I hope fans can mod it so ill just wait i guess.
after seeing that cgi cutscene for a mobile fucking game that no one plays.. this is just a slap in the face...

The mobile game is actually quite fun and doesn't require any gatcha to get through the main story. It's pretty much a spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger.

Downloaded on ps5, but gotta go to work. I'll dive in after and look up some guides to get the characters I want. Looking forward to playing this one.

I kinda like the Van Gogh style impressionistic way the backgrounds look almost watercolor now. The CG videos look much better than the pixelated compressed mess you're looking at if you play the original on a modern display. Framerate seemed identical or slightly better than the original in 30 minutes of Switch playtime last night.

I really wish I had known there was no save feature in Radical Dreamers before I started it.

Oh this sucks looks like I just had a weird bug where the menu wouldn't open to let me save just lost 2 hours of progress in Radical dreamers
I have 3 saves in Radical Dreamers. Hit Y on an Xbox pad, so probably triangle on a PS pad.

What a fantastic OT, well done Nairume! I have the game preloaded on my Switch, can't wait to start it once I'm home from work.

I got the pink doggie the first time and god SUPER confused if they weren't a weird joke character of some kind (IIRC she even "thpeaks like this!").
I love Poshul! I will also never use Poshul outside of the first hour when there aren't any other characters. Po-shu-shu!

Framerate is all over the place. In battles, it ranges anywhere between what feels like 20-60fps. Will no doubt be the same on other systems though as this clearly isn't a hardware issue.
That's exactly how it is on the PS1. I doubt this will be improved at all, ever.

This is the reason for the bad remaster:

"It is at least typically easier to port original PlayStation games than PlayStation 2 titles (the chip inside the PS2 is really unique, and difficult to emulate well), but we faced an additional challenge when it came to Chrono Cross, as the game program and graphical data weren't preserved in a complete form."

This remaster is good, I think your reaction is overblown for the sake of it but them putting the effort to bring it out on more platforms is a positive.

I played this game shortly after release and never finished it so I figured I'd go for it now. How easy is it to miss stuff in this game, I feel like with the cast of characters it's easy to miss a lot of side content without a guide, is that actually the case? Also I remember at the time being confused slightly by the battle system and all of that, does somebody have a decent primer that explains it maybe a little clearer?

I'm not at home to DEF confirm right now, but in my experience the borders can't be turned off. You have some graphics options which do change them:
  • In 'normal' view you see borders on the side and a tiny border on the top (and bottom?)
  • In 'zoomed' view the borders at the top and bottom are gone and the borders on the side are smaller. These may also be black/darker
  • In 'full' view, the image is stretched. Here there are no borders but it looks like crap.
I play on zoomed mode myself.

You will 100% miss stuff on an initial playthrough, by design. Don't worry about it though, just have fun!

As for a battle primer there is a couple blog entries here from a person well versed in it's design: http://www.doctorshrugs.com/blog/chrono-cross-pt-1/?msclkid=e2440882b67711ec993c9617dd828740

Like LastDancer Said, you're most definitely gonna miss 'something' on your first playthrough, regardless of what you do. I'd recommend just enjoying it as it is then using a guide if you're so inclined on a subsequent playthrough. CC itself isn't particularly long as it is, imo especially with them giving speedup by default instead of in NG+, and even without finding 'secret' characters and such, the game gives you a good amount of characters AND the overworld is pretty compact as well.

The Switch version got an update patch shortly before launch that seems to have improved performance from what Switch-based reviewers experienced beforehand.

I can't speak firsthand on this one since my review copy is for PS4. But I saw a clip of a Switch reviewer's progress on the game during embargo that looked worse than what I was dealing with at the time. The reviewer in question took a quick vid of their experience after the patch, and it definitely seems to have improved somewhat.

Do you know what the "surprise" is if you beat both games?

Yes, I do.

Once you've cleared both Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers at least once, sit through the (considerable!) length of credits from the main menu screen. At the end, and mind you it's all text-based so don't expect anything visually splashy, you'll get dialogue from Guile reflecting on battling the Time Devourer with Serge and Kid. I'm not gonna go into details because I think it's cool and y'all should experience it for yourselves, but the twist here is that Guile has been, well, inducted into canon as Magus after all.

Say hearing about borders, wouldn't that mean that it could potentially degrade the OLED Switch's screen unevenly?

The borders not being changable has me pretty concerned for my OLED. Do not like!

I'm doing my first playthrough with no guide to get the OG experience, but I still want to know. I'm aware you will miss stuff on a first run, but there's nothing as bad as "Miss this and you're locked to a bad ending"?

Right. There is a "bad" ending, but you never get locked into it. You can always go back and do the things needed for the good ending.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition – Remastering a classic

Producer Koichiro Sakamoto reveals the exciting challenges of remastering and enhancing the classic PlayStation RPG.

wtf is up with SE lol they make fucking millions from these games in the past and they cant seem to keep the OG raw data files from any of their games that made them what they are now...

-___-
It's a very difficult task. We used AI to help to sharpen the images, but that's not perfect – everything still comes down to having manual processes or the "human touch" to make sure it all looked appropriate.

The backgrounds you see in the final release is the result of a lot of effort from the team – something I'm very grateful to them for.

Oh, Harle doesn't have her faux-french accent? Did none of the accented dialogue carry over into this new version? That's going to mess with my memories all right.

But, I got used to the new Frog... I can handle this. Maybe.

I played it for about an hour last night, I can't express how disappointed I was in how shitty this remaster feels. The framerate is just bizarre.
