Epileptic PSA: There are reports that animations and flashing lights in this game can cause seizures. Read this article for more information

Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

Yes and it's so fucking annoying. Same with the 6 month montage after the intro. Why not have us play this and actually establish a relationship with the characters and get to know everything and everyone? There's absolutely 0 world building. Just so much stuff missing. There is no other explanation, they must've intented to put it all in the game and just couldn't finish it in time. Explains the short story length as well. Otherwise it's just a very questionable narrative choice. It's a damn shame really.

They surely did the most of the development in the last two years. Pretty sure it was in development hell. If they started a year ago and released in 2023 or 2024 we would have gotten their vision. They had to cut a ton of things because last gen couldn't do them at all I think and then also had to try to get thing running on the old consoles. Too many cut things, but not changed dialogues and promises in marketing so there has to be a reason for that. Same thing with Witcher 3 back then.

Very early act 2 spoilers

Takemara
got assassins sent after him because he showed doubt during the scene after yorinobou killed his father I thought. He has Adam Smasher protecting him and didn't need someone as intelligent and loyal as Take who quickly figured out what he did going after him....as happens

Like he wasn't an idiot lol.

Thought the sequence of events were pretty clear

Well, that and
he found V alive and was bringing them in for interrogation. Anything V says is damning to Yorinobu, a witness to the events in the tower. So Yorinobu sends assassins after them both to get rid of the eye witness, and the moment those assassins arrive Takemura has all the information he needs to realise V knows something vitally important. And there's only one thing they could know that's important enough to send an Arasaka death squad after them.

I thought it was clear enough, but maybe they could have been more explicit?

I think I don't understand how resolutions work. I have a 4K/60 HDR monitor; can I not just set the resolution to 1080p and crank up everything with HDR? Or is the performance worse than if I somehow just have a 1080p monitor?
You can drop the resolution down but whenever you run something not native to the resolution of the monitor it won't look as good. Televisions do a better job at handling different resolutions than dedicated monitors.

The game definitely has its well-documented shortcomings in regards to representation, but I gotta say I very much enjoy how the characters speak so many languages other than English. Not only that, they mostly got actors that match the character's nationalities/origins. Placide is dubbed by a Haitian, Takemura by a Japanese, and so on. Not many pieces of mainstream media have this much non-English dialogue and foreign actors, let alone a videogame.

Other than that, I'm around 65% done with the main quest and I'm finally starting to get interesting side-quests. I don't know why you pretty much only get Gigs during the first half of the game, but now those interesting side-quests that everybody expected are finally starting to appear. I'm actually a bit overwhelmed by them right now and have no idea why they weren't spread across more evenly through the game.

About 20 hours in and feel like I've finally settled into the game mechanics. I got my 3070 yesterday so I've gotten a good set of graphical settings that work well now.

I like the verticality of the city and how pretty it is. The roads are laid out in a pretty realistic way. Other than that though, the city itself doesn't really DO anything. Just coming from assassin's creed i would really love to scale some of these buildings but I have to keep reminding myself that i can't.

The stealth in this game seems more geared to just getting past enemies rather than incapacitating them all. That took me a while to get used to. Kind of annoying how much easier it is to just plow through them all with a gun though. I've put almost no perks into the body and i still have no trouble blasting through everything if stealth fails.

All the bugs I've encountered are minor graphical glitches. The most annoying one is how ray traced reflections on those semi transparent doors don't work in some of the indoor areas. It ends up looking like an over exposed mirror and you can't see through it but the enemies sure can and it will get you spotted.

It's also V. You go from being all "who the fuck are you" and having the shit kicked out of you by him, to immediately asking him questions like a friend and being cool with him lol.

Funny story, I once got into a fist fight with a person over a misunderstanding, we ended up talking things over and he found he was set up by someone else, we ended up being good friends the next day. Life is weird like that

Not making excuses for the devs/storywriters on this, but if

I was tortured, had my mind ripped from my body, left in nothing for 50 years only to be put in someone elses body that I have no control over, I wouldn't know what to feel. Confusion, anguish, loss, anger? Not sure. When you find out about what how and why Johhny is mad and comes to the realisation as to why he needs V and V needs him, it makes a little more sense.

Is there any official reason why the Xbox version has a Quality / Perfomance mode and the PS5 is apparently only able to run at a Performance mode? Does this imply that it's not an easy patch to enable it for PS5? I would love to see more detail. Honestly don't think the game looks all that bad (and even looks damn good at times, depending on the setting), but the one thing that is nagging me is the basic lighting model. Everything can look flat / matte in color. I've been spoiled with ray tracing in Spider-Man. It's kinda hilarious to me how I went from being blown away with HDR just last year and now I'm like "Pftt...HDR? Lameee...gimme RTX!"

