Free for a whole month starting today. Sweet.
"Blackout will be free later today. I'll update the article when it's live with instructions on how to get access."

Is the game struggling that much against Apex?

Have to wonder how long it will be before they make the battle royale component FTP at this rate.

Supposedly queue times have become pretty long lately. I watched shroud for a bit a little bit after the recent map update and it seemed he was waiting in the lobby for ages. Which was already a problem in the game in solos because it wouldn't start a 30 second match start countdown until 99 players were in the game.

I think these free to play bouts are clear indication that Blackout is set to eventually go free to play so it can co-exist with future COD games and not be buried by being tied to Black ops 4. I honestly think this has always been the plan.

It's a great flavor of BR and the new map looks cool. I encourage everyone to try it.

I do enjoy Blackout, certainly will give the new map a shot. But man if Apex hasn't taken the wind out from under the sails of that game.

The update will bring me back to try, but unless there's a bunch of other improvements there too I doubt it'll keep me.

Damn. I can't see the next COD having BR as the main focus can you?

BO4 sort of banked everything on that mode and whilst it was fun to play, to me BO4 is the least memorable COD because of it.

I really want the next one to feature a campaign again and just focus on what it does best which is fast paced arcade like shooting in tight well made maps, I don't want every single game to be a BR experience.

Truth be told playing all the old maps in regular multiplayer modes has been more fun than the BR mode on BO4 (for me at least.)

It probably should have been F2P to begin with, but I know Activision want to sell their $60 product. Wouldn't be surprised if it becomes fully F2P in the not too distant future. Whether that will be before or after this year's COD, who knows (but I would guess after).

So the major selling point of Blops 4 is now going free to play for a whole month?

I'd be pretty pissed at this point if I paid full price for it at launch.

Soon it will be free forever. You just can't compete otherwise. Why buy this when you can play better ones for free. They all have microtransactions anyway. The only paid BR is PUBG and they can back up the price when they have more content than anybody else.

I think Apex has deflated a lot of its competitors. Blackout for sure and I expect it's done zero favors for Firestorm as well. We're also seeing people like Ninja jumping over to Apex angry at new Fortnite updates that lower the skill gap.

Apex just does so many things right it's hard to counter it. That said, Blackout is different enough to stand on its own in the PUBG/Firestorm flavor of BR.

No numbers but it's the 7th 'most played' game on Xbox (UK) at the moment. Apex is 3rd.

Edit: Black Ops 4 is the 4th most played in the US.

Thanks for sharing :).

So basically, not doing terribly but also probably not where they wanted to be positioned in terms of popularity considering where Apex is.

What's the rest of the top ten look like?

Sure I'll try it if Sekiro loosens its grip on me a little before Dreams EA.

I don't think that's gonna happen tho.

That's exactly what MW4 is going to be. Full campaign and classic mp with no specialists. They confirmed no BR mode but that's likely because Blackout is going free to play and will be its own thing from now on with continued development.

That makes sense and is exactly what I would have wanted.

That way the BR can remain independent and still be worked on as a FTP experience and the main game can focus on what it does best.

Do you know if jet packs will be featured in MW4? (I hope not, boots on the ground is so much better imo.)

  1. Fortnite
  2. FIFA 19
  3. Apex Legends
  4. Rainbow Six Siege
  5. GTAV
  6. Roblox
  7. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  8. Rocket League
  9. Forza Horizon 4
  10. ARK: Survival Evolved

Wonder when (or if) Fortnite will ever lose momentum? Seems to only be gaining in popularity.

Also surprises me that Fifa remains so popular considering how incredibly underwhelming it is these days (although that is subjective of course.)

Rainbow Six is really holding its own though (rightly so because it's an excellent game imo.)

Looking at that though I imagine they must be slightly disappointed blackout isn't doing a little better than it is, maybe this FTP month will give them the boost they require in terms of exposure.

I imagine many who haven't already tried it will try it for the month (because they may be burned out on Apex or Fortnite) but then return to those games after trying out Blackout.

Think they might have an uphill battle even as a FTP title to try and topple those two BR games but I wouldn't say it's impossible.

Just checked the US chart (the one I shared was UK, thus the FIFA domination) and Black Ops 4 is number 4 there. It's ahead of Rainbow Six Siege in the UK for whatever reason.

That's just for PC, which COD never has a lasting community for whatever reason. I heard this was the most-popular COD on PC in years, but that has become a low bar to overcome.
Should just make it free altogether tbh
My prediction is that around the time of the COD 2019 release, they will have a standalone F2P version of Blackout. The smart move would be to give all the people who bought BO4 free battle passes (aka how it is now), but charge for the F2P audience.
I mean it's by far the worst BR out there with or without Apex
Someone hasn't played H1Z1 (or whatever it's called this month), or Realm Royale.
Wonder when (or if) Fortnite will ever lose momentum? Seems to only be gaining in popularity.
If it falls, it's gonna be due to stuff like what is going on now, where you are continuously making large changes to the meta/gameplay and pissing off large parts of your audience. There's plenty of alternate BR options so people don't have to sit there and take it.

No advanced movement. This is back to Modern Warfare's world and is a followup to MW3. (Thank goodness)

As far as twitch popularity goes (which reflects trends to a degree), Apex has also deflated a bit compared to launch. For example, Fortnite has been consistently No1 even after the "casual friendly" update which led to streamers complaining (streamers always complain and always come back to where the money is). I just think that the BR market is reaching saturation and definitely can't support a non-free game. Fortnite has the cool factor, PUBG has the Asian/mobile market and Apex has the middle ground. There is no room for Blackout and there is definitely no room for Firestorm.

Fifa thing makes sense but not sure why Rainbow Six is more popular in the UK, that's hard to explain tbh lol.

I agree with you. Price is a barrier to entry that you just can't get around if you want to be big in the BR space. I think the gas that fuels Blackout comes from the massive console fan base. COD has never been big on PC so it's expected to falter there first.

It's interesting for sure. I'm also curious to see how the COD mobile game does. Best maps from the whole series in one game (first ever time for Infinity Ward and Treyarch maps under one roof) zombies mode as well as Blackout. Can't wait to see how it does in the Chinese and Indian markets.

They should probably make it free permanently. It's a great mode but Apex really ate its lunch, I don't see how it can compete long term without also being free.
I feel similarly about Battlefield V's Firestorm mode. It's fantastic but goddamn it needs to be free.

Unfortunately, mobile is the only platform where Activision can provide Blackout for free. If Blackout was free on consoles, it would definitely severely cannibalise mainline sales, especially when there is no single player component. The mobile market on the other hand, is well isolated from consoles.

As a separate free 2 play download Blackout would make bank, too bad it'll be thrown on the trash heap when the next CoD is released.

With the amount of micro transactions in every single BO4 mode, the entire game should have been F2P

I had a TON of fun with Blackout with my friends, but honestly, Apex came along and ate Blackout's lunch and more.

If your on PC that it the case.

Though on Consoles the queue times are the same as launch. Which is roughly ~10 seconds or so to find a match.

So do I still have to download the entire black ops 4 game to access blackout during this free trial? I remember last time that was the case

Game is great, and I still find games ultra fast on PS4, so can't comment on other platforms but my lord does Treyarch suck ass at balance issues.

This is UK for what it's worth.

There's no guarantees that they're playing the BR mode when you see lists like this. Everyone playing CoD BO4 across all its modes counts in that 7th most players.
