Is this game as insanely hard as it is being portrayed in some circles?

It's hard as in you better purchase a couple 20 2 dollar controllers in case you throw in against the wall. ;p

It's not as balls hard as the media tells it though, like Dark Souls. You can compare it with Super Meat boy, a lot of trial and error, learning and programming the patterns in to your mind until you can dream it.

No.

It's hard in the sense that you will die a lot. That's expected but it shouldn't be overly frustrating since you lose little progress when you die. This isn't hard like an old 8 bit game where you are starting over if you fuck up. Unless you cannot handle any type of platformer or you have zero tolerance for losing you should be fine.

The bosses in the flying stages. They were no-fun filler-levels. Ultimately they led to me just beating the final island on simple and not bothering to finish the game past that.

:( I enjoyed immensely the flying stages, but because I like shoot'em ups (I'm not good at them, but like them anyway). The flying bosses were one of the highlights of the game to me.

Took forever for it to click but it finally did after I changed the control scheme up. Super fun. Gonna look to beat this after almost giving it up

I changed the OP a bit. Hope it looks better. Shoutouts to Wozzer who provided his assets.

Anyways, I just noticed that the time that you spend on playing Cuphead on PC is actually not being counted in the XBL statistics. I still have the same amount of play time, despite me playing ~3 hours on PC yesterday.

I still haven't beaten a balloon clown and Funhouse Frazzle in World 2. They were mercilessly hard. :(

I know I need to "git gud", but still...

EDIT: Finally, I've beaten Funhouse Frazzle, now off to balloon clown.

I thought the game was very hard (maybe the hardest I've ever played), but I had little to no experience with games like this. If Contra is one of your favourite games, you'll probably have an easier time.

The visuals and the music never made it a chore to play, though. Everytime I died I was happy to start over.

2 extra hit points charm is a must. thats my only tip to everyone.
Nah man, smoke bomb and auto-parry are much more useful. Those extra 2 hit points aren't going to make that much of a difference and smoke and auto-parry make a huge difference on certain bosses/sections.

I don't know why I didn't do this earlier, but I just watched a couple speedruns and my mind is blown. lol

I'll definitely try some of those 3rd Island Boss strats.

Hard as hell. But rewarding.

I have it on PC, but I don't have an Xbox controller for my laptop. I've tried playing with the keyboard, which seems doable, but I can't get past the first boss...on normal. Figure I'll go hard with it when my X1X comes.

I just bought this today and I gotta say I'm really loving it. Being a player that overrelies on health mechanics like e-tanks and coins when playing platformers, this game is kicking my ass and making me question how to approach each scenario, usually with more caution than what I'm used to, which makes it feel so darn rewarding when you complete a section or a boss.

I was pretty close to getting my first A+ ranking boss fight but I got hit literally in the last second of the encounter and it fucked me up. I recorded, will upload later if I can.

Got all contracts on Isle 3 and went to the Casino. These speed run strats payed off and they are not even that difficult to pull off. It's incredible how much more aggressive you can play and be more successful than playing it defensive.

Anyways, I gave King Dice a couple tries, but it's obviously pretty hard on the 1st couple tries. I'll have to play arround with all the mini bosses to see which I'm most comfortable with.

Also, I rolled a "Start from Beginning" with 1 HP left. Stopped playing after that happened (and because it was getting late and it was my last run anyways). Pretty unfair, though. :'(

You'll get the hang of the dice rolls soon enough! They're pretty easy to figure out. If I recall correctly I jumped at the number immediately after the one I wanted, and parried on the way down. That always gave me what I wanted. I've seen people say they parry on the way up and that works for them too.

I'm 15 contracts in. Need another 2 before dice man. Game is hard but fair. The feeling when you finally beat a hard boss is unmatched.

Beat the game on Normal. :O

Now onto either A Ranks or Expert runs. Me thinks A Ranks 1st.

It's like Super Meat Boy cosplayed as Contra. You'll die a lot but the challenge is worth it and, while you can just simply beat the game, there is still more to keep you coming back.

So, yes, it is hard. But you'll figure things out quickly on some bosses, slower on others, and it'll frustrate you in all the right ways. But I don't know about "insanely" hard.

Its really not. Theres no punishment for dying other than starting over so that means the second you die you can literally just pick it right back up from where you started and try again. If youve ever played a 2d side scrolling shooter you'll be absolutely fine. And if not, you can certainly get through it.

I've played through the entire game up to the finale in co-op with a buddy. I'm making it harder on myself this way, aren't I?

I was one of those who was concerned about this game being a Boss Rush. I wanted the Run and Gun stages.

Now that I am actually playing the game I kinda don't care about the Run and Gun stages and just want Bosses lol

I guess the devs really knew what they were doing.

Just finished Inkwell Isle 2 (didn't finish the second Run and Gun stage though, the one where you constantly have to invert gravity). That damn dragon was something else.