I never realized how integral lighting is to creating an immersive environment. Seeing some PC users porn-level lighting shots with hardcore RTX is making me sad..

These aren't next gen versions of the game.

You have the ps4/ps4 pro version of the game and the XBO/one X version of the game.

Because the One X has a significantly stronger GPU than the PS4 Pro, the Xbox version has more options. That's it.

It's an odd game. I'm playing on series X.

I'm probably about 8 hours in. Im putting off starting the heist.

I don't hate it, and the architecture and "look" is quite stunning but it's like there is no mass to anything. Objects and people don't seem to have anything to them and everything is impermanent, cars and people appear and disappear seemingly at random, but I haven't had any bugs that actually impact anything fundamental.

I don't know exactly what I was expecting I wasn't following the development that much, maybe a hybrid Fallout/gta. But its really not pulling off either. It just doesn't have the systems.

At this point I'm just trying to take the game on its own terms. So far it feels adequate.

The combat encounters have been ok and in a few instances very challenging and I think I'm starting to get the hang of hacking and the stat/upgrade parts of the game.

They removed wall running a while ago, but I thought they said wall hanging with mantis blade was still a thing letting you hang on a wall and dive to a target?

Yet after playing that doesn't seem to be in the game either. Movement options are quite disappointing in this game compared to something like Mankind Divided. The charge jump is basically the only movement ability and it feels good, but there's nothing else apart from that in the game it seems (I know there's double jump but who would use that over charge?)

Okay I have one big question about the story and the biochip specifically that I honestly can't remember if there were any answers about.

So the relic is the super-secret-special version of the biochip. Why exactly is Johnny's engram on it? I know why he was turned into an engram in the first place... but do they ever explain why they put Johnny on this special version of the biochip?

YES. And a lot of other, similar things as well. The beginning of the Takemura arc for example feels similiar. Sometimes it seems as if though the story was written and afterwards content was cut but the story and the dialogues weren't adjusted so they are still referring to the cut content. In general it feels like A LOT of content was cut from the main story line. And certainly not for the better. Or rather the story line was written with more content in mind, yet they didn't have time to add that extra content it just feels off.
I legit felt like I missed something when Takamura goes from
"shut up traitor" then V blanks out and once she gets up Takemura is like "help me" and gives a gun...then tells you that he knows V didn't kill his boss and it was the son who did it.

Yeh it's the talking things over part that was completely missed in my scenario though. Literally went from having the shit kicked out of you, falling asleep and then speaking to him with a casual line and not mentioning anything about that first instance of having your head smashed into the glass by him. It makes zero sense if you take the prompt to grab your car on waking.

From 'quake area to big OH.
After starting act 2, starting to really warm up and enjoy the game. The world is impressive on the surface. As long as you don't spend too much time getting to interact it's okay. The ai and little quirks are a bummer.

The story beats, acting, animations are great. If this these parts continue, it can hold up and carry the short comings.

Onward.

The side quest are the meat of the game just like Witcher 3 and the arcs go on forever so yeah not sure what you're talking about bro
The main and side quest are fun yea, but I am encountering glitches or weird problems literally every 2-3 minutes (on pc).
Yea they are not all game breaking, but it adds up to a lackluster experience.

I don't think its controversial to say I want the map to feel like it has life. For example, all random NPCs share dialogue. So you can literally go up to some man dying on the street, press talk on him, and he will say something like "How can I help you?" Same goes the other way. AI is atrocious. NPCs despawn when you don't look at them, they have absolutely no path finding. They don't even know how to run away when a fight is happening. Cars have little to no AI. They are just objects traveling from point A to B. They don't drive around you, they don't get scared at gunfire, they don't try to drive away if someone bad is happening (they will also despawn if you look away from them). I could go on and on about problems like this. For a game that was in development this long and had this many delays I am surprised at the complete lack of polish. This game just feels like I'm playing the new Fallout game (with even more bugs and glitches) set in a "cyberpunk" world.

I'll have to find it but I read an article that pretty much said double jump was better suited for combat because you can change direction in the air, allowing for more mobility while fighting. They recommended the super jump as a later upgrade. Obviously, this is all personal preference. I have yet to get either myself.

I guess you get more lateral distance with double jump and have control over direction, but I've not come across any place in game where I felt like I could use the extra distance but have come across situations where the extra height charge jump provides has been useful.

Placide is dubbed by a Haitian

I showed Placide to my Haitian friend and he was like "Whoa, holy shit, this guy is a badass". Really liked him.

