Assuming he's getting residuals. He likely got his check already, so not buying the games wouldn't hurt him.
I'd want proper confirmation that he is not going to be paid from the sales of the upcoming games.

Yup, last few years have shown him up as being pretty terrible.
Warren Ellis and now this. Two writers whose work I adored, and all they've managed to do is be lecherous fucking creeps. Utterly fucking despicable.
Nobody outside of the most senior of senior producer / director roles get residuals, and at many studios even they don't get any. There's no chance. Consultants are paid hourly and sometimes a bonus on delivery, it's all long in the past.
So fuck everyone who worked on the game to fuck one guy who works on the game on contract....so hes already got his money.

Why do you think I asked for confirmation that he won't be paid at all from sales before I can say I am ok with paying for these upcoming games? And being uncomfortable about it doesn't mean the intent is to specifically "fuck over" others on the teams. Just seems like an unnecessarily aggressive response.
Let's be real, if we get no confirmation one way or another there are much worse sacrifices that could be made than the bottom lines of a few game companies. Taking a hard stance against abusers, especially in this industry, is important. The post you're replying to seems like pearl clutching.
Or maybe "I don't want to support a game worked on by a known abuser" is the very valid thing that they're trying to say? Like, that's no different than me refusing to buy Cyberpunk because of the anti-trans sentiments constantly shared by that studio. Boiling it down to "Fuck all these people just to fuck this one guys" is basically the same as giving the fucker a pass.
I won't begrudge anyone who still does play them, but not wanting to play them because of a big name's toxicity is perfectly valid.
Right? They're just entertainment products at the end of the day compared to the suffering that his victims had to go through, I care more about them. I can't imagine how they might feel if Chris Avellone gets brought up with the release of those upcoming games, how triggering that must be.

Couldn't have said it better. They're electronic toys, and if a hit to the bottom line of a company that worked with an abuser makes people think twice then that's great, not because I think any of these companies knew ahead of time or anything but because I believe it's the only way to grow and nurture the industry away from shit like that. You see people outed as abusers, misogynists, racists, all these things going back to work after a year of silence like nothing ever happened. It keeps popping up as a plague in this industry itself and it isn't going to stop unless these behaviors become a real financial liability. For that reason, I'm cool with this hurting some innocent money in the same way I'm fine with recent protests causing property damage in my current hometown. There's more on the line.
I never really trusted Chris Avellone 'cause I heard he was closely tied to RPG Codex, which I'd also heard was a haven for white supremacists.
He worked on Fallout, Baldurs Gate, Planescape, KOTOR, Pillars of Eternity... bizarre.
No one is entitled a sale though.
If people want to buy the games despite the behaviour of some of the people working on it, that's their choice.
And if people want to boycott a game for the same reason, that's their choice too.

Welcome to reality of our current system, where nearly every time you want to oppose something, you gonna be affecting a "living shield" of innocent people with a job. Do not for a second think this is just an accident that just happens to be convenient for the powerful. System has always cultivated the greatest securities for those at the top, while having minimal if any consideration for those with little voice to protest.
As to what is the best decision to make when taking this into consideration, there isn't a unified answer. For me for example, answer will vary wildly depending on each case.
Also, it never ceases to amaze me just how many of people in any sort of position of "power" even relatively insignificant social power as "popular writer" (if you comprae them to execs and politicians that is) resort to this. Like part of it is just reflective of how much of this kind of attitude is permeated in society at large, but even taking that into account it really feels like they have larger than "normal" percentage of creeps.
It's like a chicken and an egg situation, is it influence getting to their head, or is it this kind of toxic ego that made them more likely to become influential to begin with.

Does it matter though? Those companies who hired him on a contract were aware what kind of person he was, so to me they don't get a pass.
Years and years of being part of an industry that's been male dominated. It's as simple as that. Whenever one type of person dominates an environment, the worst examples of that kind of person are allowed free rein. Most men in gaming are decent people, but you just can't have an environment with predominantly male voices in power, without it allowing these pieces of shit to flourish. See also... Hollywood.
As a long time fan, his arc over the past few years has just been so depressing to watch. This isn't really sudden, he's been self-immolating for a while now. Obviously the well being of the women he's wronged comes first, but I really do hope he gets the help he needs too.

Now that he got caught he's acting fuckin' mental on Twitter. You don't hurt others and then get to play the "poor me" card. You were judged rightly.
