Definitely ready to give this game another shot with the Explore mode. The base mode was just a tad too frustrating and slow for me, but the atmosphere is incredible.

I'm a decent fan of Capybara (Really tempted to get Apple Arcade just for Grindstone) and I want to see them have success, but I couldn't quite get into the OG as much as I tried.

EXPLORE Mode features these changes to BELOW's core rules:
  • Reduced Survival Mechanics: No Hunger or Thirst.
  • Traps, Damage & Death: No instant kills + All damage depletes player Health slowly through bleeding, giving players a chance to recover.
  • Permanent Bonfire Checkpoints: Checkpoints can always be returned to after death, allowing players to continue progressing deeper into the underworld.

BELOW's original SURVIVE Mode exists in its pure, untouched form for player's excited to test their mettle against BELOW's original challenge.

This game was one of those ones that it felt like the press was really rooting for but it kinda came and went. I think there were some undue expectations on it as a flagship indie title for XB1. I think with some time and distance there could be a new appraisal of Below, I hope it does well, always looked good at least.

I completely forgot about this, how was in in the end?

I enjoyed the combat, and even the crafting/hunger stuff, but my progress was halted when I couldn't figure out how to move on from an area. The game was so punishing that I didn't want to risk trying too many crazy things, but I really felt like I exhausted all of my options.

I remember a lot of hype surrounding this game before release, but it was forgotten so quickly afterwards.

This is unexpected! Had it on my Steam wishlist for ages but never got around to it. Maybe I'll grab it for PS4.

Regardless how you feel about the gameplay, the soundtrack in Below is top-form.

i was so bummed out by the scores and discussion it got from critics that i was put off. i just checked the price on steam and it's still ÂŁ20. i might pick it up in a sale. i really really wanted it to be good, i loved the aesthetic.

The aesthetic is the best and probably only standout part of the game.

Sounds like Explore is how it should have been to start with. Will definitely pick it up on PS4; I love the aesthetic and art but it was punishing in all the wrong ways.

hopefully this makes the game feel a little more balanced. there's so much about this game that I love but I could only take so much frustration initially

The art and vibe of this game is great. I got decently far when I was sharing an xbox with my roommates. I might just come back to this.

The intro cutscene in this game is really cool (If you're into really slow, kinda trippy things).

I can't remember which floor I got to but my dead body bugged and I could not recover my resources. It was marked on the map but the body wasn't there, quit the game and never looked back.

Wasn't this the game that was announced in 2013, hyped for like 5 years and then come out and was mediocre

I tried it via Game Pass and played it for a while. It was quite intriguing but couldn't cope with the death mechanic. The gameplay wasn't entertaining enough to make trudging back to where you got before enjoyable in the slightest.

I bought the game at launch to support Capy, but the tepid reception turned me off the idea of actually playing it. I don't think the survival mechanics would've bothered me much, but traps being instant death and checkpoints expiring(?) certainly would have, so I'm all for these changes.

Sounds perfect for switch then

Oh wait
Yeah lol. If there's one game that isn't perfect for Switch, it's definitely this one.

A massive disappointment of a game though. Was so excited when we had the first reveal, only to wait all those years and.. well it turned out to be a massive letdown. Which is a shame, the art, atmosphere etc lived up to the promise, but the gameplay definitely didn't.

This Explore update will make me take a look once the game is 10 bucks or below on Steam. I always really liked the look and atmosphere of this game, but I was completely put off after reading about people's experiences and frustrations. The game just didn't sound fun or respectful of your time, the new mode sounds more compelling to me.

What happened to the video?

Weird, I watched it just a moment ago.

Video probably got published before they had the announcement ready since I don't see mention of it on their Twitter, blog, or anywhere else.

Awesome. I love Capy, I was wondering if we'd ever get this on a system where I can play it.

This game looked incredible on the X but really needed these changes. I tried, but it was too frustrating. I would definitely give it another go when this update arrives.

This I can get behind. Below was a weird game because it wanted you to be smart, explore, look every detail, but then it scared you with survival elements, permadeaths and scarse checkpoints. It felt like the objective and execution were completely opposite in direction, and as a result the game was not fun. I feel that this version of the game might just work out better because the atmosphere is amazing.
