Even with its lack of new Marvel/Star Wars content, looks like Disney Plus is doing quite well.

Not surprised that the bundle isn't, who really wants the ESPN+ (it looks great for MLS fans).

Credit Suisse expects Disney+ to pull in 20 million subscribers before the end of the year as app downloads level out after a post-launch frenzy and total subscriptions beat expectations.

Analysts at the firm previously expected Disney's new streaming service to finish the year with 14.3 million subscribers.

Despite launching with some technical errors, Disney reported 10 million Disney+ sign-ups one day after launch, sending the stock up 7.35%. Disney also partnered with Verizon before the launch to offer Verizon customers a free year of Disney+. The company has not reported subscriber numbers since the initial report.

Verizon, I suspect, is a big part of that and also a good idea. Get people hooked and then keep them with a low price for something they're used to having.

Mandalorian is their biggest show, I suspect, so I think the "lack of Star Wars" comment is probably not 100% accurate.

Having almost everything Disney related streaming in 4K makes me want to dump my BD/DVD collection now.

But that damn buffering drives me bonkers.

I'm guessing its big with families as well? I'd assume parents want it for their kids if nothing else.

Tbh, I've been pretty disappointed so far.

I'll keep it until mandalorian is over and then drop it.

The way I look at it:

$7 a month is cheaper than $24 per 4K BD disc I buy for MCU/SW/Pixar movies.

Until the Disney Cinematic Multiverse slows down, it's a deal for me.

That number seems low tbh. I know they just started, but endgame and the mandalorian were supposed to make everyone and their dogs to subscribe.
At the end Disney is not a service for me, but I'd get it if cheap offered with ESPN+.

I would not be keeping it if I didn't get a free year. Totally barebones. 3 more weeks of Mandalorian and I doubt I'll touch it again until next summer.

Not surprised. The sub is relatively affordable as a good complement to Netflix. I bet it'll drop though if they ever decide to enforce the no-sharing policy. My family share a sub across 2 states.

Once The Mandalorian is over, that number will probably dip back down to 15 million.

I am honestly astounded by how little original content they launched D+ with.

I mean hulu and prime video only have 25 milli, it's barely a month old and posed to become the number 2 subscription service in numbers

Im not really a Disney fan but Im not subbing to their service until they combine all their content on one platform. I definitely have interest in Fox stuff but Im not subbing to Hulu just for that.

I have it, but will be cancelling as soon as the Imagineering show if finished. The service is otherwise too too bland and static for me, and the upcoming Marvel shows hold zero appeal

I'm only there for The Mandalorian for now. That'll change when further Star Wars content arrives. (And maybe Falcon & The Winter Soldier. I don't care much for the MCU but their side of the story is solid.)

And at this point I've accepted that The Mandalorian, at least for its first season, really is not going to be a classic. Fantastic production values aside, it's fairly uneven. I'm a fan, but I still find myself rewatching The Expanse and Star Trek shows more frequently.

Once I get a new Apple TV I'm getting that 7 day trial and watching whatever I can. (My current model doesn't have it.)

Look how Baby Yoda has been in the spotlight over the last few weeks; imagine if they had just dumped out all the episodes instead. Disney made the right move here.

20 million in a couple of months is low? Don't see how anyone could come to that conclusion.

I can't believe there isn't a single thing on there that interests me. Proper 4:3 Simpsons would do it, but mostly this seems ripe for a younger audience.

Good for D+. Nice numbers. Of course the promos play the main role in the numbers exceeding expectations; will be interesting to see the retention after they lapse.

Gotta work on their original content and some new IP's though. It will always remain a niche service considering its lack of more mature content compared to the big players in Netflix, Prime and HBO Max but it really is bare bones at the moment.

Especially when you compare it to the deluge of high quality content Netflix has been pumping out in this final quarter.

Huh? It took Netflix five years to get to 20 million.

Arm chair analysts out here have no idea how anything works.

20 million people that don't know anything about hockey will watch Mighty Ducks 2 and assume Iceland is a powerhouse. God damn it movie, couldn't it have been Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Canada? US had a god damn free ride in that movie, and they even allowed a goal to Trinidad Tobago!

Don't me wrong, Stansson's a great villain, but he was just a goon in the NHL. Gordon could have been a star but he got hurt!

I'm trying it out and think it's a service incredibly light on content old and new, I think Hulu+Disney as a single app together as that would have made the service much more appealing. Hard to say if it's going to show even greater growth if they don't really add much more even as a huge disney fan and will probably be turning subscriptions on and off frequently on a monthly basis rather than yearly.

This thing has been an absolute smash hit and even better then my really optimistic take (I thought it would land close to 15 million by years end). I'm really happy I went all in back in May when the stock dipped below $100. Because growth wise it's my best stock of the year.

Hulu and Netflix had to built a platform, and none had the biggest grossing movie ever to show. Disney is given for free if you have a contract with a cable company, and besides that those companies are not Disney. Disney has an instand catalog that beats most of what all other services combined can offer. I wasnt expecting 100mill, but the adoption rate seems slow to me. Now I am not an investor, that just my take, maybe wrong, but that just how I see it. And their are launching on their biggest market already.

I'm on it with Verizon. I'm going to try to watch all 30 seasons of the Simpsons and then I'll make sure I unsub before the free period expires.

It's okay if you want PG-13 content and lower for your kids, but the overall content is too bland and static to appeal to most adults for any length of time. But I give them props for running a good promotional campaign.

I got it through verizon with new internet service. Only thing I wanna watch on it is That's So Raven. Rest of the content is underwhelming.

not when it's geolocked.

I thought I'd subscribe to D+ last weekend and start catching up on all the Star Wars stuff I had ignored up to this point and perhaps get myself interested in seeing the next one in theaters. But nope, it's still arbitrarily geolocked for me in Europe. And they even removed the SW films from Netflix in what I assume was anticipation for D+ exclusivity.

This aggravated me enough that I don't feel like signing up for the service at all now even when it does become available. Pop culture is more globalized than ever before, yet you as a consumer are apparently still expected to be treated as second class if you don't live in the US.

No fucking wonder piracy rates for The Mandalorian are sky high.

Really the only service that could threaten Netflix due to how they dominate not only the US but the whole world. Only Disney IPs can keep up with that. Though 20 mill in only a few months is pretty damn fast.

I couldn't get the service through my Verizon plan, but I've used it through my friends plan. Not very impressed with the service, given how The Simpsons has a terrible aspect ratio, and the old Marvel cartoons are fairly blurry. Outside of the Mandalorian, I wouldn't subscribe to the service.

I don't see how they keep up interest, once the wave of nostalgia passed I pretty much just open it to watch the Mandalorian

Am I the only one that experiences really poor streaming with Disney Plus through the PS4? I rarely have any problems with Netflix or Hulu, but the Mandalorian has been extremely difficult to get through because it constantly stutters, buffers, and gets out of sync.

And even when I'm watching Lo-Fi content like classic Simpsons on my computer, the episode "watched" history is very sketchy. It misses entire groups of episodes I've watched.

It feels like Beta software.

That's great, I'm a big marvel fan so I wish it would've released with Falcon and Winter Soldier or some MCU show but it's been great so far with Mandalorian and other shows I used to watch.
