It is and is not a COVID thing though... Asian communities have a history of being victimized during crime waves because of stereotypes of language barrier (less easy for them to be able to communicate to cops, etc.), perceived wealth/amount of cash carried, and perceived lack of resistance.

COVID is causing crime to rise across the country due to economic hardship, and the "China virus" rhetoric doesn't help but its not the only reason... This racism and prejudice has always been there but non-Asians are only starting to notice now.

It wasn't my intention to imply it's exclusively a COVID thing, sorry for being confusing. It's just that whenever something negative happens and if it even had hint of foreign origin, there is always an increase of violence/bullshit against people who happen to even resemble that race.

Like being Asian during WWII

Or Looking even slightly Iranian after 9/11

It's been happening for a long ass time and it never fails to piss me off.

9 Asian-Owned Businesses Have Their Windows Smashed in the Last 2 Weeks in Oregon

Many Asian-owned businesses in Portland, Oregon were vandalized and had windows smashed. In the last week of January, 13 businesses in the Jade District of East Portland were vandalized, according to Williamette Week.

9 Asian-Owned Businesses Have Their Windows Smashed in the Last 2 Weeks in Oregon

9 of 13 vandalized in the Portland.

per https://www.wweek.com/news/city/202...ave-of-vandalism-hits-asian-owned-businesses/:

The broken windows occurred shortly after two alleged bias crimes targeting Asians and Muslims, as WW previously reported. In one of those incidents, prosecutors say Peter Eschright, 39, walked up to a 44-year-old Asian American woman and her teenage son on a TriMet bus in Southeast Portland and kicked them both in the shins.

"All Chinese persons have the virus and gave it to us," Eschright reportedly said to the family, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Multnomah County officials said Asian restaurants in the Jade District had experienced a downturn in business due to xenophobic and racist fears surrounding the coronavirus.

Jesus, it's disheartening to hear this is happening in many different Western countries. Going by this thread, I saw the US, Canada, UK, Germany. Also saw Australia and NZ. What's worse is that I'm only hearing about it in this forum. I see no news about this at all.

Yeah. It's sad. I don't know how else to really define it. Don't know what it is. That it's been normalized, especially this past year. That Hollywood and American media don't have prominent Asian-American celebrities. If we're being honest, and no disrespect to Johnny Gat himself, these are mostly side players in movies or TV shows. Don't know if people aren't listening or just don't care. Best thing to do is continue to raise awareness, but yeah, it's sad to feel like your voice is silent.

It's easier to attack Asians and get away with it. They think they won't fight back, won't report it, won't get protected even if they report it. Frankly they gotta get beat the fuck up loudly.

That's so disgusting...

I've been bringing attention to this issue as best I can and boosting Asian-American voices that are talking about these abhorrent acts. Is there anything else I can do? Does anyone know any charities or anything that are fighting this sort of thing or helping those being affected?

This really fucking sucks and I expected it after all the vitriol the orange jackass threw at China.

As one black man voicing his thoughts, doesn't matter what color you are, if you're a racist then you're an asshole, full stop and deserve the whole book thrown at you for whatever stupidity you pull in the name of that prejudice.

Hell, you're especially a dick if you're black or another race that has dealt with decades of this and you're turning around and pulling the same shit on Asians that don't deserve any of it.

Damn, Alhambra? That city is like majority Asian, too.

I mean, who knows why?

I found the article here.

abc7.com

Feces smeared on doors of Asian-owned preschool in Alhambra sparks investigation

An insulting message was scrawled on the walls of a local Asian-owned preschool - the latest hate-filled attack against the Asian American community.

At least the NYT put out an article about anti-Asian hate crimes recently.

www.nytimes.com

A Tense Lunar New Year for the Bay Area After Attacks on Asian-Americans (Published 2021)

The attacks have renewed fears over a wave of anti-Asian violence and harassment that was spurred earlier in the pandemic.

Honestly, this seems incredibly widespread. I knew that it was happening at the beginning of the pandemic, but stupidly I guess I thought it just disappeared.

This is awful. More, I don't know where it's coming from. That is, I thought it was solely pandemic-related, but I realize there's many more issues. How do you snuff this out?

Frankly, I don't know. It's one of the many reasons my family is planning a move...

I might get called out for saying this(and rightly so), but having lived as a minority in three different countries over 30+ years I'm tired and just want to be part of a majority and relax a bit.

Hundreds of people are volunteering to escort elderly Asian Americans to help keep them safe | CNN

Jacob Azevedo's stomach turned as he watched a disturbing video of an 84-year-old Thai American man who was fatally shoved to the ground on a sidewalk in San Francisco.

Something that isn't all doom and gloom.

I mean, it's depressing af that this even needs to be a thing, but at least it's a thing?

That's pretty damn great of them. Like you said it sucks it has to be done, but it's good on those folks that are volunteering.

60 year old Chinese-Filipino man was also assaulted today on Market Street in SF and can't see out of his left eye. I hope the perp gets kneecapped.

I don't care how much progressives like Boudin, he's not doing an adequate job at handling this situation.

Double post, but:

www.nbcnews.com

Texas ramen shop still requiring masks hit with anti-Asian graffiti

Red spray paint on a window at Taiwanese ramen spot Noodle Tree read "Kung Flu" while an outside table was covered in the words "Go back to China."

It isn't the same scale as the murders in Atlanta today, but more like a reminder that this shit is happening everywhere.

My heart breaks hearing about the murders and attacks...It's so disgusting.

This story from my city.

The city has really rallied around Mr. Nguyen:

Once photos of the vandalism spread throughout San Antonio social media, waves of customers poured into Noodle Tree. By 5:30 p.m., the restaurant was sold out of food. The noodle shop is usually open until 8 p.m. on Sundays.

The SO and I are gonna stop by once it's open to normal hours again. Need to show solidarity to let others know that this shit is not welcome here.
