what are everyone's favorite street-level non batman DC comics?
Technically not Batman, but Gotham Central is as street level as it gets at DC.

But currently, Lois Lane is really good, and theres a Lemire The Question Black Label book.
Also, I really like all of the Leviathan stuff Bendis has been doing in Action Comics. Its more about the Spy Agencies than Superman.

NYC
I thought about it and never mind I have more than zero

Green Arrow by Ben Percy
Green Arrow by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino
Plastic Man by Gail Simone (a mini)
Action Comics by Bendis

Lemire's Black Label The Question mini right now is really good
Rucka's Lois Lane
Other than that I'm drawing a blank. I liked Percy's Green Arrow Rebirth run for what that's worth.

Thanks! After all this heartbreaking space opera stuff with MTMTE I need some street level comics.

I finished Batman: Black and White (while I was banned)! My full experience with the book was very good. However, I'll admit that after my initial posts about it, which were extremely positive, the book's overall quality fell off quite a bit. It's not so surprising. The editors probably did everything they could to get as much talented as fast as possible, but then as the book went on, the book couldn't keep up that pace. I should clarify that this mostly refers to the writing. Artistically, the book was incredible from start to finish.

Batman: Black and White is a perfect test case for a writer. You get 7-9 pages to tell whatever Batman story you want. Some authors choose a story that represents them, some choose stories that best represent their ideal characterization of Batman, others smother the story in nostalgia for Batman's golden years, surprisingly many choose to do a basic ass story about Batman inhaling fear gas and seeing monsters but ultimately defeating Scarecrow through sheer willpower. Time after time though, it's the same talent we all know are outstanding regardless of what they're doing

I'm talking about Simonson, Gaiman, Sienkiewicz, Bolland, Dini, Ellis, etc. The legends. But then there are also folk who just seem to get Batman. Folk like Archie Goodwin, Dustin Nguyen, Mike Barr, and Bruce Timm. Just awesome pulpy stories that don't even need Batman to tell a definitive Batman story.

It's just so crazy cool to have all these wildly different storytellers come together and, despite wildly different takes on Batman himself, still somehow stay within this established idea of what Batman, Gotham, etc. are about. And that's why Batman: Black and White is so great. The variety may as well be an argument between these writers and artists -- no one seeing the same guy in a Batsuit. All these contrasting ideas and it's just pure Batman immersion. Great stuff.

Oh, Trees is technically 'complete'?

FAQ: there is no "rest of the story." TREES was always intended to be an anthology-like series. There are lots of TREES and the intent was always to wander the world and drop in on places and stories. Although I have ideas for, say, Vince in New York, or Jo Creasy, or Zhen, Book 2 can certainly stand as a conclusion to many people's personal stories, and, if there's ever a Book 4, it wouldn't necessarily pick anyone back up again.

That's a disappointing wrap-up.

Do you have the Newsletter?

I don't think there's anything in this week's newsletters. Just that old comment that could have been misconstrued a little.

This was in his Jan news letter.

I've spent the last several weeks filling up notebooks with new ideas. The inciting incident was a publisher friend very kindly inviting me to consider A Thing, but we both know that if DC literally can't pay people to draw my comics then this thing isn't gonna happen. I have had a genuinely delightful time coming up with new stuff, some of which will probably get cannibalised for other things in the future. Nothing's ever wasted. That's why we write it down.

Well, I guess we can all agree that he has gone too far with it. I stuck up for him because I didnt see anything that without a shadow of a doubt put him in that group. I mean, I always just assumed that he was trying to be the centrist, and wanted to please everyone, or rather not piss off anyone from one group. But its pretty clear that he doesnt want to denounce or condemn, which makes it pretty clear that he is a supporter, but was trying to hide it as much as possible.

Yes I still think his art is great. And yes hes a horrible writer, and an asshole. Just sucks to see someone you actually like shit on everything because of some shitty viewpoint or attitude. If you have to go out of your way to try and hide something like that, your clearly in the wrong.

I love how people have to go back and delete tons of tweets because they show just how shitty you are, but still dont acknowledge that they are wrong. Talking about that Catwoman writer, and everyone else who has had to do that.

Depends. Did you change your mind and that's why you deleted the tweets? 'Cause you realized they were stupid?

I finished East of West Year One and Year Two! Oh boy. I've got some criticisms.

So, I've got unclear feelings about East of West. But let's start strong. I like Death. I like the story of Death hunting down the Chosen for revenge. I like him searching for his wife and son. I like the other horsemen and the Chosen trying to ensure the end of the world while also not getting killed by Death. This story, however, is so overshadowed by everything else and the "everything else" just doesn't deserve the attention.

My criticisms start with the world that Hickman's built. From a skin-deep perspective, it's great. The alternate reality nations are all interesting visually. The confederacy, the union, new orleans, texas, PRA, and the endless nation. All have intriguing connections to American history -- mostly its worst bits. All of them building toward the apocalypse in small and large ways.

But the thing is, despite these obvious connections, Hickman doesn't really address them in any meaningful or complex manner. You've got the fucking confederacy, for fuck's sake. You've got chairman mao's fucking nation. A resurgent native american nation. And yet the politics of East of West aren't just shallow, they're actively escapist from the past. There's no meaningful commentary here. The Union is CORRUPT. The Texans are LAWLESS. The Endless Nation sees the immigrant nations as IMPURE. They're all just props and it's worse because of it.

Nevertheless, we spend most of our time dallying with these nations and their leaders. Hickman makes these interactions interesting page to page, naturally, but there's just so little storytelling between the words and gunshots. 29 issues in and the status quo has changed in no way. Texas has been laid waste to, but does that actaully mean anything in the story? Nope. The Texan chosen is still about. He's still got his ranger dude doing shit. Does it matter that the arrogant confederate has become president? Nope. Or that the union president has been shown to be a real piece of shit? NOPE. It's a lot of wheel-spinning. It's a lot of repeating character dynamics that are already well-established. It's about time to get to the point, Hickman.

Again, page to page East of West is a very entertaining read. The moments Hickman chooses to capture do draw you in. They are still very fun. It's a lot of wild west/transfuturism questioning as the world lights itself on fire. And Dragotta kills it every single page. But it's when you set the book down and ask what's happened, if the book is fulfilling the reason you're reading it in the first place, that it loses its glow. The fuck is Death even doing most of the time?

That's always been Hickman's problem.

He's got big ideas that don't say much of anything.

I can see the draw of appealing to comicgators cause 'bitter men over 35' is probably the safest comic buying audience

We dunked on America not for what it was attempting but for just how badly it was written. The dialog was so bad. That book was so disappointing given how much we all like America.
I had such high hopes for that book. Has anyone ever written her as well as Gillen?

When I worked retail a bunch of years ago, an old guy brought his tablet in for repair because he couldn't get it to work. So I go to try and turn it on, and it turns on fine for me.....and it's in the middle of a gay porn video, at which point the guy quickly grabs it back and is like "oh, uhh......"

Well I mean, she ain't wrong.

Yeah, all the characters I liked bought the farm early on and the book just never recovered for me.

I ain't reading all that. But I'll say I enjoyed East of West. It was solid, but it didn't blow my mind.

lol. Must have been a pop up or something. Those damn kids playing with his tablet!

My grandparents left to take the kids to a doctor's appointment, and when I went down stairs I could hear this moaning sound that was muffled, so I went and looked to see what it was. Hes got like 20+ tabs opened on his latop and half are hardcore porn just playing on a loop. At least he had headphones plugged in. But come on! Do that shit in your office or something away from the 6 year olds.

I dont know how to bring it up to him and tell him its getting out of hand.
