This kills a lot of the appeal for the Mario Maker content creators. It's not like they're gonna skip the game at all, it's the focus of several channels, it's just that I know for a fact a lot of them were gonna race each other pretty regularly.

Properly implemented online features could have fueled so many features for Giant Bomb. I'm not sure if anybody wants to tune in just to watch Dan Ryckert play with randos though.

Is it really? These guys invented friends code, voice only over phone app, no messaging on their current service, they are backwards when it comes to online, they find it extremely challenging to match features of OG Xbox live, 17 years on.
They're not oblivious, they're out of their depth. IMO they want to do this with minimal cost, they don't see online as a living opened ended, multi generation spanning service, it feels like they treat their online stack like console generations, and rebuild rather then evolve like MS/Sony.
And it still doesn't receive enough criticism. People know it's bad, but it's more of like "meh, it's bad, but whatever". And it just continues to be bad and people just get used to it.
There were free online networks in 2005 that offered more functionality and utility than Nintendo's current online offering. I don't even know how it's still so abysmal. If I were an executive at Nintendo I would be utterly embarrassed that my company's name is even associated with such a horrendous service.

It's sad. Nintendo has knocked it out of the park with the Switch but have completely and utterly failed with how they handle 1. Online and 2. BC/Virtual Console offerings.

Probably just keeping it ambiguous as Mario Maker will no doubt get constant updates. They could be working on it now but I wouldn't read into it

It def is, especially now that we have other games like Splatoon and Smash that have established online modes and online is a premium service. What a shame.

I'm betting it's an actual infrastructure issue instead of it being just about leaderboards. Their online system and back end is so thoroughly worthless and fucked I bet they just can't design friend lobbies/invites.
