This one-shot offers the curious—and the brave—a glimpse into the nightmare realities that the Batman Who Laughs has created in tales by creators who know what it means to have a truly twisted sense of misfit humor. What's that mean? You guessed it: It's time for a team up!

John Constantine : Hellblazer #12 By Spurrier, Campbell - John Constantine faces his final reckoning with the older version of himself who's been seeding magical chaos all around England, while the lives of all his friends hang in the balance…and that is not a good situation for John Constantine's friends. Anyways since it was the last post in the last thread and I wanted to share my thoughts on some old shit, which is volume 1 of Geoff Johns' Teen Titans

www.resetera.com

COMICS!!! |OT| October 2020 | I see that face in my nightmares.

So I read the first volume of Geoff Johns’ Teen Titans and I gotta say I wasn’t really a fan. The Young Justice squad (Connor, Cassie, Tim, and Bart) are all pretty out of character. The thing that makes them so much fun is the fact that they’re “fuck yeah we’re legacies and we love it,” but...

I'm rewatching DCAU Superman and it never struck me how weird it is to open this series up with an entire episode devoted to Superman's dad.

Fuck I forgot about that. The first episode isn't even about Superman. It's just about what happens on Krypton. They're like "yall know Superman. How about Jor El?" I'm pretty sure the TAS rewrite of Brainiac's origin is pretty definitively used every else, too. Like I honestly only recently learned that Brainiac was part of a separate alien race.

Used to think Braniac was a robot because if DCAU and Legion of superheroes not a green human
Even then he flip flops between being green vulcan and advanced robot

Yeah DCAU Brainiac is my favourite. I don't even know what's up with the other versions.

As for the first episode it's not bad it's just weird, especially in comparison to B:TAS establishing Batman and his rogues whole cloth. Superman adaptations always put a little too much undue emphasis on his past.

I think they only really do it for the first few episodes. After that they don't do Krypton stuff too much. Like I think he has his Fortress from the get go. There's the two-parter with Jax-Ur and Mala and the Phantom Zone, but beyond that and the Brainiac episodes the most recurring story threads are Apokolips and Luthor's bullshit.

Think im going to start reading Birthright next. Im still working on Ultimate Miles and just started Venom again now that ive got the ohc and Absolute Carnage. But Birthright has been one of those image books that I never really hear about anymore and just surprised that its still going lol.

How many issues do they do for Birthright each year nowadays? Seems like Williamson is pretty busy with DC work still too.

Don't ask questions that might get you hurt
How is Dr. Stone? Dont think ive seen you talk about that one.

DCAU Toyman is such an incredible character that I genuinely have no idea why DC didn't look at him and decide to import him over to the comics.

Dr Stone is really beautiful. The art is redicilously good, Boichi is a master. The story is very science heavy but I really enjoy the characters especially Senku and Suika. You should check it out.

He thought it would disintegrate him right?
How do you go from there to time travel
We don't know what Toyman thought, just "I built a giant robot to get rid of Superman." Everyone ELSE thought it disintegrated him EXCEPT for Batman. Because Batman used basic physics, but only after looking way closer and more obsessively at a scene than most would.

Nocturnals: Black Planet (Dan Brereton, 1 vol.)
VXYCC3f.jpg

Dan Brereton's Halloween art grabbed my attention when I was looking for the perfect books to read this month a few months back (no digital in 2020???), so I ordered the first volume. It had been sitting on my shelves awaiting the right day, and I figured it would be a nice treat for my favorite day of the year. The story wasn't at all what I expected, being more of a mob story using a lineup straight out of early 20th century Universal monster flicks than one of horror and fantasy.

REmpnNH.jpg

Doctor Horror is from another planet, likely filled with other creepy monsters like himself, but a fight with some cosmic-horror-like, tentacled freaks forced him to flee to Earth. He somehow gets wrapped up in mob hits along the way. When the tentacles slither their way to our planet, the organized crime turf wars have their lines redrawn to for a larger-scale fight. I expected to be more entranced by the story of this monster mash, but it didn't do too much for me. I like seeing a bunch of creatures straight out of a costume party fight mobsters and inter-dimensional cephalopods as much as the next guy, but I suppose my expectations weren't in the right place. The dialogue is fun, but a little too quippy at times. My favorite interactions were with Doctor Horror's daughter, Halloween Girl, because her creepy powers and naivety make for a fun combination. The horror of the book is mostly surface level, utilizing all these monstrous visages. There are only a few moments where I thought it might lean more into the ooky spooky than it ultimately did. The story was serviceable, and the writing didn't upset me. It's competent, but not exactly exciting.

JESIqMZ.jpg

What is exciting is Brereton's art, and that's what we're here for. Hundreds of hand-painted panels, and they're all gorgeous. This must have taken forever to make, because no page looks rushed at all. I love the moody palette, and the designs for Polychrome and Halloween Girl (whose name is Evening Horror).
BEdTsOp.png
ZAXBaRj.png

If I had to say something critical, it would be that there's not a tone of variety in the facial expressions and that some of the action scenes feel a bit static, but I enjoyed looking at each and every page of this comic. The mood is executed skillfully, and it was just the treat I was looking for this Halloween.

Not very spooky, but it's the perfect (eye) candy to consume on Halloween. It's sorta obnoxious to track down more than a couple random, out of order volumes of Nocturnals, so I guess only check it out if you love the art enough to do a little work. Some of the stuff is out of print, though I've ordered some bigger collections that were surpringly reasonable in price. I guess I'll find out in the next week or so if they're worth it. While the story didn't grab me as much as I'd like, I enjoyed my time with the Nocturnals, and I look forward to seeing more of them soon.

Nocturnals: Black Planet (Dan Brereton, 1 vol.)
