Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

The pre-load downloaded a 15GB patch. Will there be another patch on Thursday?

What are the biggest bugs so far? Anything game breaking?

Characters floating through the sky, sound stopping in conversations/overlapping dialogue, characters animations not syncing correctly

What exactly are these artifacts (check around the girl in the picture)? I have also seen them in Spider Man. Are those RT artifacts and why do they happen?

That doesn't look like raytracing at all, that looks like rasterised screen space reflections. RT would be much more accurate than that. I'm not seeing any off-screen reflections like the roof of that building in the reflections. I'm doubly sure looking at the person mid stride to the right

Edit - Yup, this is RT in the same scene

After looking at the recommended specs and this chart, I'm scratching my head wondering if the 2080 Ti just doesn't exist anymore or something, even though there is only one official Cyberpunk 2077-branded graphics card in existence and it is that.

Welcome to PC gaming lol. But seriously, 2080 Ti owners can take a look at 3070's and expect similar performance.

Has CDPR said anything about when a PS5 next gen patch may come out? I have the game preordered (physical copy) but not sure how much I want to play without RTX, etc. Honestly beyond RTX I'm not even sure what a next gen patch would entail. 60 fps performance mode I guess?

Hearing about all the bugs and stuff makes me think I might just wait 2-3 months and see what the status on the patch is before I dive in too much. Will probably still install just to explore the open world and stuff.

Witcher 3 was a real mess at launch and they practically rewrote the combat engine post launch, and made huge improvements on load times so I wouldn't be surprised if the game performs very differently in six months than thursday.

Tom'sHardware noted they will have a full suite of benchmarks after launch, including more than Ultra and Medium presets and a lot more graphics cards. These benchmarks are also on a version that is more demanding, due to DRM and whatnot (see: https://twitter.com/GamersNexus/status/1336066826233651202). However, you can pretty much substitute 2080 Ti with a RTX 3070 in benchmarks.

Several reviews have mentioned high-quality writing, but the general consensus here seems to be the game is a shallow, juvenile take on cyberpunk themes without any worthwhile commentary. Maybe the dialogue itself is well-written but the overall plot and story arc isn't?
Yeh that seems to be a consistent issue with the overarching veneer of the city. Not exactly surprising though as it was a persistent thought from everything they showcased prior. Willing to dive into things for the sake of set dressing without actually having anything meaningful to say about them.

After having read Polygon's review, it now seems clear to me that the actual star of this game will be the world itself, just like it was in Witcher 3 for me. Tbh, that is what has me coming back to W3 even now, not the gameplay, the quests or even the characters and their stories. The world just feels so organic and real to me that you just want to spend time there. Hoping this will be the same. As usual though i will wait for the GOTY version eventually.

There are several things to note
  • they mention that their review version does come with denuvo DRM in order to stop pirated review copies and that this MAY have an impact on performance - DRM will be removed for retail versions
  • Nvidia drivers have not yet been updated for CP2077, updated drivers MAY improve performance
  • there is supposed to be another day1 patch coming up very soon that may or may not improve performance
so there's still hope for me and my 2080 for 1440p RT :)

Finally! Good work by the stuff to tie the needed knots here. Can't believe I had to visit other places to following the review score madness though, we need to do better in the future, felt like the board crumbled for awhile, but that's old news now. Good to have this thing going now!

Haven't preordered yet and there seem to be a serious need for patches here, gives me time to plan a bit, still undecided where I should start.
Plan A: PC. I assume that a 1080ti isn't going to give me the experience I want, would I get zero raytracing?
Plan B: Cloud. Has anyone talked about how it runs on Geforce Now? RTX on?

Anyway, metacritic 91 on PC is a solid score, didn't expect that, should be an amazing experience after the bugs are squished!

1080ti won't be able to do RTX, but it'll do ultra settings just fine.

I feel like the 'wise' thing for me to do is wait a bit for post releases patches to come out to squash some of these bugs, as I really have no shortage of games to play in the meantime. But I'm probably too impatient to do that. This has been my most anticipated game since the E3 2018 trailer, and I'm quite eager to experience it for myself after all this time. I think if I run into some really annoying bugs early on I'll probably take that as a cue to wait for some more patches though. At the very least, I'll be happy to have the character creator available in the meantime, as I imagine I'll be spending several hours there to start with lol. I feel in a lot of games with character customization I wind up creating a similar looking characters in all of them, but may try for something a bit different here.

Also not sure what life path to pick. Don't think any of them have really grabbed me from their descriptions. May start as Corpo, if only because I prefer the default outfit they get the most of the 3 lol.

I can't wait to watch some of these "influencers", the ones in the game and in the yellow chairs play this game on stream and see their faces when they are playing a buggy mess. Trying to downplay the bugs and glitches as they are basically CDPR shills.

This was always going to happen. So many delays, and if anything needed more. No old gen footage as it must be horrible. Having to develop this game for over 10 different consoles is mad, and all those lower end ones like PS4, Xbox One must have sucked time and resources.

Now reviewers don't get codes and have to only use CDPR trailer footage, and not their own is nuts. How is this game currently a 91? I know how but man what a mess.

