" wasn't simply a one night stand. There could've been some hilarious banter between a cold corpo of her stature and my Streetkid V while something genuine developed over time

Seems pretty useless as you burn a knife everytime too so I just kind of think of it as a fun thing to do sometimes.

It's more the dialog than the stories themselves for me. The way they, and most other characters, are written comes off way more authentic for their personality types and situations. From the interactions to the banter, it's just how people talk and interact while also serving a story. Which is in contrast to most games, including story driven ones, where it all exists to serve the story Mass Effect 3's Citadel DLC is probably the only thing I can think of where that approach in a game has actually been done and done well. It was attempted in Andromeda, but I can't think of any other games.
