Washington (CNN)Voting experts and political strategists from across the political spectrum are increasingly alarmed about the potential for a disputed presidential election in November, one in which one candidate openly questions the legitimacy of the results or even refuses to concede.

These experts are keenly aware of President Donald Trump's well-documented history of lying about voter fraud and claiming that elections were "rigged" when he doesn't like the outcome. They also see a Democratic base that is still burned from 2016, when its nominee was dragged down in part by Russian meddling operation, won the popular vote, and lost to Trump.

Interviews with nearly 20 election experts, former lawmakers, political strategists, legal scholars and historians indicate there are widespread fears of a nightmare scenario in November, where Trump's norm-breaking behavior -- coupled with the unprecedented challenges of pandemic-era voting -- test the limits of American democracy and plunge the country into a constitutional crisis.

'Things could get very ugly': Experts fear post-election crisis as Trump sets the stage to dispute the results in November

Are you worried, Era?

I think that goes without saying. Its going to be a real ugly scene after the election regardless of the outcome.

If Trump loses he will throw a huge tantrum for sure. He will still have to leave. Nothing to worry about.

Part of me is concerned about how it'll play out.

Part of me thinks that Trump will secretly be relieved that he can go and play golf lots more, and not have to deal with criticism constantly.

Army already sided with Biden on this. Biden wouldn't put out that statement if he didn't have intel.

I'm honestly more worried about the lame duck period after he concedes. He's gonna try to push through as much bullshit as possible while giving a blind eye to the far-right violence that is doubtlessly going to crop up.

I am not worried, but I am not blind to the possibility of a horrible situation.

That said, if Trump loses it doesn't really matter if he concedes or not. Come January Biden would be President regardless, and with that all of the powers of the presidency. The military leadership would probably not side with Trump and he'd be removed from office physically if necessary.

I don't think it will come to that, I think he will grumble and complain and leave in January whilst tweeting about how the election was rigged and yada yada yada.

The only thing that would worry me is the electoral college going rogue in the event of a trump election loss.

I don't care about his bitching about laws anymore. He does that everyday.

The only thing possibly safeguarding against Trump not conceding is the fact that he hates his job and wants to go back to being a businessman full-time.

That said, I am well aware of the size of his ego.

Trump talks big on twitter but I think when he loses he won't concede but he'll just disappear for awhile and then show up on fox news or onn with his own show.

Yeah he's gonna go all out "the country didn't vote for me so why should I do anything to help the country?" toddler mode during those two months.

Once he loses, his Republican bootlickers will turn on him so fast that he will have no power or support to get anything done. They will all start to act like "we should have known better" and grovel to the Biden administration.

CNN fear mongering again. Trump will bitch and moan and then leave but not before pardoning a bunch of scumbags.

The military turned on him when he did his church photo op. He won't be able to do shit.

There was some Doomsday article I read where Trump calls into question specific state's results, they can't be legally verified before the electors vote, neither candidate gets to 270 EV's, and there's some tiebreaker bullshit that could allow Trump to win. I'm not sure how viable that scenario was but it worries me more than him just refusing to leave.

I am not a violent person but if he tried anything like this, I would support armed insurrection and/or civil war. It would be the end of America if it was allowed.

Yeah, exactly. CNN is trying to stir shit up with this kind of reporting.

I'm honestly more worried about the lame duck period after he concedes. He's gonna try to push through as much bullshit as possible while giving a blind eye to the far-right violence that is doubtlessly going to crop up.

This is a more legitimate concern, in my eyes.

Even if Trump does concede the race, the fear and pessimistic expectation among Democrats is Trump and his Administration will refuse to engage in the transition process prior administrations have done to ensure a smooth hand-over of power. Worst case scenario will be the Trump admin activity try to sabotage the transition as a final "FUCK YOU" to Biden:

www.politico.com

Democrats are already bracing for a ‘hostile’ Trump transition

They’re not measuring any drapes. But Democrats fear Trump and his aides won’t meet, share documents or otherwise cooperate in a handover of power.

Unless the army is willing to seize control of the government for Trump's sake, I don't think this is really an issue. I'd be more concerned about what kind of last minute executive orders he throws out to cause chaos during his lame duck period.

Not worried about Trump is what everyone else that blindly throws their support behind them that I worry about. What message are they going to put out after a Trump defeat? More of the same and push even further right or start reeling this madness in? Even if they did the latter, It might just ring hollow from people who were fully on the Trump train.

Didn't the SCOTUS nip that in the bud? They said electors have to follow the popular vote of the state

Who's got time to worry about what's going to happen in December and January when there's so much to worry about now?

No doubt it will be the rockiest presidential transition in US history, but that isn't saying much

If he and half the country don't recognize the outcome as legitimate, there is a lot to worry about.

If he and half the country don't recognize the outcome as legitimate, the constitution is still very clear that Biden will be president in January and it doesn't matter what Trump thinks at that point. His powers as president disolve in January regardless of his recognition of the results. Biden wouldn't just sit there and allow that to happen, and he and his new administration would utilize all of the powers of his office, and the military, to remove Trump.

I'm sure military leadership can't wait for this guy to be gone. They aren't backing a coup in any real numbers to matter.

Trump seems like the type of guy that would dox government officials that opposed him or leak other government secrets if he loses.

Trump will be escorted out of the White House by the military if needed. However the country today is as divided as I have seen it in my lifetime.
