Chapo Trap House is a "political" "comedy" podcast that examines American and global issues from a leftist/socialist perspective. They also like to make fun of terrible political figures, media people, people who write op-eds, shitty movies, and a variety of other assorted topics.

MAY I SPEAK TO MR. CHAPO PLEASE:

The primary cast of characters are played by a set of well-known Disco Elysium voice actors:

Will Menaker: His fursona is a capybara.
Matt Christman: A man in a giant child's body.
Felix Biederman: Gamer. Poster. Gym rat. Honorary member of FaZE clan.
Virgil Texas: Nerdy Harry Potter-looking dude, if Harry Potter had an actual belief system.
Amber A'Lee Frost: Amber.

The Chapo cast between takes. From left to right: Virgil Texas, Will Menaker, Amber A'Lee Frost, Matt Christman, Felix Biederman

They release episodes once a week on Soundcloud, with an additional episode each week being Patreon-exclusive and definitely not available anywhere else on the internet, such as Reddit. They are notable for being the most-donated account on Patreon, which means they are actually wealthy bourgeois and you should not listen to them.

Chapo Trap House should not be confused with Citations Needed, which is the podcast you bring home to mom and dad when they ask you what Chapo is.

Finally, they also authored a book, The Chapo Guide to Revolution: A Manifesto Against Logic, Facts, and Reason, which Politico once called "the stupidest book ever written about socialism."

Assorted clips

An important reminder about how centrist liberalism will lead to fascism:

The famous post-2016 election episode:

On Jordan Peterson
Reviewing Ben Shapiro's novel
Encountering Jacob Wohl at CPAC
On Joe Biden

Feel free to use this thread to discuss both the podcast and any adjacent political or social issues. In this thread we are all free to embrace our inner Jokerized selves, just like the protagonist of the popular 2019 film, "Joker."

I'm a communist that's never listened to a single episode of Chapo.

Where do I start?

I've only heard clips, mostly of Matt Christman, and only a few. I'll have to check this podcast out.

so, the thing about chapo trap house is that it's a political podcast that is generally best when it's not really talking about politics

like, most of the best bits are just comedy spun out of some ridiculous politics-adjacent thing that has happened, like gorka above, or every time they talk about an awful op-ed writer. because like... sometimes you forget just how incredibly weird some of these people are, or how bad their takes are

my personal favorite is probably rod dreher, who is just a profoundly weird person:

My favorite Rod Dreher one is this very real story that happened at a very real movie theater (TW: transphobia from an op-ed).

I think Chapo is bad, but I will also agree they can strike gold when they avoid politics. I am obligated to always post this because it's the best thing Chapo will ever do to me, dunking on Ben Shapiro's novel:

Yeah, their takes are generally good to not really great, but they are very good at dunking on conservatives. Kind of like an edgier, further left Daily Show. The comic strip bit always gets me.

That said, Amber fucking blows and her not getting kicked the fuck off is not a good look for them at all. I'm glad that OP glossed over her as best as possible.

Chapo can definitely be problematic in ways I don't necessarily approve of and there are probably better leftist podcasts out there for me to listen to, but they're kind of comfort food and consistently entertaining. Their Twitter game is ace too. As everyone else has said though Amber sucks.

Amber is...okay. She has a big galaxy brain that frequently produces dumb takes, but also sometimes decent takes.

i think amber has gradually gotten better, to be fair

Shots out to Matt for reading the most theory and having by far and away the best third eye vision.

Felix's impression game is clearly unmatched tho

I'd be lying if I denied that hearing their first few episodes back in 2016, right around the time I got hit with a layoff and some friends were introducing me to some leftism 101 stuff, wasn't impactful to me. Right place right time. Generally pretty hilarious, and Matt probably has the best takes.

Amber's worst takes from the past few years are really bad but maybe yeah

Pretty low bar for "okay" imo, especially for someone who you have to voluntarily listen to.

Never listened to this show. But what did she do?
This reddit post summarized the most notable bullshit pretty well (the Spiked interview). There's plenty of other bullshit too, but I've forgetten about it tbh because I try not to give her that much of my mental real estate. She's not a prominent voice on the podcast anyway thankfully.

felix is the best chapo

true, she's still by far the worst part of chapo

She's not a prominent voice on the podcast anyway thankfully.

this too

also, red scare is fucking terrible for anyone wondering. the fact that amber's their only somewhat-relevant connection to the leftist podcast/content universe post-cumtown drama says it all lol

I'm not a gigantic fan, though I've listened to a significant amount of their stuff at this point, but I did see them live a year ago (because of my father actually - he's a boomer and he's cooler than me!). Virgil Texas is legitimately some kind of savant, no joke.

Considering members of this podcast have engaged in ableist, sexist, and homophobic rhetoric, and that the podcast's reddit community has been quarantined, we've decided that hosting an OT on them is not something we want to do.
