A group of centrist House Democrats, sick of political posturing, is pressing Speaker Nancy Pelosi to counter Trump's immigration proposal with her own potential compromise. The group, led by freshman Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia, is asking the California Democrat to offer Trump a vote on his border wall or some sort of negotiated security package in February if he first signs a bill reopening the federal government, according to a draft of the letter obtained by POLITICO.
Centrist House Democrats are reportedly pressing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to counter President Donald Trump's immigration proposal with her own potential compromise to end the partial government shutdown — saying it is "our job to fix it."
In a draft copy of a letter obtained by Politico, the group, led by Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va., is asking Pelosi to offer Trump a vote on his border wall sometime in February if he signs a bill reopening the federal government.
"We understand that this shutdown was not caused by the 116th Congress, but it is our job to fix it," the letter reads.

Why is it "our job" to fix every manufactured crisis Trump and Co carry stillborn over the finish line?

Fuck that, don't negotiate with someone that took the government hostage. Dems don't owe that sack of shit "president" anything.

yikes, the Dems are going to cave

Hopefully not. Also from the article:

It is unclear how many Democrats have signed on to the letter, but multiple senior Democratic aides downplayed the draft missive, suggesting their party is sticking together in a vow not to negotiate until after the shutdown is over. Trump has already panned a similar proposlal by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of his top allies in the upper chamber.

"We agree. The first step is to re-open government," said Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill, emphasizing their similarities, not their differences. Pelosi told Trump this month that she would not fund the border wall even after the government reopened, causing the president to walk out of their last meeting.

However, the letter, being circulated among some lawmakers from red or swing districts, illustrates the pressure they are under to end the shutdown. Pelosi and Schumer have argued that giving in to Trump's desires would be rewarding "bad behavior" or "hostage taking." But some Democrats are starting to question that strategy.

"Give Trump the money," Rep. Collin Peterson, a centrist Democrat from a red Minnesota district, told a local radio station Tuesday. "I'd give him the whole thing…and put strings on it so you make sure he puts the wall where it needs to be. Why are we fighting over this? We're going to build that wall anyway, at some time."
Peterson and Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) wrote to congressional leaders and Trump on Tuesday, calling on them to "end the brinkmanship," reopen the government and make a "good faith" effort on border security.

Later this week the House will vote on more bills to reopen the government.

Friendly reminder to call your reps and back them up and tell them to hold tight: Call (202)224-3121 for the Congressional Switchboard or use www.5calls.org (includes contact info and sample scripts if needed).

Calling works and takes 5 minutes — can't stress this enough.

People need to read the op.

This is a small amount of Dems pushing for a vote, that everyone knows won't pass. That's it, nobody's caving.

The only way out is a compromise.

But who knows, both sides probably think this shutdown is good for their political chances in 2020.

I can kinda understand the urge to end the shutdown. I mean, real people are suffering and not getting paid atm. Real contracting businesses are gonna go under if this keeps up.

On the other hand, politically, the public opinion squarely places the blame on Trump, so....

The only way out is a compromise.

But who knows, both sides probably think this shutdown is good for their political chances in 2020.

The government being opened should not be used for negotiation.

Read the damn article.

They're saying they'll consider the wall after the government reopens... which has always been Pelosi's position.

Hint: anything with wall funding will fail in the House, especially after the government reopens.

Democrats can play the Moderate Darling game and portray themselves as ~~~bipartisan problem solvers~~~ too even if they're still voting the party line. And on this, they're still voting the party line.
And they wonder why Latinos like me hate the current Democratic Party. No backbone.
Yes, we have so little backbone that we've held steady for over a month and are still doing so now if you actually read the letter.

This is what the GOP and Trump are counting on. This is how they win. And they will keep using this new shutdown weapon again and again if you prove it effective. Also why you don't give in to terrorists. If the Dems give in, the Federal US system of government will be fully broken from here on. They cannot compromise on this.

Honestly, offering a vote on the wall just to vote it down sounds like a good deal to me.
Exactly.

This group is saying the same thing we've been saying: reopen the government and remove the hostages. The only difference is they're trying to look ~~~bipartisan~~~ by offering a wall vote in the House after the government reopens.

Spoiler: it would never pass. It's theater to shore up their Moderate Darling credentials in swing districts.

But Politico loves to create DEMS IN DISARRAY narratives even where none exist.

Tweaked the thread title to clarify what the compromise would entail.

I'm stuck on why Trump would even accept the idea of waiting to February for a vote at all. Why would he not just say no?

It's our job to fix it? What kind of fuckery... Why is it our job to fix what they deliberately broke because they didn't get their way?!

Since 90% of you aren't gonna bother reading the letter here's what they're asking for:

acQL4ij.png

So basically:

1a. Open the government before we begin any negotiations. - This is the current position of the democratic leadership and what Trump refuses to budge on.
1b. Let us see the plans for the wall (there are no concrete plans or we would have seen them by now) and let us vote on it (it will fail, if the plan & justification for it continues to be "give us money so I can say work has started on it").
2. Let us vote on it before March. - Let them vote, the wall will fail in the house.
3. Let us offer amendments to the bill. - They can add whatever they want, again it will fail. If the wall remains, the house will reject it and if they add DACA, TPS, & DED protections to soften the blow the senate or trump will reject it.

All of this is political cover for conservative Dems to say they tried to work with the president but he was unreasonable. It is not Dems caving or compromising, cause their position all along has been open the government and then we can talk.

ITT: People not reading.

Anyways, this is a bunch of nothing. The article mentions one Rep from Virginia and the draft of the note has no names attached to it. No specific mention of how many and who is in this supposed group.

They're not "caving", either, but it ain't gonna stop all these hot takes. Move along.

I mean... isn't this EXACTLY what they've been aiming for from the start? Which is open the government now, hold a vote on 'border security' later? Which is why Trump and Co don't want to agree with it because they know they'll reopen the government and still not get the wall stuff later (because it's right out of their playbook from DACA)

They're basically offering nothing besides a vote for the wall (which they will vote no against and as a majority stop it!). Yet we're "compromising" by....getting everything we want and giving them nothing in return. But people are freaking out because they want to "own the pubs"?

Did half this thread not actually read the link or comprehend what the Dems are "offering"? Too busy knee jerk reacting to "omg compromise!!!!" instead of..well, reading what was offered?

He won't to the first question & he will to the second. This is just theater for conservative Dems so they can say to their constituents that they went against the crazy liberal Nancy Pelosi to work with the President but he rejected their reasonable offer.

So how does the shutdown realistically end? Trump declares it a national emergency if he can? That way whether any building actually happens or not Trump can say he did what he could.

I just don't see anybody budging any other way.

Wall OR other security packages I think that's a key part missing from the thread title, Congress has been putting funds towards border security for years. Additional funds for border security for DACA protections

Thanks, the way worded now is much better. I swear people sometimes make headlines more controversial than it needs to be.