Give me an example where Denuvo has heavily impacted the performance of a game. This has been debunked several times with newer version of denuvo iirc showing less than 5% impact every single time. It's CDPR damage control.

Nvidia drivers 9/10 times give you minimal FPS boosts and usually just helps with crashes though there are outliers that do heavily increase performance but I wouldnt count on it.

Maybe I'm reading that crazy ass graph wrong, but can I really not hit 1440/60 on a 2060 with DLSS?

This was the chart I was looking for. They don't have the day one patch or the Nvida optimized driver, right? A drop to the 50's isn't too awful with G-sync, but hopefully the Nvidia driver and day 1 patch help the performance out.

I don't even have a 1080p screen in my home, do we have any 1440p benchmarks for 20-series cards?

Not that great writing would be nearly enough to wash away all the hideous bullshit from CDPR... though I'm morbidly curious to play this for myself so I can follow along with the discussions in the coming weeks. This really feels like a flashpoint game in the industry with its intersectionality between the massive AAA hype machine + flirting with the absolute dregs of Gamer culture in a year where we all need escapism more than ever but also bore witness to the biggest civil rights movement in human history. I'm just... fascinated by the depressing spectacle of it all. But I also don't want to support this product, though the cynic in me is very cognizant that my decision on whether or not to purchase Cyberpunk will have a 0.0% impact on CDPR's success and platform.

What a crazy little hunk of junk this release is.

Not sure where you are getting a general consensus from, given how few reviewers there are and how early days it is.

Seems pre-mature, although I don't expect anything particularly profound from this game. I mean few if any AAA games or high budget films for that matter are anywhere near cutting edge when it comes to philosophical musings these days...Certainly, Witcher 3, despite having great storytelling overall within the gaming medium, didn't really have much interesting to say. But neither did the Witcher book series either. In fact fantasy in general lacks a certain engagement with profound intellectual themes. Sci fi literature is a different beast. See for example Kin Stanley Robinson.

1440p at medium settings without RT runs at about 53 fps average on a RTX 2060 according to tomshardware. They have more benchmarks.
At Ultra in goes into 20s.

But they also mention a 130% performance increase at 1080p when using DLSS 4K which makes the game look like native 1440p.
So DLSS seems worth it in some cases.

5% impact is a big deal when you are a website that specialises in accurate benchmarking performance like TH and GN.

That 5% can push the 3080 to over 60fps avg at 1440p Ultra w/ DLSS + RT. Its meaningful.
And your statement on nvidia drivers is bogus, there have been plenty occasions where their drivers have given around a 10% increase in performance (most recently, AC:Valhalla)

Only 6GB VRAM seems to be the limitative factor here. I have also a rtx 2060 and this was expected for me, 6GB is too little for above 1080p resolutions from now on.

In fact, you should expect even worse performance in a laptop GPU.

Fuck, so RT is probably not playable for anyone with a 20 series card.

Welp, guess I am done with PC gaming lol

In any case, you should check this paragraph from the Tom's Hardware article:

"We'll get to the DLSS results in a moment, but it's worth mentioning that you don't have to have RT enabled to use DLSS. For example, the RTX 2060 managed a respectable 55 fps average at 4K medium with DLSS Performance mode. Sure, that's upscaling 1080p to 4K using an AI algorithm, but the end result is actually quite good—better than native 1080p, probably comparable to 1440p".

So, if you are willing to make concessions (such as RT) you can still get great results with lower GPUs. DLSS can push the RTX 2060 lifespan, it will depend on the developer. For Cyberpunk it seems that we might be fine, let's see what the launch day patch has to say.

So all the reviews played the PC version right? Interested to know how this runs on the Series X, it looked ok from that video they put out but they could have been cherry picking moments where the framerate held up.

You should really wait for benchmarks, once the Day 1 patch drops, the Nvidia driver will be available and the final version without DRM is there. Why do you get crazy about a benchmark of a non-final build without Nvidia drivers? I know so many games that heavily improved in the last days before release (during review periods), both when it comes to bugs and performance. Sure, not all is great and I'm sure there will still be plenty of bugs with the Day 1 Patch installed and performance might be a real issue on base consoles, but I'm hopeful that the game will run well enough on a RTX 2060 with DLSS and RT on in 1080p with high/very high or ultra settings. Which is fine for me, with my Laptop.

Why do reviewers seem to care so little about bugs when scoring the game, it's so weird.

Yeah there are frequent bugs everywhere every moment of the game and it's horribly optimized, 9/10 amazing game.

Yep, day 1 patch + no DRM + proper drivers would make a severe difference, I'm quite calm about performance tbh.

If i have a 2070 what are the odds i can do ultra 1440p and have roughly close to 60fps? Without raytracing?

Tom's Hardware:

A 130 percent bump in performance while keeping the crisp UI elements is certainly worth a thought. (You can use non-DLSS upscaling as well, if you want, though the results definitely lose some detail.)

This might be useful to extrapolate to your GPU. COnsider that there is stil a patch incoming + no DRM retail version.
