Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

Playing on PS5. Had to reload my save three times, twice because a side quest broke, once because Jackie dissapeared in the main story.

Oh and one hard crash! About 3hrs in.... 🙃

glitches aside the game seems FINE but not amazing. V is too edgy for me, and the other characters haven't grabbed me yet. (I have heard that the writing starts to come alive in the side content so holding out till I get further into the game before casting a final judgement).

Night City is the biggest thing this game has going for it though, the setting is doing a ton of heavy lifting right now

Very neat little opening detail for Corpo -

Planning my V as a Lawful Neutral, Gets the job done no fuss no muss straight-laced type. I spent the whole intro plane ride not taking a drink (despite the prompt being there the entire time) and when I met up with my buddy at the bar I refused his cheers drink and then V says
"Cmon you know I don't drink"

Damn fine insight game. Kudos.

No chance, they said early next year.

Have they said early 2021? Think they have only said "sometime in 2021".

Already in April (when release date was September), they said next gen will come some time in 2021. With further delays and all timelines having moved out, doubt it is going to be early, more likely mid-year imo.

Honestly. I'm not really sure what kind of performance people expected for the ps4 and Xbox. You had to have seen this comming.

Halo infinite should drop last gen as well, it will be the same mess.

Unfortunately, your character still says they don't drink at that point even if you do have a drink in the plane.

Think i decided to play this on my tv like a console game. 4k using ultra performance 30fps cap with RT on with controller and its playable and would prob be similar to the ps5 version. I think im happy with this.

Uh I wish photo-mode was better, you either get stuck in 1st person and can't move around, or a terrible orbit camera.
I wish it was like Miles Morales, let me fly about within a fixed distance so I can actually look at what I want to photo!

It hasn't for me so far. I'm all but forcing myself to play it, hoping it starts being interesting. But it's dull. I don't like the characters or the story, and the game's atmosphere and design is unappealing. It doesn't make me want to explore the world like TW3 did. It's a poorly designed open world, very pretty at times though.
I feel the same

He would say the same thing if you even took a drink. The game just gives you the illusion of your choices mattering when it doesn't.

Game seems cool and looks gorgeous, can't say I'm not interested. The performance on anything but high end systems is a major hitch though, not really interested enough to splurge on a new pc. If there's ever a cloud version on Switch though I'd probably jump on it.

Game is crashed almost 20+ times on my PS5. Also that resolution and graphics are horrible and blurry. What can be said, I'll definitely wait for a proper updated version.

So there is no improvement patch for Xbox? People said 1.0.0.6 is the janky one but it's the newest one i've got. I thought there was a massive day 1 patch?

Sidebar, I want to headbutt whoever popularized tiered, randomized loot systems in single player games.

Literally the only game I've played where it works is Diablo. I hated it in Ass Creed, I hated it in Nioh, and I hate it in Cyberpunk.

Give me a lesser amount of weapons with upgrade paths any day of the week.
Definitely the worst part of the game for me. Having to pick up and throw away weapons to keep up with damage is dumb.

I'd maybe tolerate it more if crafting wasn't utter shit.

Playing with an RTX 3080 and a Ryzen 3600X at 1440p ultrawide, and hitting 60+fps is insanely rare. Usually around the mid 40s, and sometimes as low as mid 30s. That's with settings pretty much maxed, including raytracing, and balanced DLSS (no settings on psycho though).

GPU usage is around 65% and CPU usage around 50%. Switching off raytracing entirely nets me an extra 10fps at best. Don't see many CPU dependant options to play around with (crowd density etc). Horrifically optimised game, but hopefully patches sort it out. I can't stand low framerates and it's really hurting the experience. Conversations are nice, but as soon as you're in combat and need to move the camera a lot... 🤢🤮

I want to say, despite the large amount of bugs I've experienced so far and the soft image, I haven't had anything stop my enjoyment of the game. So far it's telling an interesting story and the characters have some depth to them.

Wow and I thought I had it rough with a 1050 ti. Let me know how it goes. I'm interested

Hey, super late response here, but my GTX 1050 experience went very poorly! Haha. Even on 720p on low settings I couldn't hit 30fps. I just kind of made a weird decision and signed up for a Stadia trial and bought the game there (10 bucks off with trial). Never considered using that service, and it might have been a hasty move, but I just fired it up on my 4K TV and it runs incredibly well to my eyes. There is a 4k visual mode and a 1080p 60fps mode which both look pretty great to me. I'm not the biggest technical nitpicker, but it looks like the graphics settings are cranked up pretty decently.

PS4 and Xbox One seem inexcusable. I can see "not as good as Series X/PS5" but it looks like they're running 720p and 20fps.

Never should have been released. As others have said stuff like RDR2 and Spider-Man are leagues past it on last gen platforms. No excuse for how bad this is.

RT is really not worth the performance hit... And that's coming from a 3090. Too many bugs and weird graphical glitches takes away from the realism to make RT "immersive", especially at the performance cost.

This might be a game that I'll have to pick up next year, when bugs are ironed out and when graphic card supply is no longer restricted.

I'm totally surprised Cyberpunk is actually released this month. I thought it was coming out in April 2021 - so I'm happy to wait.

The studio that introduced growing beard on the witcher 3 won't let you change you hairstyle or facial hair in this game. Talk about going backwards ffs...
