Not an uncommon idea, this idea probably dates to the early days of the OG xbox. But the Series X looks a lot like a PC and MS has been on a PC gaming kick. The way I picture it working is, for an extra $100, you get the Series X Pro which comes with an extra hard drive with Windows 10 installed on it. Before start up, press the Xbox button and it boots up as an Xbox or press the PC button and it boots up as a PC. Xbox side of thing is siloed off. I'm sure there are things I'm not considering but it doesn't sound like science fiction.

Don't know about having a PC that I can't upgrade but it's an interesting proposition.

I'd rather just have it contained in the Xbox ecosystem and just allow for physical upgrades beyond the hard drive.

No they won't do this. The console business model is predicated on them getting a portion of revenue for all the games you buy to play on it, which would be bypassed if it was just a PC.

Sounds like a developer mode, which I don't think it out of the realm of possibility, but not for typical consumers. That said, I don't think most console gamers are looking for something like that. It would be nice though, even without the ability to upgrade.

I've been saying this for over a year, the new xbox ecosystem is just a Steam Machine/SteamBox, but actually successful. I fully expect to see upgraded Series X/S every three years like a PC.

Since last gen i always maintained MS should make a PC console. It seemed like that as the general direction they wanted to go with with the one anyway.

I don't think it looks like a PC considering the scale of it. (6" x 12"), but it is almost a PC at this point given the architecture inside of it. Not sure what they would gain by opening it up more and saying "this is now a PC, not a console".

drivers, bsod's, things like that are not gonna be things ms wants contaminating their xbox. plus i have no idea how it would work but, wouldn't keeping such a thing from being hacked be a nightmare?

Besides that, I keep my console under my TV and my PC at my PC desk. I and most still need two seperate devices either way, so it wouldn't really help anything.

I don't think they'd do this, nor do I think I'd be interested unless they tailored the experience to the living room and ensured that the Windows versions of media apps were on par with the Xbox versions (and that the ones that aren't on Windows and ARE on Xbox get released for this version of Windows).

I do think they'd have an advantage over other consoles' functions if their console was more PC-like while still being as user-friendly as a regular console; just more options for the player.

Console companies sell consoles at very low profit margin to make money back from games, they don't want you to buy one and use it as a PC

I'm pretty sure most consumers wouldn't want that. People buy consoles for ease of use. I mean, if they went that route we'd have to buy anti virus and install programs. Sounds wack.

It would be nice if it could boot into Windows out of the box. Let the easily intimidated run it in console mode and let the big bois run it in Windows mode.

Xbox software for console mode. Windows software for Windows mode. I might actually buy one then.

Love the idea. Xbox, Steam, Uplay and Origins all accessible through Live (but free).

They aren't going to let you swap out parts in an Xbox, at least not without completely voiding your warranty.

Yeah not gonna happen considering they just pushed Game Pass onto PC in the past few months, the option is there if you want to play all their first party stuff on there plus more. I do think the distinction in general between console and PC is getting greyer in general what with mid gen refreshes and minor gfx settings tweaks (performance mode vs quality), but they will always want to have something with a very streamlined UI that doesn't require futzing about with drivers and other general PC maintenance know how.
