Note: this has nothing to do with "not voting for Biden is voting for Trump" so please don't make the thread about that.

I constantly see discussions in threads devolve to someone making a statement or explaining their logic and someone replies "that's Trump supporter/Trump-ish logic." I'm not even talking about if someone says something racist or something. Just "oh that sounds illogical/stubborn/etc. to me, I'll label you akin to a Trump supporter." Can we not? The between the lines reading of this is "I'm going to compare you to a group of people infamous for racism because I disagree with you." It's an ad hominem that not only seeks to make for inflammatory conversation and arguing, but literally just seeks to pathologically define anything as "I don't agree with it/don't understand it, sounds like a Trump supporter."

Consider that viewpoints and ideas exist out of this sort of frame of thinking, and frankly consider that a lot of these ideas and thinking predate Trump and his supporters... often by decades if not centuries! Find another angle, please. It's so tired.

Can you give some examples?

I'd rather not invite cross thread drama too much but just today I saw a claim that a lot of vocal Bernie supporters are no different from Trump supporters for being stubborn and cult-like. I've been told I may as well be Trump because a poster found me disingenuous and deceptive. I've seen Marvel fans of all things compared to Trump supporters.

I'm just tired. It's a lame dig.

Someone on gaming side compared me to Trump for suggesting that credible leaker sources can be wrong.

I guess they were going for a gotcha moment in trying to show I don't know what I'm talking about, but it came off as beyond stupid and inflammatory for no reason so I just ignored them

Come on with the disclaimer OP, everybody knows better.

On topic, it is dumb. People think there's an argument they can "win" by trying to make other posters feel bad but that kind of appeal is useless online where you don't even know who you're arguing with, let alone respect them.

Maybe, but I do think Trump supporters on here should be more honest too. Maybe that sounds like a contradiction lol.

That Bernie/Trump comparison is completely valid. They're also both populists with horribly off-putting accents. And old, white, refuse to acknowledge institutional racism... the list goes on
The biggest difference is that Bernie has read a book in his life.

Based on a poll of over 220 members, 14% of resetera thinks that I'm a nazi because i said "I know, I know, EGS bad" exactly one time

Also I'm jewish

Also it's okay, 98% of my poll selections are the highest metascore option, the lowest metascore option, and Thor: The Dark World

A real trump supporter would click on etcetera and wouldn't even scroll down half the page before he tabbed out.

I prefer the "my god the replies in this thread are so [whatever] and im ashamed to be apart of this community" post that inevitably appears in every resetera thread regardless of topic.

You didn't mention policy at all - which is by by far the most important part of a politician.

Bernie Sanders has, for most of his life, had far better views on racial and LGBT issues than Joe Biden. Some of his views today are a bit outdated, but that is true for Biden as well.

The best of these are when the debate is heated with no clear consensus and you don't even know what side the poster is talking about.

you want to know why ?

Because some of these talking points that are spread and talked about are the same stuff that MAGA people say.

Why? it's because you don't like a certain person and try to find a different opinion than to what is accepted.

You see this on TYT and big far left people agreeing with Fox News reporters or someone in the far right because they go against the norm.

You probably hear from such people, ( well I never agree with this person but this time, I agree and it just exposes the mainstream media for not telling how it is )

-

If you look up whatever topic that somebody would say this on, you'll find that far right people are the one's that originated it.

( I know because I've been through the reddit/twitter/YouTube rabbit hole and understand that it's how it works)

care to be specific

Also, you should be more interested in the validity of a claim as opposed to whatever you're getting at here.

The biggest difference is that Bernie has read a book in his life.

But politically they are directly opposed and have literally nothing in common, which is the only thing that matters. Accents? Age? What the fuck are you talking about?None of these factors are relevant to anything

I said literally nothing about their policies.
I was agreeing that their supporters are often stubborn and cult-like... which should have been obvious if any of you actually bothered to read what I was responding to.
Thanks for proving my point, I guess?

You agreed about their supporters both being stubborn and cult like and then went on to say Trump and Bernie are similar in other ways so really your post was just confusing.

I said literally nothing about their policies.

You agreed with somebody saying their supporters were the same then explained your agreement by listing a bunch of meaningless details about the two politicians, none of which related to their supporters on any level. In fact, none of which could be relevant to anything important. I did read your post - it didn't make any sense.

My response simply stated that policies is the only important way to compare a politician or their supporters and none of that other shit matters.

Not sure how I proved your point about their supporters despite supporting neither? Or is everyone that disagrees with you automatically a supporter of your least favourite politician?

I have definitely seen what the OP is talking about. If there is a topic about someone says something problematic (e.g. some celeb has some shitty opinion that is also vaguely racist), there is usually a post about how they are a closeted Trump supporter or something similar. It's pretty annoying.