Honestly I agree with him, the Voodoo Boys are amazing

Everything is locked by street cred, then attribute level, so it's kind of pointless early on until you get a shit ton of cash. They are generally all really very passive outside of 3 or so slots, like the hold down LB/RB abilities on the left side, legs, and quick hack processor slot you can change for an ability if you want to ignore hacking completely. Don't feel like your missing out and just check in with them as you pass by to see what's for sale

Oh, is there is stash capacity? I started act 2 over weight.

And it's junk better to sell, or is it meaningful to creating at all?

There are clothing mods that add to capacity and also skill trees that add as well. Clothes will come with 1-4 slots from what I've come across and there are different rarity mods that add much more space to your inventory.

Edit - Just sell junk, no crafting use

I can't turn on ray tracing and use a giant dildo at the same time, fuck sake CDPR.

Anyway so the structure of this game is weird, I'm kind of discovering why the pacing feels so off to me. At first I went off and did a bunch of side stuff like the AI cabs cause I didn't feel like I had my bearings in the world. Turns out this is a mistake, the game isn't structured like this. You're supposed to take main story tasks and at certain points events will happen and a character will say 'speak to you later', or 'meet up tonight'. That is the point at which you do all the 'filler' stuff and try to find out if there are any interesting stories in Night City (sometimes there are, like one involving a clown).

So the idea I guess is all these stories interweave with each other and you pursue different relationships at once, rather than grind shit out like it's Rockstar or Ubisoft. I get what they're going for and I guess it's neat but I'm not quite convinced of it. It does do a good job of giving an illusion that these people have their own lives and shit they have to do at least. Or maybe it is just this set of missions I have right now which has this weird structure. It does mean tho that I look forward to hearing back from certain characters cause for the most part they're all reasonably likeable and the stuff that happens with them keeps you guessing.

This also ties in with the way the story develops I guess, where if you've played more than a few hours you'll know that (beginning of Act 1 spoilers)
v getting her brain taken over by Keannu Reeves, the prick
so time is supposed to be of the essence but of course this is an entirely scripted illusion. I guess that they wanted to make it feel like V has time to kill so she does all this other silly crap while waiting for a development on a different story thread. Awaiting callback, so time to do some street racing (this story I enjoy, it's cute)

I'm still struggling to quite figure out the way to play this game. The world is immense but also not designed to be explored, it's just a setting. A backdrop, about as deep as a pre-rendered background in a Final Fantasy game but much more immersive. I think CDPR have their own opinion on what an open world game is supposed to be like and they want to deliver this very curated story like they did in Witcher 3. What trips me up is that Witcher 3 is a game where you ride around repetitive but pretty wilderness on your horse on the way to objectives. In Cyberpunk they replace the trees and hills with streets and skyscrapers. You expect this space to be filled in with stuff cause it's where people are, but it isn't the case. I'm not certain it's cause the game was rushed out or anything, they genuinely seem to have put all this effort into what is largely set dressing to tell a very curated story. That is the sense I'm getting at this point, although there's no real excuse for the AI and non-functional wanted system

I don't really know what I feel about the game. I'm sort of putting in a lot of effort to get through it and I find it weirdly compelling but also not particularly rewarding. I'm still not able to afford ripper doc upgrades, I spent all my money on clothes. This aspect of the game continues to boil my balls and this is the one part where a Ubisoft or GTA style filler mission structure would make things much more palatable. But I guess CDPR really don't want to make it easy to get that stuff. The resource constraints being the closest it gets to being 'immersive sim'

Uzz-V continued to be a disaster lesbian around Panam, did more of her quests. Those were fun.

After finishing one I got a call from Judy asking me to come round quickly, figured hey finally I can get out of the friend zone and have some fun.

It was not fun.

Anyone else find it jarring when..
You go from being beaten the shit out of by Johnny and telling him to fuck off as you crawl over to the pills and take one to get rid of him. Then a short sleep later you go pick up your car and you're like best buds saying "You see that Johnny?" when the other car crashes into you and he's chilling next to you?

Feels like I missed about a week's worth of story and development.
The side quests interactions were definitely written separate from the main story. I was shocked at that very moment too.

The main quest with

Panam

is f incredible.

They made this quest feel so real and engaging. Felt like a real human interaction in some parts. (and a movie-like scene)

The character development is so freaking good in almost every quest.

Panam is great, the writing is really good with her, I was instantly into her character on the first quest with her (and really want her outfit), but also was disappointed when I realised she's not into women (been having a great time with Judy though). Something to save for a male V playthrough, at least.
