Thoughts and Prayers 2.0: Democratic Boogaloo... :/

I hate myself for making comparisons but, if the protest were in Venezuela, I'm completely sure that every US media will have covered by now extensively.

And for add salt to the wound... fucking CNN en Español come with this.

}

Fuck CNN En Español.

That hijo de ... needs to be locked in a cell and the key thrown to the garbage. Ladrón asesino.

At least I had to concede I was wrong about the CNN en Español interview. When a media isn't controlled by Uribe, we have things like this.

I didn't expect much but... I really hate this statement

The Democrats/Republicans in power always keep this attitude towards LatAm, meanwhile more than a handful of US citizens continue to think Latin Americans are migrating away from their homes just for fun. If the US really stood for liberty and democracy, LatAm policy would be a hell of a lot different.

For the mod who edited the number... At least inform yourself before show ignorance about the situation. The number was posted for the Colombian President in his Twitter...

That was on me. Given the nature of possible sensitive information made public and the risk for abuse/doxxing, I felt that it was initially best to remove the number in accordance with ERA's rules in an attempt to protect whom ever the number may belong to. At the moment, I wasn't able to verify where the number was coming from and the post didn't give enough information about it, so it was a quick decision.

Given that the number is not a personal number but a public, government number we have reverted the post to it's original state.

I apologize for the confusion, and thank you for clarifying what it was.

It's very fucked up :(

We had colombian residents and chilean supporters protesting in front of the embassy and the surroundings last night here, they were dispersed by police when barricades started

Manifestaciones en Providencia por represión policial en Colombia

Ciudadanos colombianos hicieron una velatón en las afueras del Consulado de Colombia. Luego, la manifestación se trasladó frente a la Biblioteca Municipal de Providencia.

Stay strong Colombia

Seeing what happened in Chile happen in more countries is so infuriating.
Especially because it seems is the new normal: people rise to face injustice -> government blames "marxists infiltrators" instead of actually solving the problem -> police show their true faces and start killing and beating their people.

And peaceful protests become useless because the cops themselves will escalate situations with violence or deceit.

Colombia's Prosecutor General says they are going to start expropriating truckers' vehicles who are participating in the National Strike:

And again cops are arming themselves in residential neighbours, using public schools as heliports:

This is a travesty and shit like this will continue to happen when the rich line their pockets while treating everyone else like serfs.
What can we do to help? international media is basically ignoring this, most major outlets are barely covering this, and the ones that do are basically saying this are COVID related protests... They are doing everyhting they can do minimize the slaugther going on. :(
I don't know. This was on front page of Yahoo, Monocle, and others. Don't even remember if Covid was mentioned besides making it harder to get work. I like to diversify my news so I run into a lot of world politics.

Today's Update:

www.theguardian.com

‘They can’t take it any more’: pandemic and poverty brew violent storm in Colombia

Demonstrations that began with a general strike on 28 April quickly descended into violence, with as many as 37 protesters killed across the country

This is god awful. The whole article hits very close to home and it's still absolute horror to imagine what is like right now. Police and Government isn't even minimaly concerned about keeping a smokescreen of being worried, they are just flat out massacring the colombian people :/

Now the government seems to be doing secret arrests. Specific numbers differ depending on who is reporting. And of course, the secret arrests come with beatings and sexual assault.

Alarming reports of disappearances and sexual violence against protesters in Colombia

The militarized response and police repression of mostly peaceful demonstrations continues
As of 6 May, the NGO Temblores has reported the violent death of 37 people, 1,708 cases of abusive use of force, 26 victims of eye injuries, 234 victims of physical violence and 934 arbitrary detentions against demonstrators. It also denounced that 11 people were victims of sexual violence. For its part, the Ombudsman's Office of Colombia sent out an alert about 87 people reported missing during the demonstrations, although this figure is due to be updated. As of 4 May, the Working Group on Forced Disappearances, formed by victims' organizations, documented 135 reports of possible forced disappearances. At least 28 of these persons have since been located.

The missing persons unit of Colombia's transitional justice system raised the alarm on Thursday that 379 participants in anti-government protests of the past week have gone missing.

The Missing Persons Search Unit that is part of a transitional justice system came to the alarmingly high number after cross-referencing the databases of some 26 organizations.

The number presented by the president of the search unit, Luz Marina Monzon, dwarfs the 38 missing persons allegedly registered with Prosecutor General's Office and the 87 reported by the Ombudsman's Office.

Rich people doing what they do best: Kill the poor.

Also the mediocre fascist responded:

"We condemned the blockages.
So indigenous people go back, or beware that the armed rich people might kill you"

And obviously the minga is now being called thieves by the police, no mention of the shootings against them:

You know, i had a coworker who's venezuelan, he came to Chile 3 or 4 years ago escaping his country leaving his wife and kids behind, he was capable of finding an stable job here to send money back to his family, then the estallido social happened on october 2019, we were working together and we ended up losing our jobs in march 2020 because of that + the pandemic, he kept working in this delivery jobs and finally in december 2020 he and his family moved to..... Colombia.

I hope he and his family are ok because that issue in Colombia is going to last a very long time.

It is disgusting, but it doesn't surprise me given the US Government stance over this.

When is Duque's government over? Oficially

His term ends next year. Uribe introduced that the president could run for reelection, but by now it is forbidden.

Oh wow now I can personally hate Republicans.

Fuck this bitch.
Pequeño Marco complains about the Cuban and Venezuelan governments, yet he is one of the staunchest supporters of dictators like his master Trump or Putin. Same with all Republicans.

Why would anyone want to move here? I guess I know why Venezuelans would, but anyone else? There are better countries without out of control covid, xenophobia and a trigger happy goverment.

That's the US for us...

The left wing boogieman. Truth is, there's no "right" and "left" wing over here. Everyone is more or less in the middle. It's just that Uribe-aligned politics are all authoritarian in nature.

A friend of mine is a judge, and is concerned that the next presidential election could be the last free one. I tend to believe him.

Sadly for all of us in Latam, migrating within our continent is like switching rooms in the Titanic. We are all fucked in different levels and for different reasons, or will be at any given time.

Other than Venezuela, no other country is as close to having a dictator as we are.

On different levels, but El Salvador, and we in Chile are quite fucked too, with elections coming with a high sense of uncertainty on its outcome (a populist is leading the presidential polls, even). Bolivia had a year under a failed coup with several dead people, and Ecuador in 2019 faced a similar debacle (ultimately feeling betrayed by Moreno and electing a right winger, sigh). Not to mention Bolsonaro's Brazil.

I really feel in my heart how Colombia must be right now, because, unlike others, Duque doesn't even seem to care about the international community will react (specially having full support of the non-Trump US), so yeah, on different levels, but I won't deny how terrible the Colombian situation looks even from the outside.

and migrating to europe, canada,US etc (unless you go ilegal and you know someone there) its very hard for most people and extremely expensive
but thats normal for most countries if a government is allied with US, it gets a lot of resistance for that to get on any newspaper and for usa and allies to do anything.

The Right is the worst. Honestly in every country. Slaughtering civilians to protect the wealthy is their modus operandi. I will never give them any quarter.

Some days I wish there was a true international socialist solidarity movement to help combat this and give support to these civilians protests.

Does Columbia have any sort of socialist opposition?