Anyways, I am loving this game. It's so damn beautiful.

Currently stuck on this little guy, I'm trying to get the parrys for getting at least an A- on the first section, but I always make dumb miscalculations on the second section that leads me to completely crumble on the third one.

I'll probably shed a tear or two when I'm done with him, it's been like 25 tries already.

Nice OT. I 200% it a couple days back and it will be without a doubt my GOTY. My favorite levels of the game were Honeycomb Herald, All Bets are Off, Floral Fury and Funhouse Frazzle.

Love this game, my favorite I played this year. Shame we missed Teeth (one of the devs) on the migration.

edit: never mind, he's here! :D Teeth

Finally jumped in now I have my X1X.

Did the first run and gun (taking no hits) in 3 attempts. The first boss on the other hand... it's fair to say my skill lies in plaforming lol.

Game looks and plays amazing though. Can't wait to do more.

One of my favorite games of all time. Already unlocked all achievements a few weeks back. Looking forward to jumping back in once DLC hits.

Well, finally beat the Dragon, holy shit that felt soooooo soooooo goooooood. Now I'm stuck with Wally Warbles due to my stubbornness in trying to get at least an A- on every boss.

Here's a video of how, literally, on the last second, an A+ slipped through.

Finally caved and bought this this morning. Probably going to start on the weekend. I'm subbing to this thread so I can vent my anger somewhere when I start playing.

OP is extremely misleading, I am reporting it. It says Cuphead costs 19.99, but it doesn't mention the spare controllers needed!!
Seriously though, it's a great game and I am going to try and run the GOG version on my MBP under Mac OS.

One of my friends did a no damage run of this game! I think he is the first person to ever do that, too!

I'll be sure to check this out when I'm done, figuring out the bosses by yourself is such a core experience of this for me, haha.

Got a couple more contracts today (Dr. Kahl's Robot and Sally Stageplay). I did Sally's without using the invisible dash for the wave prop and avoided it! Proud of that, although it was an A- run.

Is this game as insanely hard as it is being portrayed in some circles?

That depends on your experience with classic SHMUPs and Run n' Gun shooters. If you've played a decent amount of old SHMUPs (i.e., Gradius), the game will likely be fairly easy. You'll spend some time learning all of the boss patterns, but very few of them are befuddling or unclear. I don't think I spent over an hour on a single boss; most of my runs took 30 minutes at the most.

However, if you've had little SHMUP/RnG experience, the game will likely be quite difficult. Most bosses only take a minute and a half to two minutes to beat, but dying means you have to start over from the beginning of the fight. This may frustrate many SHMUP newbies.

The saving grace here is that you can restart any boss at any time. This makes learning fights far easier than in old games. In old games, the quickest way to learn a boss is to practice it with save states on an emulator. Arcade cabinets and consoles don't allow you that luxury. Thus, in an old SHMUP, you'll likely fight an unfamiliar boss for a few minutes before dying and having to start allllllll over again from the beginning of the game. Learning bosses takes much longer as a result.

Regardless of your classic shooter experience, Cuphead is a very fun game. Almost all deaths in the game feel fair, and you can quickly pick up on patterns and especially hazardous attacks without the game holding your hand too much. Only the Phantom Train gave me particular trouble, especially because the falling candy bars can screw you over with RNG.

My only criticism is that there's too much screen clutter in some fights. The Dragon's final stage, the Bee boss, the Phantom Train, and some of the Run n' Gun stages are guilty of this (like the pearl-shooting oyster in the octopus portion of the Pier stage). In the Dragon's final stage, for example, you have to dodge fireballs that explode when you shoot them. These fireballs sometimes get lost in the foreground, especially when the lightning strike graphic appears in the background.

Contrary to most peoples' experiences, I didn't have too much trouble with the Clown. The rollercoaster is definitely annoying to manage, though, especially in Expert. There's a special trick you can use to quick kill the Clown's final form, though.

Jumping into the center of the clown's face, then firing an EX Spread, will make all eight of the EX Spread shards hit the Clown's face. This does a ton of damage. You can use this strategy on any boss that lets you stand or jump inside their hurtbox area, like the Cat form in the Mouse fight, the lightning demon things in the Phantom Train's third stage, and The Devil's eyeballs in his second and third stages (just don't get hit by the spinning axe when it spawns in his iris!).

It's exactly as hard as Dark Souls in that it's reputation for being hard is overblown.

Both games require you to have patience and embrace a handful of deaths to unexpected things, but are otherwise completely workable.

Before I start playing this game I'd like to know, I've heard that you can't fight the final boss if you're playing it on easy. Does this mean I have to beat EVERY boss on normal? Or just a specific few?

Only run n gun stages are optional. In order to progress to each next area you have to collect all contracts (I.e. beat all bosses on normal)
